This book reveals how the formation of the Chinese socialist system in the 1950s dramatically transformed the nation’s economy, and charts how the newly established economic system functioned during the planned economy period (1949-1978), through focusing on Shanghai, which had served as the center of China’s modern economy since the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing on the rich historical primary sources of the Shanghai Municipal Archives, this study examines the impact of the institutional change wrought by the introduction of the socialist system on Shanghai’s economy, through a careful comparison with the economic structure before 1949. Moreover, it also explores the distinctive features of the Chinese socialist system, first and foremost the relationship between local governments and local businesses that came about through the socialist transformation of private enterprise, by analyzing Shanghai’s fiscal structure and a series of key industries, including the textile, machinery, rubber processing, cement, and power industries. This historical study proffers a new understanding of the long-term economic history of modern China across the pivotal 1949 and 1978 divides and sheds light on the origin of what has come to be known as "socialism with Chinese characteristics" today.

The rules-based international economic order is undergoing profound transformation. Geopolitical risk and geoeconomic strategy are no longer external shocks to a stable system; they now shape the core of international economic law (IEL), influencing trade regulation, investment protection, digital governance, and supply-chain design. Tariffs, sanctions, investment screening, data controls, and security-driven regulation have become structural features of the global economy.
This edited volume originates from the 9th Asian International Economic Law Network (AIELN) Conference, held in Tokyo in June 2025 under the theme “Geopolitical Risks and Geoeconomics in International Economic Law: Asian Perspectives and Beyond.” It brings together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to examine how IEL is responding to persistent geopolitical uncertainty and regulatory risk.
The chapters analyze how legal frameworks allocate the costs of geopolitical and regulatory risk, whether the liberal trading system is fragmenting into regional or minilateral arrangements, and how security, resilience, and sustainability are reshaping market access and investment governance. A central question is whether international economic law can adapt to these pressures without abandoning rule-based multilateralism.

By analyzing factors such as exchange rates, industrial structure, internal migration, and the labor market, and in part comparing them with those of the U.S. economy, it offers new insights into the significant structural transformations that have occurred in the Japanese economy. It particularly highlights the different performance between the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors as a cause of the prolonged stagnation. The asset price bubble of the 1980s and the strong yen in the 1990s altered the employment structure of the export-driven manufacturing sector, drawing laborers to the service sector. The resulting allocation of resources to the low-productivity service sector has delayed economic recovery. It also discusses problems of an excess concentration in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. This book not only identifies structural change in the Japanese economy but also provides a practical framework for a differential productivity economic growth model. The studies offer a fresh understanding of Japan’s economic transformation, with implications that can be directly applied to real-world economic scenarios, making it a valuable resource for economists, researchers, policymakers, and anyone interested in the dynamics of the Japanese economy.

International trade and public health have long been in tension, with intellectual property law partially to blame. Patent protections have created strong pharmaceutical monopolies, making medicines unaffordable in many countries, blocking access to healthcare, and disrupting global supply chains. Attempts to remedy these public health failures have largely been fractured, with stop-gap efforts failing to meaningfully resolve the structural issues at the intersection between access, innovation, and regulation. Rather than treating these areas as separate domains, this book advocates for a holistic regulatory approach that centers public health while recognizing the deep interconnections with IP and trade. The authors argue that advancing innovation and global development requires recalibrating legal and policy frameworks to prioritize global public health as a necessary foundational requirement for robust trade and development. This book details the temporal transformations in modernity as they have manifested in social structures and relationships. Globalization has created a new reality in the image of the new-age truth—the reality of pluralism which has transformed the way human relations have been organized. There has been a surge of new values and new ideas. All these have collectively formed a new consciousness.
