A Hegelian Theory of Divine Revelation

Bloomsbury Philosophy Dictionaries

While his work speaks very powerfully to the contemporary age, the language of Emmanuel Levinas can seem difficult to approach. This dictionary gives you access to terms he used to build his overall argument, including those he employed idiosyncratically and invented. The dictionary also includes terms from phenomenology to which he gave new meanings, and which focused his critique of Western philosophy. The Levinas Dictionary also makes the work of this central figure in 20th-century philosophy more easily readable in translation by including the original French words he used. Each term explored belongs to one or more of three periods of the work he regarded as properly philosophical: 1) pre-1940; 2) 1940-1960, including the writing of his magnum opus Totality and Infinity and 3) 1960-1995, including his second great work, Otherwise than Being. Entries show how the terms appear, develop, or mutate over the course of his work in the phenomenology of radical ethics. Including an intellectual biography and a chronology of Levinas' life and work, a list of primary sources in French and English, as well as secondary sources and a glossary, The Levinas Dictionary will provide a broad and far-reaching introduction to a thinker whose work has only become more relevant to contemporary theory and practice.

Das Werk Søren Kierkegaards (1813-1855) vergegenwärtigt in einzigartiger und exemplarischer Weise den Problemhorizont von Religiosität und säkularer Moderne, der seit der Wende zum 19. Jahrhundert die europäische Geistesgeschichte bestimmt. Genauer noch zeigt sich Kierkegaards Eigenart im Ringen um die Entsprechung von Denken, Sprache und Handeln, auf die nach seiner Redlichkeitsforderung alles ankommt. Die Konsequenz, mit der Kierkegaard diese Problematik theoretisch entfaltet und praktisch austrägt, hat seine Ausnahmestellung unter den intellektuellen Wegbegleitern der Moderne begründet und ihn zu einem wichtigen Gesprächspartner der Postmoderne gemacht, dessen Aktualität eher noch zunimmt. Das Handbuch setzt mit Kapiteln zu wesentlichen Aspekten des Gesamtwerks ein, wie etwa Kierkegaards antipersuasiver Rhetorik, um dann vor diesem Hintergrund seine Werke darzustellen. Is there a human nature? Can knowledge of it help us live better lives? This book synthesises ancient and modern philosophical ideas and draws on scientific research to answer yes to both these questions. It develops an innovative normative theory on the basis of commonsensical, naturalistic, premisses; and it defends an Aristotelian normative theory -- whereby we should understand human goods as realisations or perfections of human nature -- against both traditional and emerging challenges to perfectionist ethics, including evolutionary biology and transhumanism. The result is a ground-breaking theory of 'natural perfectionism', which both returns perfectionistic ethics to its Aristotelian roots and shows how this is compatible with evolutionary biology and cognitive science. At a time when the very idea of human nature is viewed as something that can be readily transcended, this work recalls us to a realistic, sober and better-founded vision of it.

The Cause of the foundation of schools, which has been written around 600 by the East Syriac author Barhadbeshabba, is practically unique in intellectual history by explaining the anthropological phenomenon of schools. The author, who was himself a teacher at the famous School of Nisibis in Upper Mesopotamia, describes the history of divine and human schools until his own lifetime by renarrating important parts of biblical history as forms of teachings, paying attention to the Greek philosophical tradition and the teachings of Persian Zoroastrianism. He introduces his work by a sketch of his own philosophical convictions regarding our knowledge of God, the necessity of logic and the status of our soul. Due to its diverse contents, the work finds since a long time the interest not only of specalists of Eastern Christianity, but also of ancient historians, of historians of philosophy and of researchers in the field of religion, esp. Coranic and Zorostrian Studies. A new critical edition of this important text is been for a long time a desideratum, because the first editor Addai Scher could not use all extant manuscripts. For this reason, the text is re-edited here with introduction, translation and notes, using four extant manuscripts as well as the documentation of three, last one’s given by Addai Scher in its 1907 edition. The introduction describes the manuscripts and their relationship as well as the circumstances of the text’s composition. Thus, this new edition will be an indispensable tool for anybody working in the field of intellectual history of the Near East immediately before the rise of Islam.
