Elephant Conservation and Society in India

Despite the growing population and significant natural resources of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), economies in that region currently represent only 2% of global GDP. Finished goods are imported to Africa from the US, Europe, China and Japan, while commodities remain the primary export. Addressing this balance must be the primary focus of initiatives to foster economic growth and development across the region in the coming years. However, there is currently a lack of intellectual discourse that incorporates diverse firm-level and institutional-level theories, as well as the stakeholder perspective, to explain the transformation of Sub-Saharan Africa into a production economy. This two-volume edited work brings together scholars of business in Africa and economic transformation to discuss topics including the knowledge economy, inter-regional relations, supply chains, the informal economy, the service sector and more, creating a broad and probing analysis of Africa’s potential for transformation and strategies to achieve it.This first volume explores a multidisciplinary perspective on the transformation of SSA’s economies to production and export orientation, which entail: facilitating SSA’s economic transformation through regional relations; the role of SSA’s informal sector on regional relations and economic transformation; and the recommendations for economic transforming in SSA. He has received several local and international awards for his scholarship. He is the Chair of the International Centre for Policy Research and Industry Linkages (ICePRIL).
 Evans S. Osabuohien
 is a Professor of Economics at Covenant University, Nigeria, and the Founding Chair of DePECOS Institutions and Development Research Centre (DIaDeRC). He is the author of five books and over 210 articles. He has consulted for many international agencies such as ACBF, AERC, CODESRIA, IFPRI, J-PAL, UNU-WIDER, UNCTAD, among others. He is a member of many Professional Associations. He is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (since 2012) and the Swedish Institute (since 2009), among many others. He is also a visiting professor at institutions within and outside Africa.

This book systematically examines how the digitalization of global value chains (GVCs) has driven the high-quality development of China's manufacturing industry. It reveals the intrinsic mechanisms and pathways through which digital technologies reshape the international division of labor and promote industrial upgrading.Integrating theory with empirical analysis, the book establishes an innovative measurement framework for GVC digitalization. Using data from China's manufacturing sectors from 2000 to 2020, the book evaluates the quality of industrial development across five dimensions: innovation, coordination, green development, openness, and sharing. Since colonial times, the developing world has served as a ‘resource hinterland’ for the global capitalist system. In recent years, this relationship has again returned to centre stage. Across the globe, a broad range of natural resources are being drawn into market-led modes of environmental governance. Pressures on natural resources in the developing world have become especially acute as escalating mineral and energy demands from the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), and the continuing US quest for non-Islamic oil and strategic minerals have made Third World resources increasingly significant in global markets. Such a geopolitical shift in global resource interests would suggest that there is an urgent need to reconsider the impacts of ‘neo-colonial’ transnational practices in the context of natural resource-extraction industries. As local issues become linked to global political and economic forces, a ‘second scramble’ for natural resources in Africa, Asia and Latin America, initiated by powerful transnational corporations (TNCs) and other actors, threatens to undermine country policies for sustainable resource extraction, and sustainable development more broadly.This timely text will introduce readers to the key issues surrounding reform and expansion of the extractive industries in developing countries, highlighting the consequences of recent developments in the sector to development in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The new macroeconomics is about distributions and flows, rather than points and intersections. Market frictions imply that the search for trading partners is time consuming and costly. Consequently, market participants flow between economic states, and trades occur at dispersed prices. This generates motives for continued search for better market opportunities, and for bargaining between potential trading partners. This volume takes the empirical analysis of markets with frictions to a new level by using unique merged registers from Denmark on firm accounting data, individual employee data, and international trade data to estimate empirically the relevant flow rates, dispersions, and relations among key variables of interest, including productivity, firm size, wages, exports, growth, and unemployment. The results serve to inform researchers and policy makers about the functioning of markets, justify the interpretation of dispersion and flows as equilibrium outcomes, and provide an understanding of cycles, adjustment, and potentials for public policy.
