The Fashion Book is designed to be a one-stop textbook and reference for students of fashion and textile studies in the English-speaking world. This inter-disciplinary introduction to theories, debates, methodologies and case studies in fashion studies will suit students in degrees, modules and majors including cultural studies, art, communications/media, cultural geography, anthropology and cultural history.

The Fashion Book is an exciting, readable and comprehensive, all-in-one resource for students of fashion across the English-speaking world. It is designed as an introduction to fashion studies that can be used in a range of fashion courses from fashion studies degrees to fashion modules, and majors in disciplines including cultural studies, cultural sociology, cultural geography, communications and media, anthropology and cultural history. The book will present current writings and research on major topics debates in fashion studies drawing on the literature on fashion theory and incorporating many global case studies (as easy-to-read boxed material). Graphs, tables and diagrams will add texture to the written material. Approximately 200 colour images are planned to generously illustrate the historical and the contemporary tapestry of fashion. A dedicated interactive website will complement the text and ensure that students are in touch with the latest news, issues and trends.

Focusing on social types during the July Monarchy, Pauline de Tholozany argues that the popularity of typologies in France participated in the construction of a national ideal conceived as a sum of individual parts. Tholozany shows that types such as the dandy, flâneur, and grisette abounded in plot-riven literary genres and in journalistic sketches, signaling a fear of obsoleteness that continually evolving printing technologies cast on social thought, thereby inaugurating a new way of thinking about society.

Focusing on social types during the July Monarchy, Pauline de Tholozany argues that they played a role in the construction of a national ideal in France during the period. As Tholozany shows, types such as the dandy, flÃ¢neur (including the child flÃ¢neur), and  grisette abounded, both in plot-driven literary genres and in journalistic sketches. At the same time, in classifying and describing these types, writers such as Jules Janin and Honoré de Balzac in collaboration with graphic artists insisted on the impossibility of establishing a stable social taxonomy. This paradoxical gesture, Tholozany claims, has larger consequences, since the social type’s resistance to a stable classification ultimately points to the difficulty of defining national identity as the sum of its typological parts. Reminding us that character, type, and stereotype are all words borrowed from printing technologies, Tholozany suggests that the types in what Walter Benjamin called panoramic literature signal a fear of obsoleteness that continually evolving printing technologies cast on social thought, a response that inaugurated a new way of thinking about society.

The first monarch to have English as his mother tongue since the Norman conquest, Henry seemed to embody the ideals of chivalric kingship: mercy, piety, military prowess and learning. Nevertheless, he was the first king and founder of a Lancastrian dynasty which would go on to shape England for centuries to come.
