What the Seasons of History Tell Us about How and When This Crisis Will End

The Fourth Turning Is Here

Blazing Light&nbsp;is&nbsp;published to coincide with Mimi Plumb’s first solo museum exhibition of the same name (High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia) and brings together three of her major bodies of work—The White Sky, Landfall and The Golden City,&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Reservoir—that collectively contemplate the anxieties of American life in the waning years of the Cold War and its aftermath. In the 1970s, Plumb began photographing as a teenager in the San Francisco suburb of Walnut Creek at a time marked by rapid development of the land coupled with global political and economic instability. Her early artistic life was defined by a burgeoning awareness of global warming, the AIDS epidemic, violent conflict in Latin America and the Middle East, and a looming threat of nuclear war. This atmosphere attuned Plumb to the evidence of such forces in the land, the built environment, and the ways people carry themselves and relate to one another—concerns that continue to abide in her work to this day. Plumb’s photographs foreground the presence of people, lending her images a greater degree of pathos and even notes of humorous absurdity. Though the artist embraces realism, her photographs are more ambient and enigmatic, inviting conjecture rather than providing documentary information. The publication will include texts by Gregory Harris, curator of the exhibition; Karen Irvine, chief curator and deputy director at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, IL; and Lauren Richman, curator of photography at the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL. Plumb's work is held in numerous public collections, including the High Museum of Art (GA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MA), Yale University Art Gallery (CT), and the Deutsche Börse Collection (Germany). The&nbsp;Mimi Plumb: Blazing Light&nbsp;exhibition will be on view at the High Museum of Art from February 6-May 5, 2026. The exhibition will then travel to the Johnson Museum at Cornell University, NY (summer 2026), the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, FL (winter 2026/2027), followed by the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, IL (spring 2027).

How contemporary artist Glenn Ligon’s expansive body of work mines American history and literature to ask critical questions about modern culture. OCTOBER Files: Glenn Ligon (b. 1960) presents the first compilation of critical discourse on the multimedia work of one of the most influential American artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Often citing or annotating past literary (e.g., James Baldwin), artistic (e.g., Andy Warhol), and musical (e.g., Steve Reich) interventions, Ligon’s practice imaginatively explores the contradictions of speech, vision, authorship, identity, blackness and belonging in works that are at once historically resonant and materially sensuous. Spanning Ligon’s emergence in the postmodern multicultural milieu of New York in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, his starring turns at Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and other international exhibitions of the 2000–10s, and his formative impact on both new and canonical art histories, this volume provides a comprehensive accounting of the questions central to his work in painting, sculpture, video, installation, and print. With texts by writers from Wayne Koestenbaum to Rizvana Bradley, this File not only plumbs the depths of Ligon’s oeuvre, but also models the various approaches to critical writing that have defined art and culture of the past 30 years.

The often-forgotten global story of how the Confederacy lost its bid for sovereign nationhood In 1861, proslavery secessionists severed ties with the United States, launched the Confederacy, and readied their new government to join the international community as a sovereign nation. In The First Pariah State, Robert Bonner tells the story of how a transatlantic publicity campaign dashed Confederate hopes by ostracizing its rebellion as an immoral, global menace. The international anti-Confederate campaign built on existing antislavery themes but moved far beyond them. Improvised indictments circulated secessionists’ most incendiary words across the world. The Union and its foreign allies condemned the marauding Southern navy for disrupting high-seas commerce, violating civilized norms, and preparing for the resumption of the African slave trade. Abraham Lincoln and Senator Charles Sumner sought to convert rhetorical barbs and maritime anxieties into novel doctrines of international law designed to counter rogue regimes. And Union opinion-makers, including Black abolitionists, worked with European supporters to stymie the South’s naval expansion, war finances, and diplomatic efforts to gain formal recognition. International worries about the Confederate rebellion waned after U.S. victory, and the Southern pariahdom of the 1860s left few enduring traces in international law or overseas remembrances. In fact, over the next century and a half, the pro-Confederate “Lost Cause” mythology proved to be as powerful abroad as it was within the restored United States.
