Founding Sins, Institutional Failures, and Expanding Democracy to Form a More Perfect Union

This book discusses the impact of international migrants and refugees in the Middle East in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, focusing on 3 main questions: What has the role of international migrants been in coping with Covid-19? How has this international health crisis affected international migrants and refugees? How has it affected socio-economic and political structures? The authors assess the relationship between healthcare, international migration and the pandemic through specific case-studies including: Türkiye, with reference to the case of Uzbek and Georgian migrant women, Türkiye with reference to Turkish citizens’ attitudes towards Syrian refugees, Palestinian camps in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and students’ and immigrant professors’ ethnographic experiences, the Arab Gulf countries and the Pakistan Medical Centre in Dubai, Arabia and the case-study of Oman, and Iran. The argument seeks to move beyond the idea of migrants as victims of the pandemic, and sheds light on the active role and agency of migrants to underline their substantive contribution to coping with the health crisis.
Gennaro Errichiello is a Global Fellow at Habib University (Karachi), specializing in South-South migration, particularly in the Gulf countries-Asia corridor. He has taught&nbsp; in the UK (Loughborough University and SOAS), and at Webster University in Tashkent. He has published widely, and presented at conferences.&nbsp;

Elena Maestri is Professor of History and Institutions of the Muslim World at the Catholic University (UCSC) in Milan. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Arab Gulf countries, with research on history, development, gender, and media. Her works include books and a great number of articles and book-chapters.

Annemarie Profanter is Associate Professor at the Free University of Bolzano. She has focused her research on intercultural pedagogy, women in the Gulf, polygyny, and Muslim migration in Europe. She has done fieldwork in Pakistan and the Arabian Peninsula and collaborates with academic and governmental institutions.

By engaging with the crises of democracy, capitalism, new media, modernity, relativism, intellectual life, and identity, sociology came to play a crucial orienting role within Weimar society.
The professional self-examination of modern society that this initiated continues to yield valuable insights into how social and historical processes unfold in modern societies. This book examines 'womanhood' and 'race' not only as disputed, converging, and constantly changing categories and lived experiences, but also as interrelated and unequal subjectivities and social realties that shaped all early-twentieth century Puerto Ricans. It empirically documents just how significantly 'womanhood' and 'race' were inextricably intertwined in Puerto Rico between 1914 and 1945, a decisive period in U.S. expansionism and in the transformation of this island. Through a comparative analysis and description of specific subjects in early-twentieth century Puerto Rico—mostly Puerto Ricans from different races and social classes, but also some North Americans as well—the book demonstrates the extent to which 'womanhood' and 'race' are a more thorny, volatile, and unstable than is commonly acknowledged within Women’s History and Caribbean Studies. This is the first book that examines the relationships between women in Puerto Rico from divergent social classes and racialized positions by mostly focusing on the socioeconomic and racial inequalities among colonized women in Puerto Rico. This is in marked contrast with most Women’s History globally which mainly concentrates either on the lives of elite women or, at best, on the unequal relationships between colonizer- and/or European-descended women vis-à-vis colonized- and/or non-white women. In this book 'womanhood' and 'race' are not seen as separate, nor as already given, historically and culturally immutable 'things.’ Those are some of the lacunae this book transcends, primarily in the case of white-Creole women relative to non-white Island women and the images socially constructed of them in Puerto Rico, as well as for racially located Puerto Ricans more broadly. Within this context, the book enables a different reading of already known documents while demonstrating the importance of examining unused or forgotten bibliographical sources, some of them previously untranslated.Gladys M.
