We must look beyond the now, the current economy on our doorstep, and … reach out to a humanity that lies dormant in all of us.While the depth and sophistication of South Africa's financial and capital markets are lauded by indices the world over, South Africa is also considered to be the most unequal society in the world. The Economy On Your Doorstep probes the reasons for this tragic paradox of South African life and tries to go through and beyond the graphs, margin calls, trading updates, indices and earnings reports to explain how economic 'actions' frame the lives of South Africans in a transitional society faced with the challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality.The economy is and always has been primarily about people. How they live, what they produce, under what conditions and what social, political and environmental factors influence decisions of consumption, investment and distribution, and how they act under conditions of uncertainty, scarcity, need and crisis. After all, economies are about people coming together to produce, exchange, distribute and consume goods and services that emerge from their communities and those of others. Applied Risk Analysis for Guiding Homeland Security Policy and Decisions

Besides strong representation in media and public discussion, the cryptocurrency went through the ripple effect resulting in a peak of 19,871 $/BTC on December 17, 2017, followed by a dramatic devaluation resulting in a price of 3,896 $/BTC on December 31, 2018. The cryptocurrency is related to high volatility, strong herd behavior and bounded rationality. But to what extent does the perception of risk in investment’s context differ from Bitcoin and other investments? In the following paper, the technical implications and a brief historical development are provided in the second chapter. In the third chapter, the mainstream literature on investment behavior, risk aversion and measuring instruments for risk aversion is reviewed. In order to approach the research question, an online-survey among students is conducted which is presented in the fourth chapter and evaluated in the fifth chapter. In the last chapter, both the research method and the results are critically reflected and an outlook on future developments is given.

To what Extent does the Perception of Risk from Investments and Bitcoin Investments Differ? Insights From a Choice Experiment

Machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other algorithmic applications are some of the most common influencers in business applications. They present numerous solutions to business management problems, including banking risk management. In the last decade, risk management has gained greater prominence in financial services. In the past, banks focused on the detection, measuring, and reporting of risks. However, they are now leveraging on machine learning for greater accuracy and efficacy in risk management. As such, this paper explored different ways that machine learning applies in banking risk management. To achieve the objective of this study, the researcher conducted a comprehensive literature review on the topic of machine learning in banking risk management. The researcher found considerable industry and academic research focusing on developments in the financial services industry, especially in relation to risk management. It reviewed the literature, analysing and evaluating various risk management machine-learning techniques. It identified risk management problem areas and explored various ways of addressing them. The review showed that machine learning learning in risk management in financial services sector was still under-researched. While there were many studies on credit risks, other risks such as liquidity risks, market risks, and operational risks saw minimal attention. Nevertheless, machine learning applications were found to have the potential to develop more effective risk management models. Machine learning is leveraged on different data types to predict potential events with greater accuracy and estimate losses associated with different risk types. In addition, the machine learning techniques in risk management were found to provide better and more accurate results than traditional statistical models. Though machine learning suggests improving banking risk management, there are some areas that need further study. For instance, the paper suggested in-depth studies on machine learning models for different types of banking risks.

Machine Learning in Banking Risk Management

Currently, there are 16 private commercial banks working in the country, some of which are celebrating their 20 years' anniversaries. To represent all the 16 private banks, the researcher grouped them in two categories. Wegagen Bank, United Bank and Bank of Abyssinia has been selected from the earliest established commercial banks and Abay Bank, Buna international Bank and Berhan Bank were selected from the lately established banks in simple random sampling method with a total number of 51 employees working risk management area from the selected 6 commercial banks. The data were collected through questionnaire and face to face interview. The questionnaires were distributed to all risk management department staff of each selected commercial banks. The interviews were made with NBE’s bank supervision department and directors as well as managers and directors of commercial banks. 51 questionnaires were distributed, properly filled and fully returned to the researcher. The finding of the research reveals that, the major challenge faced by commercial banks are weak ton at the top, absence of qualified staff, absence of advanced risk management technology and lower management attention and the  recommendations were, Banks should have an enterprise risk management committee at management level, Banks should conduct workshops or panel discussion to identify enterprise level risks in each activity and Banks should have comprehensive risk register and database to run their business with smooth operations and absence of interruption.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Explores the failures of family court and calls for immediate and permanent change&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;At the turn of the twentieth century, American social reformers created the first juvenile court. They imagined a therapeutic court where informality, specially trained public servants, and a kindly, all-knowing judge would assist children and families. But the dream of a benevolent means of judicial problem-solving was never realized. A century later, children and families continue to be failed by this deeply flawed court.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;The End of Family Court &lt;/i&gt;rejects the foundational premise that family court can do good when intervening in family life and challenges its endless reinvention to survive. Jane M. Spinak illustrates how the procedures and policies of modern family court are deeply entwined in a heritage of racism, a profound disdain for poverty, and assimilationist norms intent on fixing children and families who are different. And the court’s interventionist goals remain steeped in an approach to equity and well-being that demands individual rather than collective responsibility for the security and welfare of families.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Spinak proposes concrete steps toward abolishing the court: shifting most family supports out of the court’s sphere, vastly reducing the types and number of matters that need court intervention, and ensuring that any case that requires legal adjudication has the due process protections of a court of law. Keeping in view the research questions, the nature of this research is a qualitative case study. The findings of the study reveal that there exists a substantial difference between Islamic and conventional banks in risk management practices, risk identification, liquidity risk analysis and risk governance. Islamic bank is performing competently in liquidity risk analysis, whereas, conventional bank is competent in risk management practice, risk identification, and risk governance.The risk management, risk monitoring and reporting, and liquidity risk analysis are weak in Islamic banks. Whereas, risk analysis and assessment are weak in conventional banks. Due to lack of risk management training and limited knowledge of risk management practices, understanding of risk management practices is weak in Islamic bank. The study also reveals that in terms of rules and regulations, there is no proper institutionalisation of Islamic institutions regarding risk management as compared to conventional banking where the risk management practices are institutionalised by Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.
