This book was originally published in 1981 at a time when mass unemployment had returned to the United Kingdom. Now reissued with a new Preface by the author's literary executor, the essays in this volume discuss in detail the damage that was being done to the community and the economy at national and regional levels as a result of government policy. There are chapters on the political and economic aspects of the problem, on the comparison with the inter-war years, on youth unemployment and on unemployment in each of the regions worst affected. The collection as a whole provides an authoritative overview of a central political issue of the late 20th Century but one which still has resonance today as the post-Covid, post-Brexit UK economy teeters on the edge of recession.

A History of Youth Justice

A practitioners' text providing a summary of the law as it relates to insurance claims, largely, but not exclusively, addressing claims against insurers and insurance brokers specifically aimed at those involved in the application of the law on a daily basis, whether as solicitors, barristers or insurance claims handlers. 

Explaining the meaning of terms and concepts in plain English making it accessible to lawyers and non-lawyers alike, the 5th edition is fully revised and updated taking account of all significant new case law, including those being appealed to the Court of Appeal.

In addition to important insurance case law caused by the Covid 19 pandemic ,eg Rockliffe Hall v Travelers Insurance Co Ltd, Stonebridge Pub Company v MS Amlin, Various Eateries Trading Ltd v Allianz, and Greggs plc v Zurich, where a range of issues have been decided, other significant cases analysed in the 5th edition in detail include:

- Berkshire Assets v AXA in relation to avoidance for breach of the duty of fair presentation under the Insurance Act 2015
- Quadra Commodities SA v XL Insurance Company SE in relation damages for late payment of insurance claims under s.13A of the Insurance Act 2015
- Jones v Zurich in relation to avoidance of an insurance policy under the Consumer (Insurance and Disclosure) Act 2012

In addition Chapter 17, Specific Types of Insurance , is expanded to include a new section on cyber insurance.

This book examines the constitutional treatment of national security in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. These four states share their Commonwealth heritage and are members, alongside the USA, of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. The book takes a comparative approach to the institutions through which, and tools with which, these four states seek to protect their national security against the threats of both terrorism and hostile state activity and how they have evolved over time. It identifies and examines the various specialised institutions, inside and outside of legislatures, which have grown up to oversee the exercise of public power for national security purposes while maintaining the required secrecy. This book provides an overview of male violence against women and the failure of the legal system. Male violence against women is pervasive. From the bedroom to the boardroom; from the home to the hospital; from the court to the care home, women are subject to male violence. The legal response to this is weak. The violence is either invisible or downplayed. This book explains why and how the law can do better. It explores how violence in different settings reinforces and magnifies the abuse in others. Too often violence against women is considered in silos (sexual assault; domestic abuse; street harassment, etc.). The book argues that they must be seen on a continuum. It brings out the common themes, but also the subtle differences in context between the scenes of violence. In doing so it argues that we cannot understand an incident of male violence against women without understanding the broader context within which that takes place. The book claims that the legal response to male violence against women downplays the severity of the harm or even fails to recognise it. This is a must-read for those interested in criminal law, gender politics, and feminist approaches to law. It is only when the true nature of the problem is grasped that the law can start to provide an effective response to it. This book shows how a better and more effective law can be found.
