Consumer Durables. What Part of Retail Sales Are They?

An insider's guide to our broken economy and how it fails to serve us.'A fascinating examination of the failures of modern economics, and how these failures are harming us all' Grace Blakeley, author of Vulture Capitalism'Easily one of the most compelling economics communicators of our generation.'Yuan Yang, FT columnist and MP for Earley and WoodleyDid you know that while we think of money as notes issued by the government, the truth is that the overwhelming majority of money today is credit created by private banks?Did you know that the reason housing keeps getting less accessible is because we haven't found a way to separate houses from land in our policies? And did you know that far from globalisation being a mystical force, certain countries and currencies have dominated the way it has played out - to their own advantage?Whilst economics is at the heart of the society we live in, governing so many functions from our taxes to where we live to the price of our shopping, few of us have a strong grasp on the subject. This book is here to help. Why We're Getting Poorer delves into the key topics in economics - money, globalisation, inequality, climate change and growth - showing that what we think we know about these things is wrong, and teaching us what we really need to know. Deciphering the jargon and complexity of economic thinking, with examples ranging from the Simpsons to the German football league to The Inbetweeners, Cahal Moran shows us why our economy set us up to fail, and offers suggestions for how we can make positive changes.Written by an award-winning economist and the YouTuber responsible for 'Unlearning Economics', Why We're Getting Poorer is a thrilling, iconoclastic guide to how the world really works.

A Realist’s Guide to the Economy and How We Can Fix it

Why We’re Getting Poorer

Discussions about interest rates, debt or inflation sound mystifying. Much of what we hear about macroeconomics-from politicians, pundits or even professors-bears little resemblance to how economists think about policy and to people's actual experiences. Macro bridges that gap.In clear and engaging prose, Chicago economist Greg Kaplan demystifies how our everyday behaviour, including how we spend and save, connects to the biggest questions in fiscal policy. Tracing the evolution of modern macroeconomics from Keynes to today, he guides readers through the models often used to explain our economy, uncovering their flaws and revealing what they tell us about managing the economy in good times and bad. The journey culminates in HANK, a macroeconomic model co-created by Kaplan that is more consistent with reality. Macro offers a timely, new framework for understanding and shaping economics in the real world.

Routledge IAFFE Advances in Feminist Economics

Black Women in the U.S. Economy: The Hardest Working Woman explores the impacts of economic, structural, and policy changes since the 1970s on the status and well-being of Black women in the U.S. It examines the rise in income and wealth inequality and subsequent economic downturns for Black women and their families, given the changing relationship between the state, markets, and families over this period of time. The book assembles an interdisciplinary group of scholars who use Black feminist frameworks along with applied microeconomics and econometrics to understand the multiple identities, roles, and experiences of Black women in the U.S. economy. The text is divided into three sections: (1) Black women in the market economy, (2) family and community, and (3) politics, public policy, and its effects. The chapters are designed to stand alone or complement each other, offering a broad overview of Black women's work. The book aims to challenge the popular rhetoric about Black women's work experiences, economic statuses, and roles in providing for and sustaining their families and communities. This important and illuminating study will be essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Black women's experiences within the political economy, as well as all those with an interest in economics, women's studies, Africana studies, sociology, political science, and public policy.

Black Women in the U.S. Economy

This book pulls back the curtain on one of the most powerful yet misunderstood institutions in the modern economy: the central bank. You'll discover how these seemingly opaque organizations shape everything from the interest rate on your mortgage to the price of groceries, the availability of jobs, and the stability of the financial system. Rather than presenting central banking as an abstract academic subject, this guide connects directly to your daily economic experience, explaining why decisions made in guarded boardrooms resonate through every corner of society. You'll journey through the fascinating history of central banking, from its origins in the chaotic monetary systems of past centuries to the sophisticated institutions we see today. Learn how central banks evolved from serving state finances to becoming guardians of currency value, lenders of last resort during panics, and supervisors of the entire financial architecture. The book reveals why central banks were created not through theoretical design but as pragmatic responses to recurring financial crises, bank runs, and the need for reliable government financing. Gain practical insight into the actual mechanics of monetary policy - the tools central banks use to influence the economy. You'll understand how interest rate decisions ripple through financial markets, how open market operations manage liquidity behind the scenes, and when unconventional tools like quantitative easing and forward guidance come into play. The book demystifies complex concepts like the monetary policy transmission mechanism, explaining in clear terms how central bank actions affect borrowing costs, investment decisions, and overall economic activity through channels involving interest rates, asset prices, exchange rates, and credit conditions. Beyond the technical workings, you'll explore the central bank's critical role in preventing and managing financial crises. From the lessons of the Great Depression to the innovations deployed during the Global Financial Crisis, you'll see how central banks function as economic stabilizers during recessions and as lenders of last resort to prevent systemic collapse. The book also examines the evolving challenges facing central banks today - including digital currencies, climate change considerations, economic inequality, and the unique pressures faced by institutions in emerging economies - giving you a forward-looking perspective on how these vital institutions must adapt in a rapidly changing world. Ultimately, you'll finish with a clear understanding of why central bank independence matters, how policy decisions are actually made behind closed doors, and how communication shapes market expectations in ways that directly affect your financial well-being.

The Secretive Power Behind Money, Markets, and Global Stability

Central Banking Uncovered

Since the 1970s, there has only been one playbook for fighting inflation: raise interest rates, thereby creating unemployment and a recession, which will lower prices. This simple story hides a multitude of assumptions about why prices go up and how policymakers can wrestle them back down-assumptions that are often wrong, damaging and have little empirical basis. Prominent economists Mark Blyth and Nicolò Fraccaroli reveal why inflation happens, how we combat it and how it affects our lives. With accessible and engaging commentary and a good dose of humour, Blyth and Fraccaroli bring the complexities of economic policy and inflation indices down to earth. They argue that 2021 marked the end of an era of relative price stability around the world. Now, climate shocks, changing demographics and geopolitical tensions are combining to create a more inflationary future-making a new paradigm for understanding inflation all the more necessary. Astute, timely and thoroughly engaging, Inflation is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the forces shaping our economy.
