Through an extensive critical review of the major traditions of social theory from the perspective of social realism, this book develops the argument that social theory to date has been hamstrung by its resort to conflationary-reductive analytical modes. Deploying social realism as a tool of explanatory critique of influential sociological theories of contemporary society, such as risk, liquid modernity, reflexive modernity, and postmodernity, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of critical theory, critical realism, philosophy and sociology.

The failure of social philosophers to make sense of an object of knowledge that embodies real divisions and polarities has generated a fundamental problem of social theory: the fallacy of reductive-conflationary analytical and explanatory models in sociological research. This book seeks to define the problem of sociology as one of developing appropriate theoretical and methodological tools for describing and analysing a multi-faceted social reality. Through an extensive critical review of the major traditions of social theory from the perspective of social realism, this book develops the argument that social theory to date has been hamstrung by its resort to conflationary-reductive analytical modes. Part I presents a realist critique of the traditional rivals of holism and individualism while Part II offers a realist critique of the major paradigms of sociological elisionism. In Part III the author builds on these critiques by exploring how the ontology of social realism can sustain a robust social theory that resolves the traditional dilemmas and antinomies. Deploying this social realism as a tool of explanatory critique of influential sociological theories of contemporary society, such as risk, liquid modernity, reflexive modernity, and postmodernity, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of critical theory, critical realism, philosophy and sociology.

Over the past few years an increasing number of museums have experimented with social media to demonstrate that they are listening and engaging in the world outside. While a number of new publications describe the rise of social media as a potential panacea for dwindling audiences, this book is unique in its recognition that participation has not, for the most part, affected the majority of museum practices. Using a number of global examples to describe and map the ways in which social media has been explored within communication programs, authors Russo and Kelly offer a window into the challenges which face future communication strategies and curatorial practices within museums. In this way new essential lessons for museum professionals, museum studies students, and potential collaborators are made accessible.

Participation programs have certainly been introduced to a number of museums and as this book will show, some have been tremendously successful. Yet, for the most part, participation has been limited and the bulk of engagement has tended to be around new forms of publication from within rather than discussions with diverse audiences. Based on research conducted with international museums over the past 6 years, this book explores three key areas: engagement, participation, and co-creation as the keystones for understanding the value of the "social" museum. Using a number of global examples to describe and map the ways in which social media has been explored within communication programs, authors Russo and Kelly offer a window into the challenges which face future communication strategies and curatorial practices within museums. This book develops models for new partnerships, based on critical analysis of both the impact of social media and evaluations of some of the most successful examples in the sector to date. In this way new essential lessons for museum professionals, museum studies students, and potential collaborators are made accessible.

Patipolitics looks at what it means to enjoy the body under technocapitalism, arguing that we need a new paradigm to talk about sexual enjoyment and suffering. It is not just biological life (biopolitics), nor even political death (necropolitics) that has power, but also regimes of enjoyment. In simple terms the paradoxical, ambivalent and traumatic realm of the sexual: a deadly enjoyment that demands satisfaction yet cannot be sated. This is Patipolitics, from the Latin patior- to suffer, which for psychoanalysis is also to enjoy.

The body is governed by a dizzying array of institutions: the family, social media, religion and the culture industries. These sites provide contexts for enjoying the body such as: self-image, object choice, identification, erogenous zones, taboos, codes of sexual morality, inhibitions, violence, and bodily abjection. But it is the ways in which these modalities are harnessed by apparatuses of power which makes them patipolitical.

Patipolitics examines how the body is instrumentalised, weaponised and fantasized through science, technology and capitalism. After highlighting the destructive and oppressive elements of patipolitics, the book elucidates the positive and generative dimensions to the patipolitical. The female body and its place in the masculine imaginary obscures a genuine enigma about the sexual body and power. Ultimately if patipolitics is to be affirmative as opposed to destructive we must ask what alternative future it can help us to imagine?

Climate change-possibly the most pressing and difficult problem facing life on earth today-raises a series of questions that are fundamentally philosophical in nature. Some are: --Is skeptcism about climate change warranted? --Why does scientific consensus about global warming matter? --Who should pay-those who are causing the most damage or those who will bear the greatest burden-to mitigate the effects of climate change? Scientists and policy makers who grapple with these questions need the insights and contexts a philosophical analysis offers. And students and researchers in philosophy need to better know the scientific literature and political issues before offering ethical and philosophical commentary. With formal graduate training in the study of atmospheric science, a Ph.D. in philosophy, and a publication and teaching record that bridges the two areas, Wendy Parker adroitly addresses these and similar questions in, Understanding Climate Change: Science, Philosophy, and Policy.
