Building a Better Tomorrow: Tackling Housing Deficits in the Global South

<div>
In this book, José Rente Nascimento explores the economic, environmental, social, and cultural dynamics of the Amazon. The book weaves five centuries of transformation, highlighting geographical conditions, Amerindian resource stewardship, the rubber boom, postcolonial policies, and today’s development pressures. Spanning infrastructure, mining, ranching, and agricultural expansion, the book analyzes Amazonian challenges within their historical context.
Drawing on lessons from both failed policies and successful initiatives, Nascimento addresses urgent contemporary issues, including deforestation, indigenous welfare, land tenure, forest-based development, and the complex balance between environmental protection and sustainable growth.
More than a historical account, this book presents a conceptual framework that links past trajectories to present challenges, providing an essential and inspiring resource for students, policymakers, researchers, and all those seeking to learn from Amazonia’s history to secure its sustainable future.

It explores how policies, funding mechanisms, and financial instruments are mobilised to support sustainability, while addressing critical challenges such as transparency gaps, fund misallocation, and regulatory inefficiencies. With growing global commitments under the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the book emphasises the urgent need for robust governance to ensure climate finance delivers equitable and impactful results. Blending theoretical insights with practical case studies, the book analyses how innovations in public-private partnerships, blockchain, AI, and fintech are transforming climate finance governance. It covers key topics including carbon markets, green bonds, ESG investing, and climate risk assessment, drawing on examples from both developed and developing economies. Designed for researchers, policymakers, and financial professionals, this global outlook provides actionable recommendations to enhance accountability, risk management, and inclusive access to climate finance.

Community Development Research and Practice Series

Laying the Groundwork for Community Wealth Building

Asset-Based Community Development and Business Cooperatives

This book studies one part of the Sundarbans, the largest and one of the most fragile mangrove ecosystems in the world. The study is placed in the context of highly topical international debates on biodiversity, climate change and economic transformation, in a region of South Asia that still faces immense population pressure and severe poverty. An analysis of existing and potential future policies sets the debate in a comparative international perspective that has relevance well beyond the confines of South Asia.

 While there have been a large number of studies on the socio-economic aspects of physical quality of life in the Sunderbans, there are very few perception studies except at a basic level. The current volume has two major aspects. The first part contains a detailed study of overall
 demography and objective life condition
 which includes (a) quality and ownership of private goods – equipment and machinery, livestock, house, land, consumer goods; (b) quality of public goods and amenities and their accessibility; (c) objective measures of relatively abstract factors related to social, political and familial environment such as quality of governance, extent of gender equality, social inclusion, social harmony, security, law and order, family bondings; (d) financial assets and indebtedness; (e) income and expenditure; (f) natural and man-made calamity, and; (g) vulnerability related to points (d), (e) and (f) above.

 The second part comprises a detailed study of
 subjective life satisfaction, and value systems and priorities
 . The former refers to
 people’s perception
 regarding the various facets of their
 personal life
 - economic situation, standard of living, family and friends, work life and environment as also their
 perception about the well-being of the community
 . This refers to the overall social, business, and political environment such as social and help network, social inclusion, communal harmony, participation in civic and social activities, job opportunities and employment generation, government developmental project initiatives, disaster management initiatives, law and order etc.
 Value systems and priorities
 refer to individual rankings of the factors considered as necessary for personal happiness and for a happy society. It also includes their preferred rankings of government developmental initiatives and views regarding effectiveness and impact of such initiatives.&nbsp;

Discusses a micro- and quantitative study of perception and value systems Covers a broad range of socio-economic aspects
 Explores links between quality of life and vulnerability, both actual and perceived

Measuring Quality of Life and Human Vulnerability in the Sunderbans Region of India

This open access book examines the role played by international, regional and national legal frameworks in holding corporations operating in the natural resource sector accountable for human rights violations in the Global South. Influential scholars from across the world address pressing issues concerning the integration of business and human rights standards for better governance of natural resources. They focus particularly on extractive and multinational companies in the Global South and their role in the transition to net zero societies. The book also examines legal mechanisms for corporate accountability under international, human rights and transnational law, using case studies from selected countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. The book reviews proposals for an enforceable legal framework to hold corporations accountable for human rights abuses and environmental damage. It considers initiatives such as the OECD Guidelines on Multinational Enterprises, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the UN's Draft Business and Human Rights Treaty, and the European Union Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. The book is essential reading for researchers working in the fields of business and human rights law, natural resources law, environmental law and international law, as well as corporate and human rights practitioners litigating in the energy and natural resources sectors. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Bloomsbury Open Collections Library Collective.

Realising that the need for conservation of the Outstanding Universal Values (OUVs) of World Heritage Sites still remains much more dominant than a holistic approach towards the wider social, economic and environmental implications, the book "World Heritage and Sustainable Development" aims to examine and propose ways in which sustainable cultural development can become an integral part of successful conservation and management within the context of World Heritage Sites (WHSs). In order to do so, thematic chapters concentrating on issues of building conservation, climate change and human development within the context of World Heritage Sites (WHSs) will be included.
