The Law of Financial Crime

Following the events of 9\11 individual countries and the international community became increasingly concerned about how best to prevent the funding of terrorist groups. Alternative remittance systems such as Hawala, where money is moved informally between a network of brokers in the Middle East, north Africa and south Asia have been identified as a potential source of terrorist financing leading to calls for greater regulation of such alternative remittance systems.This book analyses the risk such alternative remittance systems pose in terms of terrorist financing, offering a detailed overview of the historical origins and methods of operation of alternative remittance systems or informal value transfer systems. The factors that have come to ensure that these systems have remained operationally viable in modern times are identified along with the risks they present balanced against an overview of their actual misuse for illicit purposes to date. The book presents a detailed critique of the UK framework for the regulation of these systems drawing where possible on existing data to assess the use and effectiveness of these measures in practice. A range of options for mitigating risks associated with specific remittance corridors is considered ranging from initiatives that promote remittances through the banking sector, to efforts to mitigate risk and the impact on the delivery of UK overseas development aid. The book concludes with key recommendations as to the effectiveness of the current regulatory framework within the UK viewed from the perspective of international efforts to secure the regulation of these systems, and in stemming terrorist finance as part of national and international counter-terrorism policy.

IP scholars are not familiar with criminal law, nor are criminal law scholars familiar with IP law; Criminal Enforcement of Intellectual Property in Asia: Sources, Significance, and Side-Effects delves into this no man's land. It identifies and addresses the use (or overuse) of criminal punishment for protecting IP rights, a long-overlooked aspect of IP law that is shaping and distorting the IP landscape in Asia. This is in stark contrast to leading Western jurisdictions, whose criminal punishment of IP infringement, while provided for, is rarely enforced. The overarching theme of this book is to critically review the rationale, legitimacy, and effectiveness of criminalizing IP infringement; assess its significance; expose its consequences; and propose suggestions for reform. The volume is divided into five parts. It starts with criminological discussion of IP crimes, followed by five chapters that study the sources and models of criminal punishment of IP infringement, namely international treaties, the US, UK, Germany, and the EU. In this context, work¿conditional social protection programmes such as Food¿for¿Work (FFW) and Cash¿for¿Work (CFW) aim to stabilise consumption while building community assets. Yet evidence on their comparative effectiveness remains fragmented and sensitive to market conditions, seasonality, and implementation quality.
This thesis assesses FFW and CFW in Zambia, examining targeting accuracy, delivery efficiency, asset quality, and cost¿effectiveness, alongside impacts on food security, diversification, savings, debt, assets, labour allocation, and subjective well¿being. Special attention is given to heterogeneity by market access, timing within agricultural calendars, gender, and shock exposure. A mixed¿methods design combines a three¿wave household panel with qualitative process data. Propensity score matching and inverse probability weighting construct comparable groups, followed by difference¿in¿differences and fixed¿effects models; instrumental variables address potential endogeneity. Standardised indicators including HDDS, FCS, CSI, PMT scores, and Simpson Index guide measurement. 
Results show both modalities reduce negative coping and stabilise consumption. CFW yields greater improvements in dietary diversity and flexibility where markets and payment systems function well. FFW performs better in remote areas, during price spikes, and in lean seasons by guaranteeing staple supplies. Timing is critical: pre¿lean¿season transfers reduce distress sales and improve input access. CFW supports small enterprise entry, savings, and livestock gains; FFW protects schooling, meal frequency, and labour productivity. Both reduce high¿interest borrowing, though via different channels. 
Implementation quality strongly shapes outcomes. FFW faces logistical risks, while CFW is vulnerable to payment delays and inflation. Cost¿effectiveness varies by geography, with CFW cheaper in connected areas and FFW preferable where cash conversion is costly. Gender effects show increased autonomy under CFW and reduced budgeting stress under FFW, moderated by childcare and worksite conditions.
