This book sheds new light on the complex relationship between criminal liability, sexuality and public health in the era of Aids. It analyses, in particular, the role of public health arguments, and the language of 'sexual rights', in legal struggles aimed at decriminalising certain forms of 'risky' sexual conduct. Addressing gay sex, paid sex, and sex carried out by people living with HIV and Aids, the book demonstrates how public health experts are increasingly arguing that the criminal laws used to regulate these areas of behaviour should be abandoned in order to reduce the stigma and discrimination experienced by the 'risky' sexual populations that they target.

Integrating queer theory with other Foucault-inspired critical interventions, this book builds upon recent conversations between queer theory, feminism and postcolonial studies in order to contend that the use of public health arguments aimed at decriminalising sexual conduct creates new opportunities, but also new challenges, for contemporary sexual movements.

The first major biography on artist Louise Bourgeois brings the life and work of an iconic twentieth-century artist into sharp focus &nbsp; Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) was one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. She is known for a body of work that spans sculpture, painting, and printmaking but eludes any aesthetic classification. Her life and art were so intertwined that it is often difficult to tell them apart. In her own words: “Sculpture is the body. My body is the sculpture.” &nbsp; Marie-Laure Bernadac’s biography of Bourgeois traces the career of a great artist, her training, and her influences, as it tells the story of an exceptional woman’s life. Featuring personal photographs as well as reproductions of her work, this landmark publication is the first major biography to draw on the artist’s unpublished personal archives, including diaries, correspondence, and psychoanalytic writings, as well as the many interviews she gave and the reminiscences of those who knew her. A major reevaluation of a towering figure in twentieth-century art and the relationship of his sculpture to the crisis of nationalism in modern Europe &nbsp; Figures of Crisis examines the neglected decade of artwork that separates the surrealist experiments of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) from his iconic postwar sculptures, revealing the connection between a famous artistic crisis in modern art and the crisis of national identity in modern Europe. In 1935, Giacometti abruptly abandoned his early abstract objects and devoted himself to sculpting portrait busts and minuscule figurines, many no larger than a fingernail. Joanna Fiduccia reimagines this fragmentary and inconspicuous body of work as the pivotal phase in his career, which registered the erosion of interwar democratic values and the searching questions this period posed for the future of modern sculpture. &nbsp; Challenging previous explanations of Giacometti’s return to figuration, Fiduccia argues that his figures gave form to the experience of social breakdown during the rise of fascism through their turbulent surfaces, unsettling generality, dramatic reduction of scale, and compulsive repetition. This fresh account, told through the philosophical, political, and aesthetic thought of Giacometti’s time, shows how ideologies of nationalism generated the problems of selfhood at the heart of modernism.
