The Fleury Playbook has been justly celebrated as the most comprehensive extant collection of medieval music-dramas, containing in a single manuscript examples of non-biblical miracle plays, and settings of the Nativity and Resurrection stories, together with accounts of the conversion of Paul and Mary Magdalene. In this the first full-length monograph on the Playbook, Wyndham Thomas places the collection in its historical, cultural and musical context. Each of the 10 plays is treated to a close dramatic and musical analysis and placed in its broader context of musical life in the twelfth century.

2018 will mark the 800th anniversary of the consecration of the Abbey of St BenoÃ®t-sur-Loire - or Fleury Abbey - the previous home and namesake of the Fleury Playbook, a collection of 10 medieval music-dramas that has long held been a source of fascination, and not a little perplexity, for scholars in a variety of disciplines: history, music history, literary studies, art history in particular. The Fleury Playbook has been justly celebrated as the most comprehensive extant collection of medieval music-dramas, containing in a single manuscript examples of non-biblical miracle plays, and settings of the Nativity and Resurrection stories, together with accounts of the conversion of Paul and Mary Magdalene.  In this the first full-length monograph on the Playbook, Wyndham Thomas places the collection in its historical, cultural and musical context. The first three chapters introduce and then explore the issues raised by the collection: following an introduction, chapter 2 is devoted to the history and traditions of the Abbey, making a persuasive argument for that institution as the original home of the collection, and perhaps the venue in which the plays were first performed. Chapter 3 discusses medieval saints’ cults, placing the dramas, and particularly the four devoted to St Nicholas, in this context. The remaining chapters are devoted to a close musical and dramatic analysis of the 10 plays themselves.

Plautus' Poenulus (or Little Carthaginian) is a staggering work. Performed in the years after Rome's traumatic struggle with Hannibal's Carthage, the comedy stages the restoration of a Carthaginian family divided through enslavement. This book explores the play's many themes such as slavery and war trauma, which resonate especially today, in a series of short thematic chapters followed by a continuous reading of the play. By presenting to a post-war Roman audience a tale of heartbreak and heartache among Carthaginians, and by setting the action in a Greece marked by comedic expectations and the geography of contemporary imperial conquest, Plautus' play stands as perhaps the most powerful surviving meditation on a Mediterranean world changed by Roman expansion. The play is populated by war veterans, enslaved peoples - including sex-workers, domestic slaves, and those who labour in the countryside - and an intersectional cast of Carthaginians and Greeks, a diversity that prompts audience interaction with a wide range of socio-cultural topics relevant to Plautus' Rome. By engaging weighty matters through song, slapstick, puns, and orientalising spectacle, Poenulus appears to defang charged issues, but its bite is deep. The play also includes one of the most metatheatrical prologues of all surviving Roman dramatic works, which thematizes the act of writing comedy and the constitution of the Roman theatrical audience.

This volume brings together the Letter to Markella and the Sentences of the Neoplatonist Porphyrios in a bilingual reader's edition with an introduction and notes, as well as a number of fragments that tie in with the content of both works. The Latin translation of the Sentences by Marsilio Ficino rounds off the selection. Thematically, the texts combine the consideration of the soul from different perspectives: concrete instructions on ethically correct behaviour; theoretical explanations on the nature of the soul; the relationship of the soul to the body and the spiritual realm; discussion of other schools of thought. Although the two main writings belong to different genres, the sententious character of the Letter to Markella also forms a bridge to the Sentences in addition to the thematic connections. The texts offer a compact overview of Neoplatonic principles as well as suggestions on the big questions about our own soul and how we want to live.

Dämonen und Teufel tauchen in der Literatur des Spätmittelalters häufig und in vielerlei Gestalt auf. In den vorliegenden Studien wird dieser Komplex diabolischer Bedrohungen erstmals mit einem Schwerpunkt auf der mittelalterlichen niederdeutschen Literatur systematisch untersucht - und damit zugleich ein Stück der in der Germanistik tendenziell vernachlässigten niederdeutschen Literaturgeschichte geschrieben. Es stehen drei Gattungstraditionen im Mittelpunkt: die Novellistik, die Exempel und die Legenden.
Neben den niederdeutschen Texten wie ,Bruder Rausch', dem ,Verlorenen Sohn', dem ,Großen Seelentrost', der Zeno- und der Brandan-Legende werden dabei auch - im Sinn einer notwendigen Vergleichsfolie - hochdeutsche, mittellateinische, altfranzösische und mittelniederländische Texte einbezogen.
Als Figuren des Diabolischen gelten dabei nicht nur die narrativ konstituierten Protagonisten, sondern vor allem die spezifischen Umgangsweisen mit jenem negativ Numinosen, dessen Bearbeitung literarische Erfahrungen stets überschreitet. Methodisch geht die Arbeit von dem hermeneutischen Grundanliegen aus, jene Fragen zu finden, auf welche die untersuchten Texte die Antworten darstellen und integriert dabei historisch-anthropologische mit diskursanalytischen Ansätzen.
Das Buch richtet sich an Literaturwissenschaftler und Mediävisten aller Fachrichtungen.

Das Geschichtswerk des Historikers Dukas (um 1400 – nach 1462) zählt zu den bedeutenden Werken der byzantinischen Literatur. Seine Schilderungen beginnen mit einem kurzen Abriss der Weltgeschichte. Anschließend behandelt er detaillierter die historischen Ereignisse ab dem Jahr 1341, endet jedoch abrupt im Jahr 1462. Die vorliegende kritische Edition basiert auf dem Kodex Parisinus gr. 1310, geschrieben in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 15. Jahrhunderts. Diskutiert wird, ob dieser codex unicus aus der Hand des Autors selbst stammen könnte. Auch eine italienische Übersetzung desselben Jahrhunderts ist bedeutend für die Überlieferung des Werkes und daher ebenfalls Gegenstand der vorliegenden wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung. Die Prolegomona enthalten Angaben zur Person des Autors, die nur aus dem Werk selbst gewonnen werden können, Hinweise zum Inhalt sowie Erläuterungen zu Sprache und Stil.
