This book presents a vivid and close-up view of social science researchers engaged in fieldwork, in discussions with colleagues, and in writing. Adopting an ethnographic approach inspired by ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, the author pursues a praxeological analysis of social inquiry in situ. By conceiving of analytical practices such as observation, shop talk, and conceptualization in experiential terms, the seen but unnoticed structures of knowledge work are exposed and made available for empirical analysis.

In a departure from ethnographic studies of research that focus on the physical sciences, the author uses the example of sociological research to shed new light on the role of self and mind for epistemic cultures, on the elusive materiality of conceptual objects, and on researchers' experiential ways of seizing, reviewing, and accrediting knowledge.

This book revisits the arguments by which Harvey Sacks and Harold Garfinkel opposed the widespread attempt in the social sciences to construct disciplinary theories and methods in place of common-sense knowledge of human action, and proposed instead an alternative that would investigate the organised methods of natural language use and common-sense reasoning that constitute social orders - arguments that led to the establishment and proliferation of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. 

As the very "constructive analysis" that they opposed has begun to be incorporated into influential lines of research in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, the authors return to the founding insights of the field and reiterate the importance of Garfinkel and Sacks' original and controversial proposals for an "alternate" sociology of practical action and practical reasoning. Showing how constructive analysis has become entrenched in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis and arguing for a need to "re-boot" these approaches, this volume constitutes a call for a renewal of the radical alternative proposed by Garfinkel and Sacks.

This book is devoted to the reintroduction of the remarkable approach to sociological inquiry developed by Harvey Sacks. Sacks's original analyses - concerned with the lived detail of action and language-in-interaction, discoverable in members' actual activities - demonstrated a means of doing sociology that had previously seemed impossible. In so doing, Sacks provided for highly technical, detailed, yet stunningly simple solutions to some of the most trenchant troubles for the social sciences relating to language, culture, meaning, knowledge, action, and social organisation. In this original collection, scholars working in a range of different fields, including sociology, human geography, communication and media studies, social psychology, and linguistics, outline the ways in which their work has been inspired, influenced, and shaped by Sacks's approach, as well as how their current research is taking Sacks's legacy forward in new directions. As such, the collection is intended to provide both an introduction to, and critical exploration of, the work of Harvey Sacks and its continued relevance for the analysis of contemporary society.

This volume includes an unpublished manuscript and selected portions of five seminars by Harold Garfinkel - the founder of ethnomethodology - on the topic of practices in the natural sciences and mathematics. The volume provides a coherent and sustained account of his program for the study of ordinary and specialized social actions. Presenting broader theoretical and methodological initiatives, as well as discussions and summaries of exemplary studies of social phenomena within and beyond the sciences, this work dates to the period in the 1980s during which the field of Science and Technology Studies was taking shape, with ethnomethodological studies of scientific practice forming a major part of its development at the time. Aside from their historical importance, the manuscript and seminars present a distinctive perspective on the natural and social sciences that remains highly original and pertinent to research on science, social science, and everyday life today. Offering critical insights and proposals relating to developments in Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis, this volume will appeal to scholars of Sociology and Science and Technology Studies with interests in the work of Garfinkel.

Harold Garfinkel: Studies of Work in the Sciences

The 2nd edition of Murder, Medicine and Motherhood presents a fresh examination of the case of Kathleen Folbigg and a critical evaluation of the process that led to her exoneration in 2023. 

In 2011, the 2nd edition of this influential work argued that Kathleen Folbigg was wrongly convicted of killing her 4 children. The book attracted scholarly and public attention and led to medical and legal reviews of the Folbigg children's deaths. 

Two subsequent inquiries examined Folbigg's convictions. In 2019, Commissioner Blanch concluded that Folbigg's guilt was "even more certain" than it had been at trial. His report provoked an unprecedented response from the Australian Academy of Science, highlighting a rift between the legal and scientific establishments over how medical evidence should be managed. A petition signed by Nobel prize winners and others demanded a further review. The 2nd inquiry, completed in 2023, adopted a markedly different approach to scientific and behavioural evidence. Commissioner Bathurst ultimately reached the "firm view" that "reasonable doubt exists as to Folbigg's guilt." 

This new edition extends the examination of the legal process, medical evidence, and normative expectations of motherhood. It evaluates law's fact-finding processes and the legal system's adherence to the principles of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, and raises concerns about how legal actors work with scientific uncertainty and assess women's credibility and demeanour.

It argues that objects are better seen as things coming apart, as en route to becoming something else, some stuff else, somewhere else. It locates these arguments in economies of demolition, disposal and reincarnation, focusing on object death, materials recovery and re-fabrication, and the sequestration and unleashing of materials classified as wastes.

Military Harms and the Harms of Militarism

Governments around the world are privatizing everything, with dramatic but largely ignored negative consequences for human rights. This open access book outlines the response that is urgently needed. Corporations are being given control over water, healthcare, housing, public transportation, child welfare services, aged care, and much else. Privatization is promoted by international financial institutions, consulting firms, and development actors as the answer to public finances devastated by the very tax cuts insistently pushed by these groups. Their pitch is based upon a mythology that extols the virtues of an idealized market while ignoring the heavy human rights costs incurred. Building on the latest evidence and on specially commissioned case studies, this book shows how the touted 'efficiency' of the private sector is often predicated on higher charges and/or reduced services, destructive employment practices, and the highly predictable exclusion of many users. Privatization generally costs states more money, marginalizes democratic decision-making, and transforms citizens from rights-holders into customers while sidelining accountability. The authors develop an approach designed to enable human rights actors, including courts, UN treaty monitoring bodies, and NGOs to move beyond their longstanding agnosticism towards privatization. It starts with a presumption that privatization is inherently retrogressive in human rights terms. Whatever mix of public and private is reflected in any given arrangement, governments must retain the degree of control necessary to ensure respect for rights, and the legal, financial and administrative ability to do so. The book charts a new direction for responding to the ever-growing threat that privatization poses to human rights.
