The Fleury Playbook has been justly celebrated as the most comprehensive extant collection of medieval music-dramas, containing in a single manuscript examples of non-biblical miracle plays, and settings of the Nativity and Resurrection stories, together with accounts of the conversion of Paul and Mary Magdalene. In this the first full-length monograph on the Playbook, Wyndham Thomas places the collection in its historical, cultural and musical context. Each of the 10 plays is treated to a close dramatic and musical analysis and placed in its broader context of musical life in the twelfth century.

2018 will mark the 800th anniversary of the consecration of the Abbey of St BenoÃ®t-sur-Loire - or Fleury Abbey - the previous home and namesake of the Fleury Playbook, a collection of 10 medieval music-dramas that has long held been a source of fascination, and not a little perplexity, for scholars in a variety of disciplines: history, music history, literary studies, art history in particular. The Fleury Playbook has been justly celebrated as the most comprehensive extant collection of medieval music-dramas, containing in a single manuscript examples of non-biblical miracle plays, and settings of the Nativity and Resurrection stories, together with accounts of the conversion of Paul and Mary Magdalene.  In this the first full-length monograph on the Playbook, Wyndham Thomas places the collection in its historical, cultural and musical context. The first three chapters introduce and then explore the issues raised by the collection: following an introduction, chapter 2 is devoted to the history and traditions of the Abbey, making a persuasive argument for that institution as the original home of the collection, and perhaps the venue in which the plays were first performed. Chapter 3 discusses medieval saints’ cults, placing the dramas, and particularly the four devoted to St Nicholas, in this context. The remaining chapters are devoted to a close musical and dramatic analysis of the 10 plays themselves.

An exploration of the relationship between early modern travel literature and English nationalism, this book's primary goal is to assess the response of early modern readers to the nationalist sentiments in Richard Hakluyt's Principal Navigations. Matthew Day contends that Hakluyt's collection shaped nationalist thinking, ideas, and notions of identity; and that it influenced nationalist policies and actions in a number of key areas, including politics, navigation, exploration and trade.

Early Modern Travel and the Discourses of English Nationalism

This book is the first to investigate early Roman religion on the basis of archaeological evidence. Author Elizabeth Colantoni uses the archaeological data to construct a new narrative about early Roman religious practices, examining the role and nature of sacred space; the religious calendar; gods, priests and worshippers; ritual and sacrifice; and death rites and ancestor cult in early Rome. The result is a fuller and more accurate picture of changing early Roman religious practices that also provides the basis for a better understanding of the more widely attested religion of the Romans who lived during the period of the Roman republic and after.

The religion of the people of Rome in the first centuries of the city’s history has long been a topic of interest for scholars, but it has been investigated primarily through literary evidence recorded in the first century BC and later, many centuries after an urban community first began to develop in Rome in the eighth century BC. The contemporary archaeological data from the eighth, seventh, and sixth centuries BC have been taken into account only sporadically, with the result that most scholarship supposedly focused on early Roman religion instead reproduces later Roman ideas about the origins and development of Roman religion—ideas that were often colored by the standards and principles of later Romans, supported by their own conjecture rather than by factual evidence. A standard scholarly method of dealing with the later written evidence about early Roman religious practices is to attempt to strip away any later or false information in order to isolate the genuine characteristics of early Roman religion. This teleological approach, however, causes early Roman religion to seem destined from the beginning to result in the later version of Roman religion. The only changes over time that can then be identified are those that show early Roman religion moving toward the model of the better known Roman religion of the first century BC and after. This book is the first to investigate early Roman religion on the basis of archaeological evidence.The earliest archaeological levels of Rome have been excavated in a number of areas around the city but, because of disciplinary divides between Classical studies, ancient history, religious studies, and archaeology, the archaeological evidence has not been incorporated in any significant way into discussions about the religion of the first Romans. And yet archaeological data can provide us with the baseline of factual evidence that is lacking in the later written sources and, in particular, the archaeological record allows the study of change through time in the characteristics of Roman religion in the earliest centuries of its existence. This book uses the archaeological data to construct a new narrative about early Roman religious practices, examining the role and nature of sacred space; the religious calendar; gods, priests and worshippers; ritual and sacrifice; and death rites and ancestor cult in early Rome as they can be understood through the archaeological evidence. The result is a fuller and more accurate picture of changing early Roman religious practices that also provides the basis for a better understanding of the more widely attested religion of the Romans who lived during the period of the Roman republic and after.

After considering the social changes that marked the end of the Later Bronze Age, it examines the environmental, economic, demographic and cultural factors that underpinned the emergence of the fragmented and regionalised societies of the Early Iron Age. The Mongol conquests of China in the thirteenth century have typically been seen as a disaster for the subject Chinese peoples, placing them under the yoke of an invader insensitive to Chinese cultural values, distrustful of Chinese influences and inept in government. This book assesses the Mongol achievements in China and re-considers their significance, arguing that the Mongols did not merely cause harm but also brought many benefits, not least bringing together nearly the whole of what was later referred to as ‘China’ and devising a system of government that, more or less successfully, held it together. It provides an account of the turbulent period immediately preceding the Mongol conquest of China, presenting evidence that strongly suggests the first use of gunpowder weapons in China. It goes on to examine the manner in which China was brought under Mongol rule, with particular focus on some of the major campaigns including the submission of the Uighur, the conquest of the Jin and Song empires, the campaigns in Dali, Yunnan and Korea, and the occupation of Tibet. Investigates the impact of Mongol rule, including the important lessons learned from ruling northern China and the later dynasties established by great Mongol rulers such as Khubilai Khan. Finally, it examines the reasons behind the collapse of the Mongol empire in China and the legacy left by Mongol rule.

The full texts of both 1680 editions of Elizabeth Cary's History of Edward II are here reproduced completely, along with an extensive introduction including biographical, cultural, and literary commentary on Elizabeth Cary, and also background on the debate surrounding the texts' authorship. This volume will be of interest to literary scholars working on Early Modern women as well as to historians and queer theorists, both of whom have made Edward II an important intellectual site in the last generation of scholarship.

The full texts of both 1680 editions of Elizabeth Cary's History of Edward II are here reproduced completely, along with an extensive introduction including biographical, cultural, and literary commentary on Elizabeth Cary, and also background on the debate surrounding the texts' authorship. In the recovery of women writers of early modern England, Elizabeth Tanfield Cary, Viscountess Falkland, has drawn substantial interest. Swan examines the post-publication history of both 1680 editions, revealing how the many hands at work in various subsequent editions have resulted in the obfuscation of the textual history, which has, in the past, led to the misattribution of the history to Henry Cary, Elizabeth's husband.  The reproduction of both versions allows scholars to easily compare the two, which is important in order to understand Cary's reworking of her text from early to late drafts. Both versions represent intentions and socially received states which are useful in presenting the text, in documenting Cary's changing attitudes and discursive strategies in the mid-1620's-the period of composition for all the manuscript states and a period of particular biographical significance-and in accounting for the more recent reception of the history.   Swan showcases here how Cary contributes significantly both to the development of resistance theory (essential to democratic-republican ideals at the root of Anglo-American politics and government), and to the development of non-fiction prose style in English. This volume will be of interest to literary scholars working on Early Modern women as well as to historians and queer theorists, both of whom have made Edward II an important intellectual site in the last generation of scholarship.
