Digital Education and Learning

The digital landscape has changed dramatically in recent years with the continued rise of social media, Artificial Intelligence, and Internet of Things applications, creating a complex ‘thick’ mediated reality spanning numerous online and offline platforms (e.g., TV, radio, newspapers, smartphones, smart devices, apps, websites, social media, and more). These changes have transformed the digital skills required to participate in contemporary society. In this book, Alexander van Deursen and Jan van Dijk build on their earlier work on digital skills (published in their 2014 book Digital Skills: Unlocking the Information Society) to explore how technological developments reshape skill demands. They systematically examine the skills needed today, assess how they are distributed across the population, and provide guidance on how policy can address gaps, offering a comprehensive framework for navigating digital inclusion in a rapidly evolving media environment.

Precarious Futures: Crime, Technology and the Web explores rapidly changing social relationships within an increasingly interconnected digital world. Challenging conventional understandings of cybercrime and questioning the continued adequacy of established criminological frameworks, it argues, inter alia, that relative deprivation, reworked as a form of post-industrial precarity, provides a powerful foundation for understanding crime and deviance in a hyper-connected, hyper-commercial neoliberal society. Drawing on empirical research, social theory, and contemporary debates on artificial intelligence, big data, surveillance, hacktivism, and digital power, the book examines how the Web has transformed opportunities for crime while reshaping the practices of governance and prediction. In doing so, Hamerton and Webber advance new theoretical models: temporal relative deprivation; the metaopticon; techniques of normalisation; and the precariousness of predictive systems, to explain the dynamics of crime and social control in an age of pervasive surveillance and artificial general intelligence. Precarious Futures advances a transdisciplinary critical digital criminology for understanding the uncertainties of the digital age. It will be essential reading for scholars and students of criminology and sociology, as well as researchers and practitioners in cyber security, computer science, artificial intelligence studies, and related fields.Christopher Hamerton is Programme Director in Criminology and Law at the School of Policy & Global Affairs, City St Georges, University of London, UK.Craig Webber is Associate Professor in Criminology in the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology at the University of Southampton, UK.

Crime, Technology and the Web

Precarious Futures

This book investigates the policy choices and institutional frameworks that powered South Korea’s remarkable transformation from postwar poverty to a global economic powerhouse, while confronting the mounting structural challenges that now threaten its sustainability. It identifies ten key factors behind Korea’s rapid growth from the 1960s to the 1990s and examines pressing socioeconomic issues, including population aging, declining fertility, high suicide rates, political and economic polarization, early retirement, youth unemployment, and the expansion of private education. The book also analyzes deep inequalities within Korea’s labor market, such as persistent gender wage gaps, disparities between large conglomerates and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the divide between regular and non-regular employment, and the heavy reliance on self-employment. Finally, it addresses critical economic policy challenges, including rising household debt, real estate bubbles, minimum wage debates, inflation, an underdeveloped service sector, an undervalued stock market, inefficiencies in public enterprises and mutual financial cooperatives, a lagging tourism industry, the search for new growth engines, carbon neutrality commitments, and an outdated tax system. Offering fresh insights and concrete policy recommendations, the book highlights both the achievements and the vulnerabilities of Korea’s economic model.Se-Young Bae
is Professor Emeritus of Finance at Konyang University in Nonsan, South Korea, and earned his B.A. from the George Washington University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. His research focuses on productivity and efficiency measurement, labor market dynamics, and empirical analyses of causality and correlation across various industries and countries. He has received the Best Teaching Award three times and served as Dean of the College of Business and Public Administration at Konyang University.

South Korea’s Dilemma: Prosperity, Inequality, and the Road Ahead

This open access book demonstrates that in a large and diverse country like Indonesia, sustained national growth is difficult to achieve without accelerating the growth of its lagging regions. Conventional economic prescriptions-monetary and fiscal stimulus, trade liberalization, and deregulation of the real sector-are insufficient on their own. When national growth rises because lagging regions catch up, the result is an inclusive growth trajectory. Yet even this is not enough. Higher output does not automatically translate into improved human welfare across regions. A welfare indicator such as the Human Capital Index (HCI) offers a far more meaningful measure than GDP because it captures both the current and future productivity of people. Ultimately, development is not defined by what a country produces, but by what its people become. Using a spatial modeling framework and panel data, the book identifies the key determinants of regional HCI-education, stunting rates, and the dominance of the mining sector. It further argues that because the majority of Indonesian workers are concentrated in the low productivity retail trade sector, any policy seeking to raise welfare at scale must begin by improving productivity in this sector. This is not a peripheral concern; it is a central condition for broad based welfare gains, with the potential to transform the ordinary backbone of the economy into an engine of shared human advancement.

Bridging Distances Through People-First Human Capital

The Quiet Engine of Growth

'A wonderful subject, beautifully written, evoking a world startlingly like and unlike our own' Rory Stewart 'A brilliant portrait not just of a great and unjustly forgotten man, but of an entire age' William Dalrymple 'Important reading at any time in history; essential in the world of today' Peter Frankopan IN THE EARLY 1960S, a peaceful world seemed possible. The still young United Nations was regarded as humankind's best hope for ending war. African and Asian nations, having recently won their freedom from colonial rule, sought influence on the world stage. At the helm of their international efforts was Secretary-General U Thant, a practising Buddhist and former schoolteacher from Burma. In Peacemaker, acclaimed historian Thant Myint-U traces his grandfather's integral yet forgotten roles in some of the twentieth century's most critical crises: from battling white supremacist mercenaries in the Congo and mediating an end to the Cuban Missile Crisis to desperately trying to prevent the 1967 Six Day War. Drawing on newly declassified documents, he traces U Thant's tireless efforts to bring peace to Vietnam, create a fairer international economy, safeguard the environment, and avoid a third world war. A testament to the power of hope and individual action in times of uncertainty, Peacemaker is an extraordinary chronicle of a golden age of diplomacy - and vital to a fresh understanding of our world today.

South Asian Public Administration

Elite Capture in Asia, drawing on experiences of eight Asian countries, explores the functioning of power in practice to demonstrate how public policy across South and Southeast Asia is influenced, directed, and often subverted by elites whose interests diverge from the broader public good. The book also makes efforts to venture beyond the state of elite capture to explore instances of resistance, reform, and potential for addressing the problem. Researchers in political economy, public policy, and development, policymakers and practitioners, students and engaged citizens can benefit from the empirical studies used in the book. This volume does not offer a single model or universal solution. Instead, it advances a shared analytical lens for understanding the extent of the challenge of policy capture and its consequences. The book aims to contribute to ongoing debates about governance in South and Southeast Asia.

New Perspectives on Chinese Politics and Society

This book develops a conceptual and analytical framework for understanding persistent regional divergence in innovation performance. Instead of treating inequality as a measurable outcome, this book introduces the concept of structural asymmetry as an underlying mechanism embedded in knowledge capacity, institutional coordination, and opportunity structures. This book seeks to move beyond descriptive cluster studies and fragmented empirical cases by offering a transferable theoretical architecture that can be applied across national contexts. This book also examines how contemporary global transitions—such as digitalization, demographic change, and climate transformation—interact with pre-existing regional structures. By linking long-term divergence with institutional governance and emerging technological shifts, this book aims to provide both theoretical depth and policy relevance for scholars, graduate students, and practitioners concerned with regional innovation and structural transformation.Chen Qi
is an associate professor at Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance. Her research focuses on regional innovation systems, industrial economics, and structural transformation. She has published widely on China’s regional innovation patterns, governance structures, and industrial upgrading trajectories. In this book, she developed the core theoretical framework and analytical architecture and led the conceptual design and integration of the structural asymmetry approach based on qualitative materials, including policy documents, secondary data, and expert interviews.
Liu Chenyu
holds a Master’s degree from a UK university and previously worked in auditing and financial analysis at Ernst & Young Huaming LLP. Her background in accounting, finance, and applied economic analysis contributes to the empirical and qualitative analysis of the book.

Theory and Applications from China

A Framework for Asymmetric Regional Innovation

This book presents an innovative economic theory that successfully integrates the "effective market" and the "capable government" into a unified model. Moving beyond the traditional view of market versus state, it demonstrates how these forces can work together organically, drawing key insights from China's economic development story. The work constructs a comprehensive rational synthesis model, assigning balanced weight to both market mechanisms and government action. It establishes corresponding macroeconomic goals and policy frameworks. Building on this foundation, the book offers a unified analysis of economic growth theory and identifies the optimal balance point between government intervention and market freedom. Ultimately, this groundbreaking contribution, rooted in China's successful practice, offers a vital new perspective for understanding modern economies. It positions China's economic model and theory for greater global influence, contributing fresh pathways for development within today's rapidly changing world and the pursuit of a shared future for mankind.
