This book argues that the pursuit of universal norms remains a worthwhile endeavour for the international legal discipline. It does this while also engaging with the very active imperialist critique of such norms. The study has 4 aims; firstly to illustrate the role that the idea and debate around norms have in developing international law, and secondly to address the philosophical concerns around identifying such norms. It moves on to explore whether a legal/practical instantiation of the universal can be done without taking a particular position/perspective. And finally, it turns to the impact the universal has on the development of international human rights law. Public international law, human rights and legal philosophy scholars will welcome this original theoretical-philosophical perspective on an enduring debate in the field of international law.

How should the Arctic be viewed in the 21st century? In this book, a leading commentator assesses the competing players for the Arctic, looking at broad questions of governance and security. This book articulates and defends a sceptical general account of parliamentary sovereignty.

It challenges the orthodox approach to this fundamental doctrine by making three key heretical claims. First, there are some laws that Parliament cannot make. Second, there are several ways in which primary legislation can be overridden or set aside by institutions other than Parliament. And third, Parliament has the power to bind itself as to the substance of future legislation. All three positions are developed using arguments which depend on existing legal materials and are compatible with the normative underpinnings of the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty. 

The book combines theoretical and doctrinal analysis. The theoretical part of the book situates Parliament's authority to legislate in the broader context of an examination of constitutional and political authority. It develops a conception of the ways in which competing views on the scope of Parliament's legislative authority are mediated into law. The doctrinal part of the book reconsiders Parliament's legal position. It proposes a novel conception of Parliament's power to bind itself, rooted in the idea of commitments. It defends the existence of a judicial power to impose narrowly conceived freestanding limits on Parliament's law-making authority, rooted in the rule of law. Finally, the book examines the challenges posed to parliamentary sovereignty by both its internal procedures and the devolved legislatures.

This book provides a multi-jurisdictional analysis of the role of law in accelerating the development of floating offshore wind energy. With ongoing technological advancements in the context of the energy transition, floating offshore wind represents a significant advancement in the global transition towards sustainable energy. Debates around the inherent ecological tensions raised by fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines, as well as the value of deeper offshore wind exploration, are considered alongside unanswered questions on the complexity of the marine environment and its governance in relation to the deployment of floating offshore wind energy. This book reimagines gender-based poverty in urban areas as a human rights issue, offering a transformative legal framework to address one of the most pressing and overlooked challenges of our time. More than half the world's population now lives in cities, with women comprising a growing share of the urban population/residents/people living in urban areas. Yet gender-based poverty remains a persistent and under-addressed issue in international human rights law. No existing convention explicitly tackles the intersection of gender, poverty, and urbanisation. This book breaks new ground by arguing that gender-based poverty in urban areas can - and should - be recognised as a human rights violation. Drawing on legal theory, feminist legal studies, and international human rights frameworks, the book critiques current legal approaches that treat poverty as a social or moral issue, rather than a structural and multidimensional injustice. It advances Sandra Fredman's four-dimensional model of substantive equality - disadvantage, recognition, participation, and transformation - as a more effective legal lens. Focusing on the right to adequate housing, the book explores how states' obligations to respect, protect, and fulfil can be clarified and strengthened through this model.
