Applied Risk Analysis for Guiding Homeland Security Policy and Decisions

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Other, Harvard University, language: English, abstract: This paper envisions to find out what has been done to help reduce the level of poverty in Least Developed Countries (LCDs). Moreover, it aims to identify and examine the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the strategies implemented. Finally, it will be determined why it has been so difficult to graduate from the LDC category. The Least Developed Countries are a sub-group of the Developing Countries (formerly referred to as less developed countries) and are defined by the United Nations as countries with low levels of income and human capital, and high economic vulnerability. Most of them are characterized by limited economic growth and export diversification, and a lack of competitive industries and exploitable natural resources. They also confront severe structural impediments to development and are vulnerable to natural disasters, such as droughts, floods, and hurricanes.  World Bank has further sub-classified 23 of the 47 LDCs as "fragile", and argues that these fragile countries experienced below-average GDP growth, under 4 percent a year compared with almost 6 percent in LDCs as a whole between 2000 and 2014. This is problematic because a growth rate of 7 percent has been targeted by international institutions to drive development in these countries.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1.0, , language: English, abstract: Until the end of December 2018, Bitcoin was declared to be dead 338 times. Besides strong representation in media and public discussion, the cryptocurrency went through the ripple effect resulting in a peak of 19,871 $/BTC on December 17, 2017, followed by a dramatic devaluation resulting in a price of 3,896 $/BTC on December 31, 2018. The cryptocurrency is related to high volatility, strong herd behavior and bounded rationality. But to what extent does the perception of risk in investment’s context differ from Bitcoin and other investments? In the following paper, the technical implications and a brief historical development are provided in the second chapter. In the third chapter, the mainstream literature on investment behavior, risk aversion and measuring instruments for risk aversion is reviewed. In order to approach the research question, an online-survey among students is conducted which is presented in the fourth chapter and evaluated in the fifth chapter. In the last chapter, both the research method and the results are critically reflected and an outlook on future developments is given.

To what Extent does the Perception of Risk from Investments and Bitcoin Investments Differ? Insights From a Choice Experiment

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Lusaka, language: English, abstract: The Living Conditions Monitoring Survey (LCMS) conducted in 2015 revealed that rural poverty stood at 76.6 percent and 23.4 percent for urban poverty respectively. To this effect, rural poverty still remains high and predominantly a rural phenomenon. This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the out-grower schemes on reducing poverty and answer the general research question on how effective were the out-grower schemes in reducing poverty in rural Zambia.Pragmatism was the philosophical view that underpinned the study and it applied to the mixed research method approach for this study. The convergent parallel strategy of the mixed research method approach was used. The target population was 50,000 smallholder farmers and a questionnaire with open ended questions (qualitative) and closed questions (quantitative) was administered to a sample size of 396 smallholders farmers. Simple random sampling was used to select smallholder farmers.Qualitative data was analyzed by using the inductive process of building from the data to broad themes and then to interpretation. Quantitative data was analysed by using the Chi-square tests to ascertain association between critical variables measured by categories of out-grower farmers and independent farmers. The T-tests compared the treatment and control groups on variables of interest. The coefficient of variation (CV) was used to gauge the level of respondents’ disagreement (dissention) in responses while coefficient of consensus (CC) was used to gauge the level of respondents’ agreement (consensus) in responses, applied to the Likert scale and any other ordinal responses.The findings from the study revealed that the out-grower schemes implementation has contributed to a positive change in poverty reduction to smallholder farmers participating in the out-grower scheme. Further, out-grower farmers have improved their knowledge in understanding the operation of the out-grower scheme. Subsequently, the out-grower schemes have benefited the communities. In this regard, the study concluded that the out-grower schemes have been effective in reducing poverty in the rural areas of Zambia. The study recommended that there was need to address the issue of power imbalance between the out-grower farmers and the out-grower firms.

Danach wird das Enterprise Risikomanagement betrachtet, welches ein neuartiger Ansatz zum traditionellen Risikomanagement ist, und ob dieser Ansatz wirtschaftlichen Sinn macht.
