"We are a much-lectured people," wrote Robert Spence Watson in 1897. Beginning at mid-century, cities and towns across England used the popular lecture for purposes ranging from serious education to effervescent entertainment and from regional pride to imperial belonging. Over time, the popular lecture became the quintessential embodiment of Victorian knowledge-based culture, which itself ranged from the production of new knowledge in the most elite of learned societies to the consumption of established knowledge in middle-class clubs and the hundreds of humble mechanics' institutions initially founded to provide scientific instruction to workers. What did the "average" Victorian talk and think about? How did the knowledge-based culture of lecture and debate enable men and women to demonstrate both civic engagement and cultural competence? How does this knowledge-based culture and its changing expression give us ways to look at Victorian citizenship long before the extension of the franchise? With engaging and accessible prose Anne Rodrick draws from a variety of primary sources to provide fascinating answers to these pertinent questions. Based on the analysis of several thousand lectures and debates delivered over more than 50 years, this book digs deeply into what those individuals below the most elite levels thought, heard, debated, and claimed as a badge of cultural competence. A Memoir with Manuscripts

The Migrants

This book investigates the privately negotiated financial arrangements made by divorcing couples where no legal advice or financial orders were sought. It calls for a re-evaluation of the assumptions of autonomy and agency held by policy makers and adds to the debates around the role and purpose of family law in England and Wales. Drawing on interviews with divorced military wives, the book provides a case study of the operation of current family law principles and values in a context where highly gendered familial roles are a key feature. It provides fresh insight into the challenges presented by neoliberal understandings of autonomy and agency, which presume that individuals have freely chosen to organise their lives in a way that creates dependency and financial precarity. It adopts a socio-legal framework to examine how the interpersonal dynamics established during marriage influence financial decision-making. The book argues that there are important lessons to be learned from military wives, shedding light on the highly gendered patterns of behaviour within military families which are replicated in the wider population. It advocates the importance of recognising the many factors that limit autonomy and agency during marriage and that are not mitigated against in the family justice system, which instead permits - and encourages - unfair and unequal financial arrangements to be made. This book is essential reading for lawyers, students of family law, and policy makers.

The General Strike of 1926: the tragic story of how the world's best organized working class confronted the world's most powerful, and self-confident, government. In May, 1926, nearly three million British workers downed tools to support nearly one million of their countrymen, miners whose employers meant to lengthen their working day and cut their pay. This General Strike brought the country to a grinding halt - which, according to Conservative Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, represented a threat not merely to the nation but to the parliamentary system itself. For nine days, the world's best organized working class confronted the world's most powerful, and self-confident, government. And yet the outcome was never in doubt, for Britain's most important trade-union leaders thought as Baldwin did, although they kept saying they were engaged in a wages dispute only. Really, they feared winning even more than they feared losing. In Nine Days in May, award-winning author and historian Jonathan Schneer mines hitherto untapped archival sources to explain why and how the Strike came about, why and how it was waged and countered, why and how it ended. In addition to government reports and TUC reports, he uses reports of undercover agents and spies, "special" constables sworn in for the duration of the Strike, volunteer strike-breakers, Communist agitators, trade-union leaders and rank-and-file members of trade unions; also, of course, the papers of politicians of all parties. This is a tale of Shakespearian dimensions, replete with tragic heroes and villains and buffoons and opportunists and double-dealers, and contending, evenly matched, forces - both of which meant to do their duty whatever the cost. There may never be another general strike in Britain, but the General Strike of 1926 was one for the ages, illuminating the human condition.
