This open access book explores the political utility and consequences of memory laws with a focus on how militant memory laws frame, underpin and generate international conflicts. Proceeding from Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, this examination plots how memory laws have preceded, partially led to, and encouraged the outbreak of the war itself via Russian propaganda. It also offers a broader perspective looking at developments in the Baltic States, Belarus, Finland, Germany, Hungary, and Poland, as well as in European (Council of Europe and European Union) law. Bringing together scholars with diverse perspectives, this book provides both analysis and conceptual reflection for scholars assessing the politics of memory laws. The problem is not a new one, first recognised by Sir Frederick Pollock, but it has persisted over the intervening years. So though the question is a longstanding one, the answer provided by the book is truly innovative. It adopts a 'law in context' methodology to offer solutions. The new methodological approach is combined with insights from global regulatory theory and cutting edge solutions such as private collectivised proceedings and remedies, streamlined adjudication, and administrative enforcement systems. It takes a global approach, looking at models in the US, Canada, the UK, and the EU. As the use of boilerplates is set only to increase as privatisation and globalisation spread, the answers provided by this book are much needed.

More than four hundred years have passed since the Statute of Charitable Uses of 1601, whose Preamble set out a list of charitable purposes which has formed the basis of the modern legal definition of charity. This book explores the substantial body of judge-made rules and principles developed since then, highlighting a carefully curated selection of the landmark cases which have shaped charity law. Each chapter analyses one or more judicial decisions, setting them in their historical context, explaining their contemporary importance, and considering their future relevance.
