A science-based, practical blueprint for cultivating a life - at work and at home - full of a sense of belonging, joy and vitality, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Culture Code<ul><li>How do we set about finding greater fulfilment in our lives?</li><li>How do we achieve a sense of well-being?</li><li>How do we foster relationships that will add depth and meaning to our existence?</li><li>How, in other words, do we go from living to flourishing?</li></ul>In his new book, bestselling author Daniel Coyle trains his expert eye on the people who have demonstrated exceptional powers of dynamism and connectivity, and teases out their secrets.<ul><li>The Chilean miners who withstood being trapped deep underground for 33 days by establishing rituals of belonging and purpose.</li><li>The Dutch community that sparked urban renewal through a smart system of self-organisation.</li><li>The delicatessen in Michigan that has grown into a multi-million dollar enterprise, not by writing business plans but by shaping attentional space - focussing on how people show up, listen and engage.</li></ul>From such remarkable stories of individual and group achievement, Coyle distils the core dynamics that make them possible - and, in the process, shows how small, deliberate shifts in how we think and interact can create extraordinary impact.Whether you are seeking a deeper sense of personal contentment or aspiring to transform a team or community, Flourish is the indispensable guide to shaping the future you want.

Perspectives on Global Affairs

With more than 180 million migrants worldwide, roughly 2.3 percent of the global population, migration is a global phenomenon, characterized by cross-border movements that are strikingly varied. This book discusses the current state of migration as a question of governance rather than crisis, examining contemporary migration movements within the legal, political, and economic structures that shape who may move, and why. The book focuses on Latin America, a region shaped by long histories of mobility, and the immigration policy frameworks of the United States, the European Union, and Latin America and the Caribbeans, tracing how different institutional architectures face similar migratory pressures but obtain markedly different outcomes. Ultimately, the book argues that migration functions as a governance barometer, by introducing the concept of policy elasticity, and exploring the limitations of existing “one-size-fits-all” approaches.

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLEROne of the most important conservative voices of the last century takes on the dangers of secularism, perhaps the most important issue in our lives.Your beloved dog and a stranger are drowning. Who do you try to save first?Every time famed radio host, New York Times bestselling author, and Co-founder of PragerU, Dennis Prager, has asked this question, one-third of the audience voted for the dog, one-third for the stranger, and one-third was not sure. We live in an era when people increasingly make moral judgments based on their emotions. But if feelings determine what is right and wrong, then whether murder, rape, and theft are wrong is no more than an opinion. Why are those who riot and destroy property wrong, especially if they feel their behavior is justified? Prager explains that without objective morality, the world will descend into chaos, with every individual engaging in any behavior they feel is right. For fifty years, Dennis Prager, one of the best-known public intellectuals in the Western world, has explored the vital role Judeo-Christian values play in shaping individual lives and entire societies. In If There Is No God, he engages in provocative and sometimes heated exchanges with questioners who offer some of the greatest challenges he has faced concerning how one determines good and evil and why one’s feelings can be life-enhancing yet morally unimportant. If God exists, why doesn’t He punish the unjust? Why does He allow the innocent to suffer? How can religion better the human condition when so many of the religious are often immoral? These timeless questions are in urgent need of answers. The reader need not be religious or even believe in God to find the arguments and debates in this book compelling and meaningful. All one needs is reason to appreciate the ideas Prager presents.Thought-provoking, important, and accessible for the devout and the skeptic, If There Is No God is a guide for anyone seeking clarity in a morally troubled age.

The Battle Over Who Defines Good and Evil

If There Is No God

'Michael Auerbach has one of the most original minds I've ever encountered . . . This is a dazzling and entertaining book . . . But it is also an urgent warning' PATRICK RADDEN KEEFE, author of Empire of Pain A brilliant exploration of the phenomenon of prediction markets that asks: what happens when democracy becomes another commodity? Prediction markets are sweeping the world, fundamentally changing the nature of gambling - and the very ways in which we attempt to divine the future. Posed as binary 'Yes/No' questions about future events, prediction markets allow any difference of opinion - whether on pop culture or politics, wars or assassinations - to be financialised. A regulatory minefield with moral implications that divide nations, governments and bettors, they have proved as effective at accurately predicting the timing of missile strikes as they have at calling the outcomes of elections. But are these markets really a new phenomenon? And what does it mean when those tasked with safeguarding democracy hold financial stakes in its volatility? From Renaissance Rome, where merchants wagered on papal conclaves, through nineteenth-century London's wartime coffee house gossip, to the Pentagon's ill-fated terrorism futures exchange and blockchain-based betting on Polymarket today, The Big Bet tells the gripping five-hundred-year story of a permissive regime that no one designed and no one voted for.Drawing on deep expertise, Michael Auerbach examines how these markets are changing our world, and what they mean for the future where democracy becomes just another commodity to be priced and traded. Because prediction markets are not an anomaly - they are the logical endpoint of a society that has applied market capitalism to every aspect of life. And in a world where everything is a wager and nothing is off limits, knowing where the chips will fall matters more than ever.

Prediction Markets and the Future of Democracy

The Big Bet

For American workers, the social contract is broken. This book gives a firsthand view of where the breaks occurred, and a prescription for rebuilding it to give workers their due. With AI making the decisions and CEOs and moguls making the money, sometimes it seems that most workers today might as well be drones. If not for a long string of missed opportunities over the last 50 years, it might have been different. In Roads Not Taken, Thomas Kochan reviews the turning points where the social contract fractured and broke, reducing workers’ voices as well as their compensation, benefits, and status. And in the lessons learned from these historical examples, he identifies the foundation for building a new labor relations system that ensures workers will share in the benefits from AI and puts America on course for an innovative and durable social contract at work. As a longtime advisor to government, labor, and management leaders, Kochan offers an eyewitness perspective on the mounting mistakes made in America’s labor relations system beginning, roughly, with Ronald Reagan’s firing of striking air traffic controllers in 1981. His book makes a strong case for new strategies on the part of labor unions and other worker advocacy groups, business, and government—strategies not wedded to the legacy labor law and practice that have failed American workers for so long. Recasting the social contract on this basis, Kochan insists, is key to rebuilding our democracy and its institutions after the damage wrought in recent years.

Shortlisted for the Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the Year Award How 1,000 years of global history show why technological and economic progress is often followed by stagnation and even collapse In How Progress Ends, Carl Benedikt Frey challenges the conventional belief that economic and technological progress is inevitable. For most of human history, stagnation was the norm, and even today progress and prosperity in the world's largest, most advanced economies--the United States and China--have fallen short of expectations. To appreciate why we cannot depend on any AI-fueled great leap forward, Frey offers a remarkable and fascinating journey across the globe, spanning the past 1,000 years, to explain why some societies flourish and others fail in the wake of rapid technological change. By examining key historical moments--from the rise of the steam engine to the dawn of AI--Frey shows why technological shifts have shaped, and sometimes destabilized, entire civilizations. He explores why some leading technological powers of the past--such as Song China, the Dutch Republic, and Victorian Britain--ultimately lost their innovative edge, why some modern nations such as Japan had periods of rapid growth followed by stagnation, and why planned economies like the Soviet Union collapsed after brief surges of progress. Frey uncovers a recurring tension in history: while decentralization fosters the exploration of new technologies, bureaucracy is crucial for scaling them. When institutions fail to adapt to technological change, stagnation inevitably follows. Only by carefully balancing decentralization and bureaucracy can nations innovate and grow over the long term--findings that have worrying implications for the United States, Europe, China, and other economies today. Through a rich narrative that weaves together history, economics, and technology, How Progress Ends reveals that managing the future requires us to draw the right lessons from the past.

We do not seem to understand that in destroying nature, we destroy ourselves. My daughter&nbsp;is growing up in what feels like a much more hostile environment facing climate instability, the rise of misogyny and the roll back of women's bodily rights. I wanted to comfort and empower her and let her see that our greatest weapon in a floundering world is the imagination.'

The Danger of Small Things

What goals are still feasible for the politics of emancipation on a ruined planet? This is where we are. Today's techno-oligarchs are not concerned with saving the planet; rather, they have accepted the end of progress and are focused on safeguarding their wealth in the face of an impending political and ecological collapse. Artificial intelligence and algorithms make decisions for us. Climate breakdown has long steamed past the wreckage of the Paris Agreement.Perhaps the accelerationists have the right idea. Accelerationism - which aims to resolve the current crisis through the intensification of technological development - is the only philosophy not clinging to the now-extinct idea of progress. The idea has gained ground on both the left and right: but the right-wing is shot through with misanthropy, while the left remains entangled in a faith in technological progress and the domination of nature.Transcending capitalism at the end of progress requires a synthesis of the two. The result of this synthesis: Dark Socialism. From 'rock star philosopher' Kohei Saito comes an anticapitalist clarion call for our breakneck times, channeling despair into a socialist project equal to the end of progress.

Hope in a Ruined World

Dark Socialism

Humanity's most spectacular era yet is increasingly within reach. So why are we doing everything we can to hold it back? The bestselling author of The Rational Optimist delivers a daring vision of the future - one that is potentially dazzling, but only if we stop sleepwalking into self-inflicted decline. We're on the brink of a truly spectacular explosion of productivity and prosperity, argues Matt Ridley, thanks to a combination of artificial intelligence, material science and genomic knowledge that is unprecedented in its scope and implications. With characteristic wit and ferocity, he confronts the irrational pessimism that dominates public discourse and examines the bureaucratic bloat, regulatory overreach, ideological superstition and crony capitalism that stand in the way.Optimistic in conclusion but unsparing in its analysis, The Flourishing is a rousing call to achieve and innovate by refusing to settle for a merely adequate future when a magnificent one is within reach.

*A New York Times Notable Book * A Financial Times Best Book of the Year 'A learned, formidable and vivid story... Readers around the world will study and ponder this monumental work of history, agreeing and arguing with it, all the while affirming its generational importance, for decades to come' The New York Times 'Epic... Read this book and you will learn innumerable things you did not previously know culled from places you have never been' Financial Times A brilliant global narrative that unravels the defining story of the past thousand years No other phenomenon has shaped human history as decisively as capitalism. It structures how we live and work, how we think about ourselves and others, how we organise our politics. Sven Beckert situates the story of capitalism within the largest conceivable geographical and historical framework in this fascinating new book.Capitalism, argues Beckert, was born global. Emerging from merchant communities across Asia, Africa and Europe, capitalism's radical recasting of economic life rooted itself only gradually. Then it burst onto the world scene, as European states and merchants built a powerful alliance that would propel them across the oceans. This epic drama corresponded at no point to an idealised dream of free markets. All along, state-backed institutions and imperial expansions shaped its dynamics.Capitalism decentres the European perspective, highlighting agency, resistance, innovation and ruthless coercion around the world through to the present with the rise of Asian economies, particularly China. Sven Beckert doesn't merely add up capitalism's debits and credits in this monumental book, but allows us to think afresh about the past to help us re-imagine the future.
