A practical guide to more fully achieving a meritocratic society. As America's most vaunted cultural value, meritocracy is celebrated by some as an institution and derided by others as a myth--or even a trap. Thomas A. Cole argues in Doing Meritocracy Right that if meritocracy is to persist as an institution--and it must--it requires structural support in the private sector. For America to achieve a version of meritocracy that more closely matches our aspirations, our business leaders must first offer equity of opportunity for individuals to demonstrate and develop their talents on equal terms. Drawing on his decades of experience in advising CEOs and corporate boards, personally serving on the boards of major not-for-profits, and leading a large global law firm, Cole cites elite professional-service institutions--consultancies and law firms especially--as improbable laboratories for equity of opportunity. These workplaces, out of self-interest, are laser-focused on the quality of their professionals, seeking out talent and representation and then judging these individuals on (ideally) equal terms once they're in place. Here, Cole sees an opportunity that no public initiative or platitudes can deliver: if workplaces seek out representational diversity by applying, with thought and care, a single standard of merit--one that emphasizes character--and by providing training and mentoring on an equitable basis, then they will offer a ladder to social and economic mobility that serves both individuals and society. Cole argues that a meritocratic society is achieved in two interrelated stages: access to education; and post-education promotion to membership in the elite. The latter, he says, is the domain of business. Cole argues that the private sector is better positioned to effect reform and he encourages leaders in the private sector to pursue reform both in their organizations, in government, and in the universities and communities where they have influence. Meritocracy in the private sector can't control the many American inequities that exist on the ground of American society. But it can do social good by serving as a reliable, merit-determined path to the highest echelons of business and industry. Cole sets the stage for the discussion of reforms with a "brief history of our imperfect meritocracy," and rounds out the book with a to-do list for business leaders.

The geopolitics of American law enforcement and how it changed corporate criminal accountability in other countriesOver the past decade, many of the world's biggest companies have found themselves embroiled in legal disputes over corruption, fraud, environmental damage, tax evasion, or sanction violations. Corporations including Volkswagen, BP, and Credit Suisse have paid record-breaking fines. Many critics of globalization and corporate impunity cheer this turn toward accountability. Others, however, question American dominance in legal battles that seem to impose domestic legal norms beyond national boundaries. In this book, Cornelia Woll examines the politics of American corporate criminal law's extraterritorial reach. As governments abroad seek to respond to US law enforcement actions against their companies, they turn to flexible legal instruments that allow prosecutors to settle a case rather than bring it to court. With her analysis of the international and domestic politics of law enforcement targeting big business, Woll traces the rise of what she calls "negotiated corporate justice" in global markets. Woll charts the path to this shift through case studies of geopolitical tensions and accusations of "economic lawfare," pitting the United States against the European Union, China, and Japan. She then examines the reactions to the new legal landscape, describing institutional changes in the common law countries of the United Kingdom and Canada and the civil law countries of France, Brazil, and Germany. Through an insightful interdisciplinary analysis of how the prosecution of corporate crime has evolved in the twenty-first century, Woll demonstrates the profound transformation of the relationship between states and private actors in world markets, showing that law is part of economic statecraft in the connected global economy.

Reproductive Justice: A New Vision for the 21st Century

"Abortion has always been a part of the human story, but until recent decades, those who chose it often risked their lives in the effort to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Sydney Calkin's masterful accounting of the revolutionary impact of abortion medications is part history, part investigative reporting, and part forecasting. It is a must-read for anyone hoping to understand what is happening behind the scenes of the abortion war unfolding around the world today."--Michelle Oberman, author of Her Body, Our Laws: On the Front Lines of the Abortion War from El Salvador to Oklahoma "Sydney Calkin takes the question of women's access to abortion as a jumping-off point for a searing account of the mutual entanglement of the moral and political economies of abortion pills. She offers a compelling and fresh take on a debate that has long been dominated by questions of the precise legal status of abortion. By following the practical strategies of access-to-abortion activists, Calkin retrains our sights: away from a tight focus on abstract legal regimes and onto people doing things. Phone calls and post offices pepper her tale of emancipatory tactics of our current moment's most important feminist fight-back."--Sarah Hodges, Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine, King's College London "Abortion Pills Go Global is an enlightening examination of how medication abortion has become the go-to option around the world. As Calkin shows so well, abortion pills have become a key facet of reproductive justice."--Rickie Solinger, coauthor of Reproductive Justice: An Introduction "Abortion Pills Go Global couldn't be more timely. An important contribution to the geographies of abortion and abortion technology that speaks to how activist practice responds to--and shapes--the legal and regulatory landscapes for reproductive care. If you want to know more about how abortion technology is mobilized within and across national boundaries and how abortion services could better reach those who need them, read this book!"--Maria Fannin, Professor of Human Geography, University of Bristol "Abortion Pills Go Global is excellent, incisive, exacting, and critical. Calkin's work is always of outstanding quality, and this is no different. The book offers exciting case studies that are intellectually rich and empirically grounded, offering academics and activists regional insights as well as conceptual engagements."--Kath Browne, Professor of Human Geography, University College Dublin "I cannot think of a more timely and important book in the world right now. Calkin's Abortion Pills Go Global effectively situates medical abortion in wider reproductive justice and social decriminalization debates to tell us how abortion happens now and is changing the shape of the world we live in. It is not just a must-read for anyone interested in abortion, it is a must-read for anyone interested in geopolitics."--Sophie Harman, Professor of International Politics, Queen Mary University of London "As well written as it is well researched, Calkin's book is an incredibly thorough and nuanced study of the activist-driven provision of medical abortion pills in Europe and the United States. A must-read for anyone who is interested in knowing, fully and completely, what is happening on the ground."--Mara Clarke, co-founder, Supporting Abortions For Everyone (S.A.F.E.)

An unprecedented, up-close look into the global self-managed abortion movement. Abortion pills have made safe medication abortion possible for millions of people around the world, even in the most restrictive circumstances. In this timely book, Sydney Calkin illustrates the profound, transformative promise of these pills—which are safe, effective, and responsible for a sharp decline in maternal mortality. Abortion Pills Go Global demonstrates that the widespread practice of self-managed medication abortion makes it more difficult for countries to enforce oppressive abortion laws and less willing to do so. Taking a bold and unique geographic approach, this book follows these pills as they are manufactured and transported by feminist activists from India to Ireland, Northern Ireland, Poland, and the United States. Calkin shows that the growing availability of abortion pills in places with restrictive laws means more people have access to self-managed healthcare. Abortion Pills Go Global looks ahead to see how the broader politics of abortion could shift in response to this global movement—one that looks not to laws for protection but to on-the-ground feminist mobilizations across borders.

"American energy and its power to destroy. In the United States, the promise of a green-energy future is complicated by its realities. The country's legacy energy systems are decrepit; the rollout of new technologies is unequal and piecemeal; households find themselves increasingly without reliable or affordable access; Americans are excluded from the decisions that shape their energy futures. Having power in America has become an exercise in race, class, and wealth-in more ways than one. POWER LINES is a sweeping portrait of American energy in the twenty-first century, rendered in terms of its increasing-and inevitable-human costs. Coal miners in West Virginia lose their livelihoods as energy markets change; historically marginalized households cannot easily access new technologies; children in "sacrifice zones" adjacent to mineral-mining sites suffer health problems and limited resources; cities and towns are burdened in often unwanted and undesirable ways from the production of alternative energies. Sanya Carley and David Konisky show current challenges and an uncertain future of America's greatest policy imperative. The result is not only sobering, it's essential for planning and pursuing a clean-energy transition that improves on the errors of the past"--

"HIV emerged in the world at a time when medicine and healthcare were undergoing two major transformations: globalization and a turn toward more legally inflected, rule-based ways of doing things. It accelerated both trends. Although pestilence and disease are generally considered the domain of the biological sciences and medicine, social arrangements-and law in particular- also play a crucial role in shaping outcomes. Drawing on years of research in HIV clinics in the United States, Thailand, South Africa, and Uganda, Governing the Global Clinic examines how growing norms of legalized accountably have altered the work of healthcare and how the effects of legalization vary across different national and local contexts. A key feature of legalism is the use of universalistic language, but, in practice, rules are usually imported from rich countries (and especially the United States) to poor ones with vastly different available infrastructures and resources with which to implement them. Inequalities between countries are deeply consequential both because of the difficulties associated with adapting the laws of resource-rich countries to poorer ones and because of the distrust of poor countries by those who are monitoring compliance. Challenging readers to reconsider the impulse to use law (in both its "hard" and "soft" forms) to organize and govern social life, Governing the Global Clinic asks many hard questions. These include: When do rules solve problems, and when do rules instead create new problems? When do rules get decoupled from ethics, and when, in contrast, does the use of rules lead to deeper moral commitments? When do rules reduce inequality? And when do they reflect, reproduce, and even amplify inequality?"--
