Most guitarists today think of USA as the land of the guitar. Classical guitars come from Spain but rock, jazz and folk guitars must surely be American? They know the 'great' names - Gibson, Epiphone, Fender, Gretsch, Martin. How many of them know that Christian Friedrich Martin was born in Markneukirchen, Germany, in 1796 and emigrated to USA at the age of 37?
In fact many of the world's best and most interesting guitars came from a tiny area in the south-eastern tip of what became East Germany and nearby western Czechoslovakia and they are almost unknown in the English-speaking world
The Bate Collection is a museum of musical instruments in the University of Oxford and owns a collection of over 100 guitars donated by the author. Half of them were made by German-speaking Czech craftsmen expelled from their homeland after WWII, resettling in Bavaria; the other half by their former neighbours in Saxony, with whom they had worked closely for three centuries but who now found themselves behind the Iron Curtain.
This book features every instrument in the collection together with a distillation of decades of research into the many makers featured. The introduction offers a summary of the socio-political background and the way it lead to the decline and almost the extinction of what was once the most productive centre of stringed instrument making in the world. Lavishly illustrated with photos of all of the instruments in the collection, plus a unique guide to help the collector to identify the maker of his instrument.

The first book of its kind in the English language it is published in co-operation with the Bate Collection Museum of Musical Instruments, University of Oxford.

Benjamin Burkhart examines how popular jazz musicians use TikTok and how jazz is represented on the platform. He investigates how the musicians deal with the platform's affordances, tailor their content to the short-form video format, and interact with the platform's algorithmic system. The study also examines the musicians' expectations regarding TikTok users' actions, and reveals which jazz-related content achieves the greatest visibility on the platform. Through interviews with popular content creators, the study shows that the socio-technical interaction between musicians and the platform leads to a very specific representation of jazz on TikTok.

Diesmal bin ich mit dem Wunsch an meine Musik herangegangen, sie als etwas Gleichberechtigtes zu verstehen, nicht als etwas nach dem Motto 'Ich bin der Chef'', sagt Julian Lage über sein fünftes Blue-Note-Album und Nachfolger des GRAMMY-nominierten 'Speak To Me', erneut produziert von Joe Henry. Diesmal wird der Gitarrenvirtuose mit einer neuen Band feat. John Medeski (Hammond B3, Piano), Jorge Roeder (Double Bass) und Kenny Wollesen (Drums, Percussion) zu hören sein. Während 'Speak To Me' Lages großes Statement als improvisierender Bandleader war, geht es ihm auf seinem neuen Album darum, sich selbst mehr als Bandmitglied zu verstehen und die von ihm geschriebenen Stücke gemeinsam mit seinem neuen Ensemble zu erkunden. Ein prominenter Teil des neuen Sounds ist dabei Organist John Medeski. Julian Lages moderner Gitarren-Sound trifft in dieser Kombination auf Anklänge klassischer Gitarre/Orgel-Sessions der Jazzgeschichte, wie z.B. von Grant Green &amp; Larry Young, Wes Montgomery &amp; Jimmy Smith oder Kenny Burrell &amp; Jack McDuff.

Jazz übte eine eminente kulturelle Wirkung auf zahlreiche Sphären der neuen Öffentlichkeit Deutschlands nach der Befreiung 1945 aus und wurde zum Ausdruck eines komplexen Zeit- und Lebensgefühls, das weit über Liebhaberkreise hinaus Einfluss auch auf Literatur und Film, Debatten und Diskurse genommen hat.

Das Buch zeigt in konzisen Lektüren der unterschiedlichsten Zeugnisse - von Fan-Zines und Leserbriefen über Essays und Sachliteratur, Romane, Hörspiele und Filme bis zu Zeitschriften wie "twen" oder mündlichen Überlieferungen aus der "Exi"-Jugendszene -, in welchem Maß Jazz durch seine enge Verknüpfung mit der radikal kritischen, dabei zugleich 'zurückgenommenen' Haltung des amerikanischen Cool gegenkulturelle Virulenz zum restaurativen Geist der Adenauer-Ära entfaltet hat. Zugleich wird deutlich, dass diese Virulenz durch die besonderen Bedingungen im Westdeutschland der Nachkriegsjahre spezifisch aufgerufen wurde. Zu diesen gerade an diesem Ort relevanten, letztlich unvermeidlichen Bedeutungsfeldern gerieten vor allem die Frage nach dem Rassismus, die Frage nach der nationalen 'Identität' und schließlich die Revision des Verhältnisses von Ethik und Ästhetik durch eine radikale Ausdruckskultur.

Jazz wird erkennbar als genuiner Ausdruck eines zutiefst skeptischen Lebensgefühls - bis die charakteristische Haltung des Cool durch die des lautstarken und aktivistischen Protestes einschließlich der sie begleitenden neuen musikalischen Soundtracks abgelöst wurde.
