Callimachus: The Epigrams

Edited with Introduction, Translation, and Commentary

Monstrum in Fabula offers a wide-ranging exploration of how ancient societies imagined, defined, and used monsters. Bringing together essays on ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Hebrew Bible, and the Greek and Roman worlds, the volume reveals both the cultural specificity and the cross-cultural resonance of monstrous beings.
Drawing on diverse analytical approaches-including recent developments in Monster Theory-the contributors examine how monsters embody fears, negotiate boundaries, and express social, moral, and cosmological concerns. Through close readings of texts, images, and myths, the volume highlights the narrative, symbolic, social, and psychological functions of monstrosity across different ancient traditions.
This collection invites readers to reconsider the role of the monstrous as a vital lens for understanding how ancient peoples made sense of the unknown, the dangerous, and the extraordinary, while constructing their own social reality.

Monsters and Monstrosities in Ancient Contexts

Monstrum in Fabula

While Menander has long stood as the emblematic figure of Greek New Comedy, recent scholarship has increasingly challenged this Menandrocentric view by re-examining the broader landscape of comic production in the late-Classic and Hellenistic period. This volume brings to the fore the fragmentary remains of Menander's contemporaries-such as Philemon, Diphilus, Apollodorus and others-offering new insights into their character typologies, linguistic style, and political engagement. Through philological, literary, and reception-oriented approaches, the contributions in this book reevaluate long-standing assumptions about the genre. The volume not only recontextualizes New Comedy within its historical and literary frameworks but also sheds light on its impact on Roman comedy. By expanding the canon beyond Menander, this study provides classicists, philologists, and literary historians with a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the genre's complexity and cultural significance.

Arthurian research, which created a forum for itself with the founding of the International Arthurian Society in 1948, serves to explore the common cultural foundations of Europe. With around 250 medieval works in ten different languages, the Arthurian romance is undoubtedly one of the most successful epic genres of the European Middle Ages - with an unbroken tradition of productive reception to this day. Arthurian literature, which originated as regional-political poetry with reference to an older oral narrative tradition, soon became a forum for the supra-regional discussion of values, a space for finding social or cultural identity or a field for experimenting with literary forms. The volumes of the German-Austrian section of the Arthurian Society bring together the various research perspectives of the philologies dealing with Arthurian literature, each focusing on a central question. The volumes examine the relevance of concepts discussed in current literary and cultural studies (such as "myth" and "body concepts") for Arthurian research and the contribution that Arthurian research, which is fundamentally multi-perspectival due to its diversity of subjects and interdisciplinarity, can make to worldwide cultural and literary research.

I felt both the sticky heat of Egypt, and the cool breeze of the Queen's apartments at night." ***** "10/10 a much needed exploration into one of the most infamous women in ancient history" ***** "It shows her not so much as the beautiful seductress we see in other stories but clever and young ruler, and later mother. I liked seeing her grow as a person and ruler, but what I enjoyed most was her relationship with her slave and companion, it added a vulnerable side to her character that we rarely see." ***** "Solomon's gift is to immerse you in an immediately believable world and to connect you with character from the start. I found myself constantly wanting to check details reading Cleopatra, fascinated by the woman coming alive before me." ***** "I raced through the final section, heart wrung for the women whose story is forgotten in the plays. Just brilliant!"

Loeb Classical Library

Eclectic essays on ethics, education, and much else besides. Plutarch (Plutarchus), ca. AD 45-120, was born at Chaeronea in Boeotia, in central Greece. He is renowned for his forty-six Parallel Lives, biographies planned to be ethical examples in pairs (in each pair, one Greek figure and one comparable Roman), though the last four lives are single. But he was also a teacher of philosophy in Rome, a priest at Delphi, and an engaging essayist with an urbane and judicious style whose many other extant works, some seventy in number and known collectively as Moralia or Moral Essays, are important sources for classical philosophy, ethics, and religion. Whether advising about marriage and education, discussing prophecy, divine providence, and life after death, setting forth rules for politicians, or commenting on personal virtues and vices, the Moralia reveal not only Plutarch's own thinking but also the world in which he lived. The Loeb Classical Library edition of the Moralia is in sixteen volumes, volume XIII having two parts. Volume XVI comprises an analytical index that provides access to the great riches to be found within the collection. In the present volume are five essays: The Education of Children, How the Young Man Should Study Poetry, On Listening to Lectures, How to Tell a Flatterer from a Friend, and How a Man May Become Aware of His Progress in Virtue. This edition, which replaces the original by Frank Cole Babbitt (1927), offers text, translation, and annotation that are fully current with modern scholarship.

The Odyssey

Thinking Literature

A sweeping account of how we are at our most human when we turn away from the pains of the world. Why do we look away from the suffering of others? Why do we cover our faces in shame? Why do we lower our heads in grief? Few gestures are as universal as the averted gaze. Fewer still are as ambivalent and inscrutable. In this incisive study, Benjamin A. Saltzman reveals how the kaleidoscopic appearance of these gestures in art, poetry, and philosophy has turned them into an essential language for our uncomfortable engagements with the world, challenging us to reflect on the ways we fundamentally relate to others. Into the horizon of contemporary discourse, Turning Away sets out from five influential scenes in which figures avert their gaze: Timanthes's Sacrifice of Iphigenia, Plato's Republic, Augustine's Confessions, Christ's Crucifixion, and the Fall and Expulsion of Adam and Eve. The gestures of aversion in these scenes refract across visual media, through philosophy and politics, into modernity and the present day, having been reimagined along the way by thinkers like Hannah Arendt, artists like Marc Chagall and Salvador Dalí, poets like Langston Hughes, and many others. Saltzman offers a timely critique of the privilege of turning away and of the too-easy condemnation of our tendencies to do so.
