While Tÿbingen theologian Eberhard Jÿngel's theology remains broadly influential in Continental Europe, his work has largely been overlooked by Anglo-American readers interested in modern Protestantism. There are, however, signs that this trend is changing, as several dissertations, specialist monographs, and popular blog-sites have appeared recently that are devoted to Jÿngel's thought. There is thus a growing audience for the proposed study, which will be the first up-to-date, English-language, general introduction to Jÿngel's theology to appear in three decades. Nelson offers an interpretation of Jÿngel's theology that is unique.

Commonly known as Dalits, or Untouchables, Paraiyar Christians are a large socially marginalised group living in India within a dynamic and complex social matrix dominated by the caste system. This book presents a detailed exploration of Paraiyar communities, focusing on their religious and cultural identity and examining their worldview within the dominant 'Hindu' religious worldview. Exploring Dalits' wider social context and boundaries, ascribed and achieved identity, and the use of religious symbolism and ritual, this book highlights various tensions and areas of creativity among Paraiyar Christians and how they negotiate their lives within a hierarchical system. Anderson Jeremiah argues that the category 'religion' is inadequate, and he sheds light on the complexity of religious belief in marginalised indigenous communities. This inter-disciplinary, socio-ethonographic study of Dalit Christian community presents a significant anthropological study of Christianity as it is lived out in the grass roots of a marginalised society.

Explorations in Practical, Pastoral and Empirical Theology

Theological reflection lies at the heart of practical theology. There is an increasingly robust collection of literature focusing on it. However, little attention has been given to what reflection is or what it looks like when practised 'theologically'. This gap may account for some of the ongoing uncertainty on the part of practitioners of every sort: those engaged in ministry, teachers and students of practical theology, and 'every day' Christians aspiring to make meaning of their experience in a way that is faithful to the Christian tradition. This book provides an exploration of theological reflection from a foundation of adult education in general and experiential learning theory in particular. Reflection as a way of making meaning from experience is integral to experiential learning theory and the book argues that reflection and learning have a symbiotic relationship. Reflection should therefore be understood and its processes examined from this perspective. The early chapters provide the important educational foundations. Literature on theological reflection is then scrutinised through this lens, before the findings of an empirical study are presented which reveal how individuals went about reflecting theologically in an educational context. The analysis of both theory and empirical data allows a range of pointers to emerge about what theological reflection looks like in practice and what features influence the procedures adopted. Two penultimate chapters are provided by academic practitioners who respond to the overall discussion by reflecting on the implications for their practice. The final chapter draws the threads together and indicates how the volume has contributed to practical theology's understanding of theological reflection in general.

International development has risen dramatically up both the political agenda in recent years. As the utopian myth of a global free market underpinned by the relentless spread of liberal democracy perishes in Iraq or is submerged under the floods brought on by climate change, politicians and churches pin more and more of their hopes for the world on international development. Proceeding from the premise that the 'work of political theology is to shed light from the Christian faith upon the intricate challenge of thinking about living in late-modern Western society' (O'Donovan) this book aims to understand the aspirations, purposes and practices of international development from the perspective and commitments of Christian faith. It aims to educate Christians and citizens in the practical reasonableness required for international development, based upon a recovery of traditional practices of charity.

This book provides an introduction to the cultural and intellectual exchanges and conflicts between Islam and Christianity since the seventh century. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the rich history of active cultural contact between Islam and Christianity in Europe and the Middle East, despite periods of conflict since the Arab Conquest of Byzantium. The book highlights the positive traditions of cultural and political partnership that resulted in the exchange of vital religious and philosophical ideas and values. Such partnerships not only introduced the Arabs to the great monuments of Greek philosophy, science and medicine, but also ensured the cultural recurrence of Greek culture, culminating in the Latin Renaissance of the fourteenth and fifteenth century.

The book seeks to move forward debates on postsecularity as conceived by Habermas et.al. which recognise that, contrary to secular expectations, religion persists. The study is unique in exploring the irruptions (external breakthroughs) that unsettle secularisation and which give rise to postsecularisation. This shift has rendered sociology vulnerable to some unexpected theological considerations, some of which are explored in the study. Topics considered in the study, which make it accessible, include: dilemmas of naming; emotions and the visual; martyrdom and theodicy. Each of these has irruptive properties that force sociology to reconsider its theological debts. Postsecularity has become a fashionable term, but one which needs to be fleshed out and this study grasps a moment of opportunity to do so, which renders it original.
