How artists of interwar Paris created an "art of living," treating their daily lives as an aesthetic, ethical, and creative practice. With The Art of Living in Avant-Garde Paris, Rachel Silveri takes a fresh look at the desire to unify art and life, an ambition long regarded as foundational to the European historical avant-gardes. She reveals how many early twentieth-century artists saw their own everyday lives--their bodies, identities, and relationships--as a type of creative material and a central component to their avant-garde practice. These artists abandoned traditional forms of artmaking and venues of art viewing, instead aspiring to integrate art with everyday life, creating an "art of living." Considering Tristan Tzara's performances of Dadaist identity, Sonia Delaunay's simultaneous fashions and self-branding, and the collective endeavor to open and operate the Surrealist Research Bureau, Silveri offers a new narrative about how the artists of interwar Paris developed experiential life practices that resisted dominant forms of "lifestyle" and normative discourses surrounding gender, ethnicity, and office work. This book argues that ethical questions of "How should I live?" and "How should I relate to others?" were as important to the avant-garde as politics, and that aspirations to change the world played out in daily practices of self-making.

This innovative study introduces the concept of xiangchou - homesickness and rural nostalgia - to English-language scholarship, using it as a lens through which to explore rural development in contemporary China. Using hometown ethnography, Linda Qian takes a village in Zhejiang province as her primary case study to demonstrate the emotional, social, and political forces shaping rural return migration and development policies. Through personal narratives and state-led initiatives, she reveals how xiangchou functions as both a 'structure of feeling' and a tool of affective governance. By intertwining lived experiences with broader social and political contexts, this study highlights the overlapping desires projected onto the countryside and underscores the significance of the 'rural' in the traditional concept of the 'hometown.'

What can it reveal about the discontinuities-and uncomfortable parallels-between the periods of political and economic turmoil that characterize modern German history? The rapid modernization of the German Empire in 1871 led to large-scale transformations in the cultural, social, and political spheres. Exploring a rich diversity of erotic visual art-from paintings and photographs, to postcard and graphic folios-this volume reveals the impact of these changes on the erotic interests of the nation. Exploring various forms of artistic production, reception, and circulation, Erotic Art in Modern Germany argues for the cultural value of erotica in modern Germany. It presents work by both highly regarded and lesser-known artists and explores themes such as legal cultures and the impact of censorship, sexuality and sexual reform, and changing political frameworks, from imperialism to fascism. 10 chapters explore diverse topics, from philological and ethnographic approaches to erotic art, to scientific developments, gender and sexuality. With its holistic, cross-disciplinary approach-drawing from the fields of anthropology, film theory, Marxism, feminism, and trans- and queer theories-the book complicates simplistic understandings of 'modern' erotica and powerfully underlines its enduring significance as a site of dissent and experimentation.

In collaboration with the estate of Bill Traylor, this publication offers a comprehensive look at the self-taught artist’s distinctive imagery, which mixes subjects and iconography from the American South with a strong formalistic treatment of color, shape, and surface.Born into slavery, Traylor spent much of his life after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation working as a farm laborer in rural Alabama and, later, as a shoemaker and factory worker in Montgomery. In 1939, at approximately the age of 85, having never previously trained or studied art in any formal way, Traylor began making drawings and works on paper using gouache and other media. Though he continued to make art for the remainder of his life, Traylor was most prolific between 1939 and 1942, creating a body of work that offers a unique and rich registry of his life, experience, and insights.This monograph weaves beautiful reproductions of Traylor’s works with essays by and conversations with his descendants, offering a unique and deeply personal look at this artist whose work exists in the collections of many notable institutions in the United States but whose story has never been fully told.

How contemporary artist Glenn Ligon’s expansive body of work mines American history and literature to ask critical questions about modern culture. OCTOBER Files: Glenn Ligon (b. 1960) presents the first compilation of critical discourse on the multimedia work of one of the most influential American artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Often citing or annotating past literary (e.g., James Baldwin), artistic (e.g., Andy Warhol), and musical (e.g., Steve Reich) interventions, Ligon’s practice imaginatively explores the contradictions of speech, vision, authorship, identity, blackness and belonging in works that are at once historically resonant and materially sensuous. Spanning Ligon’s emergence in the postmodern multicultural milieu of New York in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, his starring turns at Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and other international exhibitions of the 2000–10s, and his formative impact on both new and canonical art histories, this volume provides a comprehensive accounting of the questions central to his work in painting, sculpture, video, installation, and print. With texts by writers from Wayne Koestenbaum to Rizvana Bradley, this File not only plumbs the depths of Ligon’s oeuvre, but also models the various approaches to critical writing that have defined art and culture of the past 30 years.
