This book examines the modernisation of Iran's economy during the overlooked period from 1921 to 1946. By cross-analysing new and understudied primary sources from North America, Europe and West Asia, it argues how, in spite of challenging circumstances during these years, the country saw significant achievements in its banking, industrial, foreign trade, commercial and transportation sectors. The book marks a departure from the state-society paradigm's focus on Reza Shah, instead revealing the coordinated agency of Iranian officials, merchants and others. It asserts that the economic institutions created by these local actors were a clear indication of their nationalist convictions and internationalist outlooks, and that the state policies of this initial phase of Iran's national economy exhibited more rationality, continuity and global awareness than has been previously assumed.

Gesellschaften sind immer schon 'gegendert', also maßgeblich durch Geschlechterordnungen strukturiert. Diese Genderordnungen halten einerseits die Gesellschaft zusammen und bieten Inklusionspotentiale, andererseits gehen Erosions- und Exklusionsprozesse auf sie zurück. Gesellschaftspolitische Bewegungen (Queer-Bewegung, Frauenbewegung, LGBTQI+) machen die damit verbundenen Ungerechtigkeiten - in sehr unterschiedlicher Weise - öffentlich sichtbar. Wenn es der theologischen Sozialethik um Gerechtigkeitsfragen geht, müssen auch die Ungerechtigkeitserfahrungen, die aufgrund von bestimmten Zuordnungen zu oder Vorstellungen von Geschlecht gemacht werden, Gegenstand der ethischen Theoriebildung sein und sozialethisch bearbeitet werden. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes beziehen Gender als konstitutives Element in die sozialethische Reflexion ein und verstehen Dynamiken der sich wandelnden, normativ voraussetzungsreichen Genderordnungen als Bestandteil einer reflexiven sozialen Praxis.

Historically, commerce has existed in Assam in different forms. In the late medieval and early modern times, Assam had trading connections with neighbouring areas of Bhutan, Tibet, Bengal and Myanmar (Burma). This book is about the commercial activities in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in and around Assam. It looks at colonial Assam's economy, its traders, mercantile communities, riverine trade and transportation and bazaars and examines the use of resources by the colonial regime. The book also explores the unique ecology of the region and the role it played in defining Assam's place in the global economy.Rich in archival resources, this book fills a major gap in the historiography of Northeast India and will be indispensable for scholars and researchers of Northeast India, colonial history, economic history, trade and commerce, cultural history, Indian history, South Asian history and history in general.

Commerce, Political Economy and Ecology in Northeast India

This book explores the impact of the bombing of civilians during the Spanish Civil War. The Civil War has long been recognized as bringing together the political, social and other elements key to understanding the 1930s in Europe and later, the Second World War. It was a conflict involving fascism, communism, anarchism and other movements of the day, and led to a dictatorship that kept Spain separate from the rest of Europe until the late 1970s. Recent scholarship on the Civil War has focused on the deaths of 200,000 civilians in the conflict, largely as a result of executions, a number that equals and perhaps surpasses the number of those killed in battle. This effectively recasts the conflict as one that is better thought of as a systematic attack against civilians, rather than as a traditional military conflict. What is missing from this new understanding of the Civil War is an analysis of the impact of bombing. The infamous bombing of civilians in the Basque town of Guernica is widely known but, in reality, the bombardment of civilians was a regular feature of the conflict, including in both Madrid and Barcelona. This book therefore provides a study of the war against civilians from the air, civilian responses to these attacks, and the contemporary memory of this part of the Civil War.

In this monograph, the authors trace the trends, processes and circumstances of the creation of modern vocational schools, specifically of various types of commercial schools.
Lying at the edge of social and business history and history of education, the book leads the reader through Imperial Austria in the years 1848-1918, providing numerous examples of school practice. It explains the social, economic and political circumstances in which the commercial schools were created, and how far this was the initiative of merchants, municipalities, provincial authorities or the state administration. It also describes the opportunities that commercial schools offered to women. The final chapter discusses the impact of the Great War on schools, their pupils and their teachers.
This book will appeal to anyone interested in the history of education and social or business history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Where possible, it draws comparisons with other European countries, opening up reflections on the modernisation of Europe at that time, especially in Germany, Hungary and France.

The Dala Law is known through only one remaining medieval manuscript, written c.1335 - 1353, and shows strong influence from older Swedish provincial law.
