THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERTHE LONG-AWAITED SEQUEL TO WILD SWANS, THE MULTI-MILLION COPY INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING SENSATIONA Book of the Year in The Times, Daily Telegraph and Financial Times'A must-read ... magnificent'DAILY TELEGRAPH *****'Beautiful and moving'ELIF SHAFAK, OBSERVERJung Chang's Wild Swans was a book that defined a generation, an epic personal history of Jung, her mother and grandmother - 'three daughters of China'. The book opens in 1909 with her grandmother's birth - and foot-binding - when China was under the last emperor, moving through Mao Zedong's rule, especially the Cultural Revolution during which Jung's parents were subjected to horrendous ordeals because of their courage. It finishes in 1978 when Deng Xiaoping officially ended the Mao era and started the 'reforms'. Jung, at that propitious juncture, became one of the first Chinese to leave Communist China for the West.Nearly half a century on, China has risen from a decrepit and isolated state to a global power, the challenger to the United States' dominant position in the world. Through those decades, Jung's life has been intimately entwined with her native land. Her experiences dealing with the regime in those years were rich and revealing - especially so because all her books were (and are) banned.Fly, Wild Swans is the follow-up to Wild Swans and brings the story of Jung's family - along with that of China - up to date. The book is in many ways Jung's love letter to her mother. It is inevitably also about her grandmother and father, both of whom died tragically in the Cultural Revolution but are often recalled in this book. In fact, the past is never far away in Jung's subsequent life. It has shaped her, and moulded the present China, and what's more, it promises to herald the future.China is now at another watershed moment with the era of Chairman Xi Jinping greatly affecting the lives of Jung and her mother. Fly, Wild Swans is Jung's heartfelt response to that experience, and a book filled with drama, love, curiosity and incredible history - both personal and global. Ultimately uplifting, told in Jung's clear, honest and compelling voice, it is memoir writing at its best.'Profoundly revealing as a portrait both of a family and of the deeper traumas that lie at the heart of modern China' RORY STEWART'Another wonder book from Jung Chang...I am quite blown away by it' LADY ANTONIA FRASER

My Mother, Myself and China

Fly, Wild Swans

“Phenomenal…a jaw-dropping book.” —Jon Stewart, The Daily Show Named by The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Prospect magazine as a best book of the year, this “scrupulously reported” (The New Yorker) and “astonishing” (The Daily Telegraph, London) book rivets with its portrayal of how Apple allowed itself to become dependent on China for a huge percentage of its manufacturing, making it vulnerable and unwittingly laying the groundwork for the Asian superpower to rival the US in technological expertise. After struggling to build products on three continents, Apple turned to China’s seemingly endless supply of cheap labor. It soon deployed thousands of engineers, trained millions of workers, and invested hundreds of billions of dollars to create the most advanced global supply chain. These efforts fueled the iPhone’s dominance—but also laid the foundation for a powerful, state-supported Chinese electronics industry. What began as a business decision evolved into a cautionary tale of global trade, tech rivalry, and national security. Without intending to, Apple helped Beijing acquire technological influence that could now be weaponized—a central concern in the ongoing US-China tech war. Drawing on over two hundred interviews, Patrick McGee exposes never-before-reported details from Silicon Valley to Shenzhen: internal emails, secretive executive meetings, and overlooked voices inside the company’s China operations. You’ll meet the “Gang of Eight” executives tasked with appeasing Beijing, a Mormon missionary who launched Apple retail in China, and a veteran whose dreams of improving factory conditions were crushed by both Apple’s demands and Xi Jinping’s authoritarian crackdown. From Foxconn and Tim Cook to the Chinese Communist Party and Taiwan Semiconductor, this is a revelatory look at how Apple, in seeking efficiency, became entangled in the very politics it once claimed to challenge. For readers of Chip War, American Factory, and The Big Short, Apple in China is a searing examination of corporate power, Chinese nationalism, deglobalization, and the fragile relationship between Silicon Valley and the world’s rising superpower.

New Perspectives on Chinese Politics and Society

This book develops a conceptual and analytical framework for understanding persistent regional divergence in innovation performance. Instead of treating inequality as a measurable outcome, this book introduces the concept of structural asymmetry as an underlying mechanism embedded in knowledge capacity, institutional coordination, and opportunity structures. This book seeks to move beyond descriptive cluster studies and fragmented empirical cases by offering a transferable theoretical architecture that can be applied across national contexts. This book also examines how contemporary global transitions—such as digitalization, demographic change, and climate transformation—interact with pre-existing regional structures. By linking long-term divergence with institutional governance and emerging technological shifts, this book aims to provide both theoretical depth and policy relevance for scholars, graduate students, and practitioners concerned with regional innovation and structural transformation.Chen Qi
is an associate professor at Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance. Her research focuses on regional innovation systems, industrial economics, and structural transformation. She has published widely on China’s regional innovation patterns, governance structures, and industrial upgrading trajectories. In this book, she developed the core theoretical framework and analytical architecture and led the conceptual design and integration of the structural asymmetry approach based on qualitative materials, including policy documents, secondary data, and expert interviews.

Governing China in the 21st Century

‘China’s Urban–Rural Relations: Myths, Lessons, and Legacy of the New-Type Urbanisation Plan’ offers a critical and timely examination of one of the most ambitious transformation agendas of the 21st century. The book examines how China's New-Type Urbanisation Plan has changed the connection between cities and the countryside—spatially, economically, institutionally, and socially—moving beyond celebratory narratives and crude criticisms. This book fundamentally questions the notion that urbanisation is a neutral or consistently advantageous development. It contends that although China's approach has brought about previously unheard-of levels of scale, speed, and connection, it has also resulted in uneven outcomes, enduring inequality, and contentious forms of integration. As described above, urban-rural change is a complicated and frequently conflicting process influenced by distributional dynamics, institutional frameworks, and governance decisions rather than a straight line toward equilibrium. Architects, planners and scholars will find it of interest.Ali Cheshmehzangi
is Professor and Head of the School of Architecture, Design and Planning at The University of Queensland, Australia. His research focuses on urban sustainability, climate resilience, and the evolving relationships between cities, communities, and technological systems. He has authored and edited more than 70 academic books and published extensively on sustainable urbanism, urban transformation, and the future of cities. His work on China draws on extensive research and academic experience, critically examining the country’s rapid urbanisation, urban–rural transformation, and governance practices within wider debates on sustainable development, carbon neutrality, and long-term urban and regional change.

China’s Urban-Rural Relations

This book tackles Jakarta’s pressing environmental and governance challenges, with their wider implications for Indonesia. Underpinned by deep scientific analysis, it highlights the need for integrated planning and ecosystem protection to avert disasters. It critiques the current urban development focus on economic growth, which often overlooks the need for sustainability and inclusiveness. By promoting good governance, this book emphasizes the crucial role of preserving both land and marine ecosystems in urban planning to protect Jakarta from environmental and disaster risks. The uniqueness of this book stems from its sharp critique of current development models that neglect environmental and social sustainability, leading to social exclusion and marginalization. It is organized into four main sections, each dissecting different facets of governance and ecological tactics vital for sustaining Jakarta. Aimed at students, academics, policymakers, and business leaders dealing with Jakarta's intricate challenges, this book introduces fresh methodologies and viewpoints. It brings together a range of experts to discuss historical contexts, practical realities, and strategic visions. As a thorough guide for re-envisioning Jakarta’s development strategies, it encourages a vital discussion on reshaping urban growth to prevent the city from sinking while promoting a more inclusive and sustainable urban future.

Genders and Sexualities in the Social Sciences

This edited volume is a decolonial/deconstructive approach to South Asian gender and sexuality studies, which it reimagines through a pluralized, multivariate lens. New understandings of South Asia have emerged during the time of unrest and shifting geopolitics. It is critical to re-envision gender engagements in ways that decenter universalizing hegemonic feminist debates, both from global and national metropole and instead rearticulate gender and sexuality through critical regionalism, border-politics, land and social movements, indigeneity, law and jurisprudence and broader social textuality. Building bridges across disciplines and between scholars and activists, the chapters in the book offer perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, public health, international relations and law, as well as organizers and advocates committed to women and gender studies.

Local and Urban Governance

Depopulation, aging, and population migration—nationwide phenomena—are having a significant impact on local governance in Japan's rural and mountainous villages. Japan leads the world in these demographic trends, offering critical lessons for other aging societies. This book focuses on Ōtoyo Town in Kōchi Prefecture, a municipality at the forefront of these challenges. Researchers from the fields of political and administrative science, agricultural economics, and rural sociology have joined forces to tackle this issue, presenting the results of their collaborative study.

The New York Times bestseller, Financial Times and Sunday Times Book of the Year Shortlisted for the Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the YearThe book we need to understand China today: a riveting, first-hand account of its seismic progress from an indispensable expert voice For close to a decade, Dan Wang has been observing China's tumultuous and astounding growth. The state has constructed towering bridges, gleaming railways and sprawling factories to improve economic outcomes in record time. But rapid change has also sent ripples of pain throughout society.China has grown so quickly in part by beating America at its own game: capitalism and harnessing the restless energy of a vast population. Here Wang blends political and economic analysis with reportage into a provocative new framework for understanding China - one that helps us see America more clearly, too. Whereas China is an engineering state, relentlessly building big, the United States has transformed into a lawyerly society, stalling every attempt to make change, both good and bad.As relations between the US and China are tense and uncertain and the potential for dreadful conflict looms, Wang offers an inventive new way of thinking about the two superpowers. Breakneck reveals that each country points towards a better path for the other. How much better the world would be, he argues, if Americans could live in a society not only governed by lawyers, and Chinese citizens could live with a state that values their individual liberties.'An illuminating account of China's dizzying rise and its deepening pathologies' Chris Miller 'One of the best books published on China this year' The Times

This book investigates the policy choices and institutional frameworks that powered South Korea’s remarkable transformation from postwar poverty to a global economic powerhouse, while confronting the mounting structural challenges that now threaten its sustainability. It identifies ten key factors behind Korea’s rapid growth from the 1960s to the 1990s and examines pressing socioeconomic issues, including population aging, declining fertility, high suicide rates, political and economic polarization, early retirement, youth unemployment, and the expansion of private education. The book also analyzes deep inequalities within Korea’s labor market, such as persistent gender wage gaps, disparities between large conglomerates and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the divide between regular and non-regular employment, and the heavy reliance on self-employment. Finally, it addresses critical economic policy challenges, including rising household debt, real estate bubbles, minimum wage debates, inflation, an underdeveloped service sector, an undervalued stock market, inefficiencies in public enterprises and mutual financial cooperatives, a lagging tourism industry, the search for new growth engines, carbon neutrality commitments, and an outdated tax system. Offering fresh insights and concrete policy recommendations, the book highlights both the achievements and the vulnerabilities of Korea’s economic model.Se-Young Bae
is Professor Emeritus of Finance at Konyang University in Nonsan, South Korea, and earned his B.A. from the George Washington University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. South Korea’s Dilemma: Prosperity, Inequality, and the Road Ahead

"Take a fascinating journey with Pobsook Chamchong to learn what it takes for a hierarchical nation to produce policy innovation. Her counterintuitive insight is that innovating in such a context depends on cultivating a deep commitment to co-creation."
--Christopher Ansell, Professor, University of California, Berkeley.
“This book is a must read for anybody interested in how to stimulate co-creation of innovative solutions to societal problems in societies that are hierarchical both in terms of formal power distribution and cultural norms. Based on theoretical reflection and empirical inquiry, Pobsook emphasizes the crucial role that innovation cultivators play in building an ecosystem that supports and promotes cocreated innovation. An important contribution to the existing research is that she brings to light the importance of not only promoting horizontal network connections between local actors but also vertical networks between actors at different levels in organizational and communal hierarchies.”
--Eva Sørensen, Professor, Roskilde School of Governance, Roskilde University, Denmark.
This book examines policy innovation in highly hierarchical societies, particularly in Asia. Drawing on an insightful case study from Thailand, it assesses how policy innovations come to be cultivated at the sub-national level of a centralised government. In particular, the book assesses the role of policy innovation cultivators in the policymaking process, including the constraints placed upon them and the tactics they employ to overcome them. Whilst this topic has received much attention from scholars in democratic societies, far less studies have examined the role of policy innovation cultivators in Asia and the Global South, where countries are often governed by hierarchical, semi-autocratic governments. The book therefore offers important insights into how the role of these cultivators differs in different parts of the world, depending on the political context, administrative system, and socio-cultural setting in which they operate. It also highlights the need for culturally sensitive approaches to studying policy innovation, tracing a journey through generative policy ecosystems. It will appeal to all those interested in public policy, public administration and governance, as well as politics in Asia and the Global South.
Pobsook Chamchong is Assistant Professor in the School of Public Policy, Chiang Mai University, Thailand.
