This book examines the development of the Russian oil and gas industry over recent decades, showing how, in a series of in-depth case studies of previous international company involvement, international companies should in future cope with the business environment, how they should acquire local knowledge, deal with the state, and forge partnerships with domestic companies, but only to a limited extent.

Russia is the world’s largest producer of both oil and gas, with very significant reserves. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union the exploitation of oil and gas has taken place mainly in existing "Soviet legacy" fields, where established, relatively simple technologies were sufficient. This enabled the Russian state and local Russian entrepreneurs to be major players in the oil and gas industry, making use of international oil and gas companies and their expertise, but not wholly reliant on international companies. As the position is now changing, with "Soviet legacy" fields coming to the end of their lives, and with a growing need for more difficult fields to be exploited, requiring more advanced technology, the role of international companies is likely to be greater in future. Nicht erst seit der Transformation der politischen Systeme in Osteuropa wird dem schon in den 1950er Jahren entwickeltem Ansatz der politischen Kulturforschung wieder größere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Seine zentrale Frage richtet sich auf die Herstellung und Bedingungen der Stabilität eines politischen Systems. Neuere Betrachtungen implizieren die Integration der politischen Kulturforschung in die Überlegungen der vergleichenden empirischen Demokratieforschung als eine grundsätzlich Staaten und Regionen vergleichende Form der Analyse. Sie besitzt somit eine methodische, aber auch inhaltliche Breite wie kaum ein anderer politikwissenschaftlicher Forschungsansatz. Die Zielstellung der Vorgehensweise politischer Kulturforschung bezieht sich vor allem auf die subjektiven Einstellungen der Bevölkerung, welche der Grundpfeiler für die zukünftige Konsolidierung, Akzeptanz und Aufrechterhaltung der existierenden Staatsformen, aber auch der Demokratie als Konzept an sich sind. Das vorliegende Buch schafft durch die Integration der theoretischen Grundprämissen des Ansatzes der politischen Kulturforschung, der Darstellung seiner Einbindung in die international vergleichende Demokratieforschung, dem Aufzeigen seines methodischen Vorgehens und der Explikation der wichtigsten internationalen Vergleichsergebnisse eine breit gefächerte Diskussionsgrundlage für Forschung und Lehre.¿

Husein Ðozo (1912-1982), was a prominent Bosnian scholar and mufti who lived and worked in communist Yugoslavia. Ðozo responded to the challenges he and his people were faced with, above all the so-called 'Yugoslav Communism' and modernity. Through the prism of Ðozo's spirit and thought, the ideas of the so-called 'modernist' and 'reformist' interpretations of Islam gained a dimension in Eastern Europe. Contextualising Ðozo's work and ideas in relation to both modern and to a lesser extent classical Islamic scholarship, this book is the first indepth study of the thought and writings of any contemporary Bosnian Muslim scholar in English.

In many European states, multiculturalism has recently come under attack, being openly questioned by many in both the public and political spaces as being in 'crisis'. Prompting many of these attacks have been incidents or events - typically interpreted as 'controversies' - that have involved or centred on issues relating to Muslims or Islam. Having ramifications in the social, cultural or political spaces, many have seen these controversies as accentuating the 'problem' of Muslims and Islam. Focusing on a number of these 'crises' and 'controversies', this book seeks to to interrogate the theories of Islamophobia through the lens of a series of different 'crises and controversies' that have involved - or have been perceived as involving - Muslims or Islam. This book critically engages these 'crises and controversies' through the framework of the definitions, theories and concepts explored in the author's earlier book Islamophobia? (Ashgate, 2010). Allen's latest boo sets out to: better understand where, how and why the responses of both the right, left and centre of the European political spectrum are seemingly converging in views and attitudes towards Muslims and Islam; contribute additional knowledge to the still relatively under-researched yet extremely timely phenomenon of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred; and consider how this links to and affects attitudes and expressions manifested in the public and social spaces. Employing a largely thematic approach, this book focuses on the linked impacts of a range of different controversies that have occurred at the local, national and regional levels. This book explores central issues of religion in an age of globalization, questioning how religion speaks to us in contemporary society, and how representations of religion impact in popular culture. Focusing on Japanese popular culture, MacWilliams examines Japanese comic books in particular: Japanese manga or 'comic books' often explicitly deal with religion, and commercially published manga account for over 40% of total number of books and magazines published in Japan. The magic of manga lies in their potential "to dramatise and exaggerate information and simplify a complex reality", and just like the religious iconography of an earlier age, modern manga offer a powerful visual theology of sacred reality for their audience. What 'imagined selves and worlds' do manga construct? What are some of the important visual theologies that they can convey? These are some of the questions explored in this book. Historians of religion have largely ignored popular culture as a medium of religious experience and expression; yet by neglecting popular genres, such as Japanese manga, they ignore one of the principal ways people day wrestle with contemporary moral and spiritual issues. This book redresses this neglected area, raising profound religious and moral issues that are immediately relevant for those exploring Japanese religion, media and cultural studies, and anyone trying to imagine the sacred today.
