Governing China in the 21st Century

Since 2015, China has actively promoted “third-party market cooperation” as a new model of international economic engagement. This approach brings together China, advanced economies, and beneficiary countries to jointly develop infrastructure and construction projects, moving beyond traditional bilateral cooperation framework. Official narratives portray tripartite cooperation as a “triple-win” arrangement that combines China’s manufacturing capacity, partner countries’ advanced technologies, and the development needs of beneficiary countries. While such cooperation promises risk-sharing, resource complementarity, and enhanced project quality, it also introduces new challenges, including higher transaction costs, divergent governance practices, and complex negotiations among multiple actors.
Addressing the central question of why stakeholders choose tripartite cooperation and how three-party collaboration shapes project outcomes, the book makes both theoretical and practical contributions. It integrates transaction cost theory, international relations theory, foreign direct investment theory, and infrastructure natural monopoly theory to advance a novel concept of “semi-internalisation.” The analysis provides policymakers, practitioners, and scholars with a framework to understand partner selection, interest alignment, and the evolving dynamics of one of China’s significant yet understudied innovations in global economic cooperation

<div>This Palgrave Pivot concentrates on the development economics of Nepal, an LDC graduating landlocked country, from a macroeconomic perspective across eight chapters. Six of these chapters are interconnected contextually and serve as comprehensive research articles employing various quantitative techniques. Chapter One introduces Nepal and defines the scope of the publication. Next, an overview of the macroeconomic sector is provided, suggesting potential developmental trajectories for Nepal. Chapters Two through Seven systematically explore pivotal economic issues, including the nexus of remittances, bank credit to the private sector, trade deficits, governance quality and export performance in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the interaction between the agricultural and manufacturing sectors for economic growth, revenue efficiency, the interrelation of democracy, governance quality, and economic growth, as well as export efficiency from a fiscal policy perspective. The concluding chapter synthesizes the findings and offers policy recommendations derived from the analyses.</div>

This Handbook is a charting exercise to determine contemporary patterns of Indian migration to Southeast Asia. It will determine two waves/sectors of the Indian migration process to Southeast Asia, high skilled migration and semi-skilled to low skilled migration. However, such a research project is not complete without understanding the context of social and political dilemmas of Indian communities in Southeast Asia as well as the interstitial spaces some Indian migrants or migrant communities might fall through as stateless Indians or Indian communities. The Handbook is premised largely on Indian-ASEAN, twenty-five years of partnering relations in diplomacy, politics, economy, people to people exchange, human capital development and exchange as well as coordinated infrastructural development. It&nbsp;reinforces the much-discussed ‘Look East’ and current ‘Act East’ initiatives of the Indian government, highlighting cooperation with the Southeast Asian and East Asian economies, as some political perspectives suggest, to counterbalance China’s economic influence in the region.S. Irudaya Rajan is Chair of the International Institute of Migration and Development, Kerala, India. Prior to this, he was a Professor at the Centre for Development Studies. Prof. Rajan is the Founder Editor in Chief of Migration and Development (Sage) and the editor of two Routledge series - India Migration Report and South Asia Migration Report. He has coordinated nine large-scale migration surveys in Kerala since 1998 (with K.C. Zachariah) and replicated the Kerala model of migration surveys in other states, including Goa (2008), Punjab (2009), Tamil Nadu (2015), and Odisha (2023) and has been instrumental in similar surveys in Gujarat (2011), and Jharkhand (2023).

This book explores the roles of land and housing in the China economic development. The real estate sector in China has two opposite effects on the urban economy. On one hand, it provides funds for urban development and on the other hand, its excessive expansion would depress the urban growth. To balance the two effects, the governments try to adjust their regulation policies dynamically. These policies to a great extent determine the rise and fall of urban economy. This book is divided in to four parts. The first part elaborates the relationship between the real estate sector and urban economy and explains the mechanism of the former’s impact on the later. The second part investigates the interaction of the real estate sector and the industrial sector and the consequences. The third part discusses the real estate tax reform and the affordable housing system. At the last part, I discuss the prospect of China real estate economy through the case of Evergrand’s debt crisis.  ist Professor für Volkswirtschaftslehre und Co-Vorsitzender des Sino-German Centre an der Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. Er hat viele Jahre in China gelebt und gearbeitet und war Vize-Präsident des Shanghai International Banking and Finance Institute (SIBFI) und Professor an der China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai.
 Tim Jablonski 
 war wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Sino-German Centre an der Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. Er hat einen M.A. in „China Language and Economy“ von der Universität Würzburg und hat anschließend mehrere Jahre in China gelebt und gearbeitet. Over the past few decades, the central government has moved to decentralize a traditionally school-based skill development system, embracing a more market-oriented model that incorporates substantial employer involvement. This shift has produced a highly decentralized system centered on targeted training partnerships between schools and firms. These collaborations, further institutionalized by a series of reforms associated with the Made in China 2025 initiative, have helped alleviate skilled labor shortages and sustain the competitiveness of China’s industrial sector globally. Yet, this book argues that neither a centralized, school-led model nor a decentralized, employer-driven approach has established the ideal institutional foundations necessary for sustainable workforce upskilling. This provocative study explores the future of skills development in China and identifies critical reforms needed to build a labor force capable of sustaining the country’s economic trajectory in the decades ahead.
