Die Einführung des freien Kassenwahlrechts Mitte der 1990er-Jahre und die Etablierung des Gesundheitsfonds 2009 hat zu einem Verdrängungswettbewerb geführt, der sich in einer Reduzierung der Anzahl der Krankenkassen manifestiert hat: Knapp 100 Krankenkassen versuchen derzeit die Versorgung für rund 72 Mio.
