This book presents a unique study of the field of comparative law examining the key differences between schools and approaches and examining their contradictions.

Comparative law is depicted in this book as a field of contrarians, jurists who tend to oppose or reject prevailing opinions or established practices. Contrarianism has made it exceedingly difficult to find one's way in the field where there are drastically varying views on the basic issues.

The book guides readers through divisive debates and disagreements and helps to draw useful conclusions. Instead of lamenting comparative law's feeble place in the legal academia or to fantasise about the supposed great future of a unified discipline, the book highlights the collisions and tracks their influence on the field. By focusing on tensions underlying the field this book encourages readers to think critically while studying law comparatively.

Palgrave Studies in Prisons and Penology

This book explores the path dependencies that have shaped the prison systems of the former communist countries of Europe following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Reflecting the varied ethno-religious populations of the region, the collection details how ethnic minority prisoners were managed under different communist regimes and how this changed after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In chapters written by authors from fifteen countries, it explores past and present aspects of penal governance, gang culture, Council of Europe leverage, geopolitics and prisoner experiences. The authors are drawn from across the disciplines of anthropology, criminology, geography, history, modern languages and literature, and sociology. The collection shines a light on prison systems that are often overlooked in discussions of European penalty. It addresses the question of whether ‘post-communist’ is an appropriate label to attach to these prison systems and, in line with the current imperative to decentre Russian and East European area studies, it brings together research from a diverse range of the former communist states of Europe. This book will be of interest to criminologists, historians, and social scientists and a general readership interested in Russia, and the countries of East Central Europe and the Balkans.Brendan Humphreys
is a senior researcher and an Associate Professor of East European studies at the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki, Finland. He has co-edited two collections on Russian modernization and international relations, and published widely on the history and politics of the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
Judith Pallot
is Professor Emerita at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, where she taught for forty years. In 2018, she was awarded a European Research Council Advanced Grant to research ethnicity in the prison systems of the former communist countries in Europe, which she took to the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki. She is the author of numerous books and articles on USSR and the Russian Federation.

Big Think's Best Science Book of 2024 A theoretical physicist takes readers on an awe-inspiring journey to discover how the universe generates everything from nothing at all. "If you want to know what's really going on in the realms of relativity and particle physics, read this book" —Sean Carroll, bestselling author of The Biggest Ideas in the Universe In Waves in an Impossible Sea, physicist Matt Strassler tells a startling tale of elementary particles, human experience, and empty space. He begins with a simple mystery of motion—our planet hurtles through the cosmos at 150 miles per second, and yet we feel nothing of it. How can our voyage be so tranquil? The reason, Strassler reveals, is that empty space is a sea, albeit a paradoxical one. Much like water and air, it ripples in various ways, and we ourselves, made from its ripples, can move through space as effortlessly as waves crossing an ocean. Deftly weaving together daily experience and fundamental physics—the musical universe, the enigmatic quantum, cosmic fields, and the Higgs boson—Strassler shows us how all things, familiar and unfamiliar, emerge from what seems like nothing at all. Accessible and profound, Waves in an Impossible Sea is the ultimate guide to our place in the universe.

Palgrave Studies in Economic History

This book explains how ideology can be better integrated into economic history analysis, arguing that if economists and economic historians are to fully understand economic behaviour a much deeper appreciation of ideological processes is required. The book has two parts. The first part presents a comprehensive theory of ideology and ideological change that can be easily incorporated into economic analysis; the second provides an empirical case study of ideological change from East Germany of the 1960s.
The book demonstrates how current restrictive views of ideology found within mainstream economics can be enhanced by adopting a more expansive, multidisciplinary understanding of ideology and its role in the processes of economic change. Merging a view of ideology as a fluid and politically practical concept with the framework of change offered by institutional economics, the authors use this theory to provide an in-depth analysis of how the ideological case for the New Economic System in East Germany and for de-Stalinisation more generally in the 1960s was built. Rich in archival material, the book both deepens our understanding of economic change in the communist world in the post-Stalin era and demonstrates the multifaceted role of ideology in economic decision making. With a cutting-edge approach, this book will be a valuable resource for students of economics, economic history, political economy, as well as of communist and German history.
Gary B. Magee is a Professor of Economics at Monash University, a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and a Fellow of Royal Historical Society in the United Kingdom. He has published widely in the fields of economic history, history, and historical political economy.
Wayne Geerling is a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. His expertise lies in German economic history and economics education. He has published widely in leading peer-reviewed journals in the fields of economics, economic history, and history. He is the author (with Gary B. Magee) of Socialism with a Human Face: Using Behavioural Economics to Understand East German Economic History (2022).

Restraining Power examines the ethical and strategic dilemmas of sovereign coexistence. Excavating a forgotten tradition of the "law of nature and nations" intended to restrain the violent impulses of states, David C. Hendrickson shows how this perspective emphasizes respect for the rights of other nations. It provides an essential bulwark of peace in an anarchic world. All states, Hendrickson argues, have an interest in observing the principles of reciprocity, justice, and good faith, but few have violated them more than the United States. In neglecting these principles, US foreign policy has entered a destabilizing shadow world in which force and fraud are normalized. At once rigorous and elegantly written, Restraining Power is essential reading for students and scholars of international relations, political philosophy, and history who want to rethink the moral and prudential boundaries of power in global affairs.
