This book aims to describe and explain the whole process of China’s reform and opening-up based on a long-term and global view, trying to reveal the path and philosophy inside. This book is divided into five parts, with 18 chapters, including key topics around economic growth, public policy, social issues and national strategy such as urbanization, migrant works, state-owned enterprise, land reform, political system reform, BRI, which presents an overview of China’s economic history since Reform and Opening-up.

This study examines the driving forces behind the rise of new logistics networks linking China and Eurasia, especially the China-Europe Railway Express. &nbsp;As major transportation infrastructure, these logistics networks have profoundly changed the political-economic landscapes of the “world island.” &nbsp;&nbsp;
By investigating Chongqing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Zhengzhou and Yiwu, the five logistics center cities where the China-Europe Railway Express starts, this study demonstrates the roles played by the China Railway Corporation, local governments, state-owned enterprises and private companies in the operations. These case studies highlight the importance of innovations in bringing down the costs, and how these freight trains have sustained the trade between China and European countries. This book will be of great value to scholars of logistics, China’s belt and road initiative, and globalization. &nbsp;

The China-Europe Railway Express

This book attempts to answer the most fundamental questions of BRI by applying economic methods: What is, what to do, and how to do. Whether in China or the international community, whether in academia or in decision-making circles, there is no consensus on these issues, even though BRI has been around for eight years. As a result, there are many misunderstandings and suspicions about BRI, which have become a major obstacle to its smooth development. As an academic study, this book is not a simple interpretation of the official Chinese BRI representation, but an analysis of it is based on a unified theoretical framework. In addition to tracing the evolution of BRI and the cognition of the international community, the focus of this book is to analyze the attributes, positioning, and governance structure of BRI, as well as to discuss the internal and external risks it faces and its future development direction. The author starts from the development orientation of BRI (different from the current rule orientation of global governance) and makes a normative definition of it. Emphasizing development orientation does not mean that BRI does not need rules, but to jointly formulate rules according to the needs of development. Therefore, one of the directions to promote the high-quality development of BRI is institutionalization.

This book addresses the various challenges that arose during the two periods of Indonesian President Jokowi's administration. These included the global economic crisis, increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics, such as competition between major powers, the Covid-19 pandemic and its ramifications for Indonesia, as well as issues of border disputes, human trafficking, and the situation in Palestine. Addressing these challenges necessitates a forward-thinking Indonesian foreign policy strategy. As the 2024 General Election has taken place and President Jokowi's term came to an end, this book presents a timely and comprehensive discussion on Indonesian foreign policy and diplomacy and its associated challenges—those of the past, and those now facing the current administration. Relevant to Indonesian and international political scientists and social scientists, this interdisciplinary book—which includes perspectives from both scholars and practitioners—confronts Jokowi's policies relating to the economy, territorial, migration, religion, and all aspects of Indonesian society, in the context of the former government.

Chapter One introduces Nepal and defines the scope of the publication. Next, an overview of the macroeconomic sector is provided, suggesting potential developmental trajectories for Nepal. Chapters Two through Seven systematically explore pivotal economic issues, including the nexus of remittances, bank credit to the private sector, trade deficits, governance quality and export performance in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the interaction between the agricultural and manufacturing sectors for economic growth, revenue efficiency, the interrelation of democracy, governance quality, and economic growth, as well as export efficiency from a fiscal policy perspective. The concluding chapter synthesizes the findings and offers policy recommendations derived from the analyses.</div>

It identifies ten key factors behind Korea’s rapid growth from the 1960s to the 1990s and examines pressing socioeconomic issues, including population aging, declining fertility, high suicide rates, political and economic polarization, early retirement, youth unemployment, and the expansion of private education. The book also analyzes deep inequalities within Korea’s labor market, such as persistent gender wage gaps, disparities between large conglomerates and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the divide between regular and non-regular employment, and the heavy reliance on self-employment. This book reveals how the formation of the Chinese socialist system in the 1950s dramatically transformed the nation’s economy, and charts how the newly established economic system functioned during the planned economy period (1949-1978), through focusing on Shanghai, which had served as the center of China’s modern economy since the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing on the rich historical primary sources of the Shanghai Municipal Archives, this study examines the impact of the institutional change wrought by the introduction of the socialist system on Shanghai’s economy, through a careful comparison with the economic structure before 1949. Moreover, it also explores the distinctive features of the Chinese socialist system, first and foremost the relationship between local governments and local businesses that came about through the socialist transformation of private enterprise, by analyzing Shanghai’s fiscal structure and a series of key industries, including the textile, machinery, rubber processing, cement, and power industries. This historical study proffers a new understanding of the long-term economic history of modern China across the pivotal 1949 and 1978 divides and sheds light on the origin of what has come to be known as "socialism with Chinese characteristics" today.
