Universalism and Regionalism in the Early Islamic World

"In this major contribution to Muslim intellectual history, Andrew Hammond offers a vital reappraisal of the role of Late Ottoman Turkish scholars in shaping modern Islamic thought. Focusing on a poet, a sheikh and his deputy, Hammond re-evaluates the lives and legacies of three key figures who chose exile in Egypt as radical secular forces seized power in republican Turkey: Mehmed Akif, Mustafa Sabri and Zahid Kevseri. Examining a period when these scholars faced the dual challenge of non-conformist trends in Islam and Western science and philosophy, Hammond argues that these men, alongside Said Nursi who remained in Turkey, were the last bearers of the Ottoman Islamic tradition. George Michael hated having his photo taken, which makes this stunning collection of images spanning over 20 years such an unusual and beautiful tribute to one of the most consummate performers the music world has ever seen. Brian Aris first met George when he shot him and his Wham! colleague Andrew Ridgeley in 1984. He gained George's trust and subsequently took some of the most iconic shots of the star that provide an illuminating document of a complex character. With text documenting George's life and Brian's memories of his sessions and meetings with the star, together with iconic images, contact sheets and previously unseen images, this is a beautiful tribute to pop's most likeable and talented singer.

More recently, medieval scholars have developed a framework for considering more specifically medieval ways of thinking about disability, analyzing the medieval conception of the different or 'othered' body and thinking through 'medieval things': such as the responses to injury and resulting impairment in contemporary law, literature, and art; the impaired body as a site for miraculous transformation; the presence of physical and mental difference in different cultural modes than exist in the modern world; and the role of theosophical thought in characterizing difference. This is the first volume to survey this field as a whole, bringing together the most notable scholars in the field alongside up-and-coming academics, to analyse recent studies and to suggest directions for future research. Chapters are organized into four categories that treat broadly the current questions of the field as they apply to each contributor's area of expertise: Articulations of Difference; Critical Perspectives; Traditions of Medieval Thought; and Disability and Material Cultures. Each category is introduced by a leading figure in the field, and the volume is concluded with an Afterword.
