This book solves this problem by answering the following question: what are the conditions for the development of local innovation?

In order to identify these conditions, the book explores case study cities which are perceived as success cases of local innovation by the respective local community, and sometimes also nationally or internationally. The conditions for local innovations are not sought primarily in economic, social, or institutional circumstances. Instead, this book focuses on the communicative interactions by which local actors develop locally embedded knowledge or a specific social imaginary about those circumstances, as well as the constraints and opportunities deriving from them. The authors focus on a comparative case study of ten cities-Bensheim, Frankfurt, Kassel, Leipzig, and Offenbach in Germany, and Athens, Chania, Elefsina, Kalamata, and Thessaloniki in Greece. The book is based on content analysis of policy documents and local newspapers as well as in-depth interviews with key local actors.

This book explores ideas put forward by the Kyoto School of philosophy in Japan and by continental European philosophers including notably Gabriel Marcel concerning the relationship between globalization and identity. It discusses in particular how philosophers in both East and West have become aware of the propensity of globalization to homogenize culture and identity - of people, places and things - worldwide, how such philosophers show that this neutralization of culture and identity is different from the emptying process aspired to in Buddhist meditation, and how through a process of "concrete self-awakening" people can regain, despite the effects of globalization, an appreciation and understanding of the rich, individual nature of the identity and culture of people and places. Throughout, the book considers a wide range of concepts, thinking and approaches by both Eastern and Western philosophy.

Many people living under sub-standard conditions do not have their rights as urban citizens recognised and realise that they cannot rely on formal democratic channels or governance structures for their demands to be met. How the state interacts with and is perceived by urban slum dwellers will thus be of central importance for future political and economic development. This book studies the relations between slum dwellers and the state in three cities: Delhi, India; Durban, South Africa and Nairobi, Kenya. Analysing these relations both from the perspective of the state and the perspective of slum dwellers, it focuses on three core state functions - security, welfare, and political participation.
