This unique open access collection offers an in-depth understanding of UK-EU police and judicial cooperation post-Brexit, an under-explored field. It considers the legal and political operation of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) and its implications for a wide number of policy areas. As well as critiquing its operation, contributors suggest reforms that would improve police and judicial cooperation between the UK and the EU. This scholarly discussion is balanced against practical considerations, with short chapters setting out practitioners' perspectives on the TCA. It ends by reflecting on lessons that non-EU countries seeking cooperation with the EU might learn. This volume explores in detail the use of the doctrine of good faith in the common law when interpreting contracts and resolving disputes. Building on the findings of Good Faith and Relational Contracts (Hart, 2024) the book discusses the implications of relational contract theory and good faith for issues such as liquidated damages clauses, discretion to terminate a contract, contract forfeiture, employment contracts and contractual remedies. The author discusses the potential for good faith to unite a number of currently disparate contract law and equitable principles into a coherent framework, providing an opportunity to question and jettison some archaic aspects of existing doctrine that are no longer defensible. Ambitious and thoughtful, this is a significant statement on the role of good faith in private law.

Following the events of 9\11 individual countries and the international community became increasingly concerned about how best to prevent the funding of terrorist groups. Alternative remittance systems such as Hawala, where money is moved informally between a network of brokers in the Middle East, north Africa and south Asia have been identified as a potential source of terrorist financing leading to calls for greater regulation of such alternative remittance systems.This book analyses the risk such alternative remittance systems pose in terms of terrorist financing, offering a detailed overview of the historical origins and methods of operation of alternative remittance systems or informal value transfer systems. The factors that have come to ensure that these systems have remained operationally viable in modern times are identified along with the risks they present balanced against an overview of their actual misuse for illicit purposes to date. The book presents a detailed critique of the UK framework for the regulation of these systems drawing where possible on existing data to assess the use and effectiveness of these measures in practice. A range of options for mitigating risks associated with specific remittance corridors is considered ranging from initiatives that promote remittances through the banking sector, to efforts to mitigate risk and the impact on the delivery of UK overseas development aid. The book concludes with key recommendations as to the effectiveness of the current regulatory framework within the UK viewed from the perspective of international efforts to secure the regulation of these systems, and in stemming terrorist finance as part of national and international counter-terrorism policy.

North America is increasingly an integrated economic hub, and Canada and Mexico are important to the U.S. (and vice versa) in terms of energy security, trade, cross-border production, and more. This has made regional security and stability more strategically important than the already high level it had attained through geography. In order to understand North America’s growing strategic significance, we need to take a closer look at U.S. policy within the region. In this book, Paul Ashby examines how U.S. now considers North America, defined regionally as the countries within the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), as a distinct and strategically important economic and security space. Through closer examination of several policy programs with both Canada and Mexico, Ashby demonstrates how the U.S. is actively constructing a regional, North American security architecture based around, but also operating within NAFTA’s perimeters. He contends that increased regional economic integration and important interdependencies spurred by NAFTA are driving, and that these were given far greater impetus by the events and regional impacts of 9/11. In the post-9/11 security environment, the use of genetic data has extended shifted from that of evidence to intelligence. Central to this shift, Erin Kruger argues here, has been a radical reconfiguration of genetic imaging systems. And it is in the context of this shift that she analyses the role of the image in determining the scientific validity - and with it the legitimacy - of genetic data. How, she asks, is genetic imagery attributed meaning? How does it come to be understood as truthful and trustworthy? Kruger draws upon the insights of recent work in Science and Technology Studies to address these questions in the context of various legal and other institutional agendas, technologies, discourses and controversies.
