An introduction to dynamical systems theory, a detailed mathematical analysis of pairs of Braitenberg vehicles, and a look at how these results apply to the study of physical and biological organisms. Powering the concept of a Braitenberg vehicle, developed in 1984 by the Italian-Austrian cyberneticist Valentino Braitenberg, is the idea that simple systems can produce complex behaviors. This book covers complex analysis (the study of boundary behaviors of analytic functions) and its applications with engineering problems, especially control theory from the viewpoint of boundary functions. The metascience part is rather unique and illustrates a metascientific way of thinking engineering problems by examples of batteries which are cores of electric vehicles.This book gives a way of looking at the phenomena from a higher and brighter point of view through the windows of boundary behavior and metascience. In Chapter 1 which is meant for mathematics-oriented readers, we state materials in standard complex analysis with emphasis on similarity and Laurent expansions. Non-mathematical readers can also benefit by browsing through many examples and worked-out exercises. Chapter 2 gives some concrete examples of invoking novel ideas in the heap of stereo-typed contributions to a field. Possible replacement of LIB by ECaSS(R) is a typical example through which the reader can learn basics of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. The book also provides hints for a deeper understanding of environmental problems as well as how to manage and create a sustainable society.

From Complex Analysis To Metascience: A Stroll Around Boundary Behavior, Similarity And Duality

As culture looks more and more to science and asks, 'What are we?', one encounters an increasing number of deflationary stories about important phenomena such as meaning, choice, and self. Reality is inherently physical and meaningless, choice is an illusion caused by the brain, and the self is really nothing more than a physical brain process. Although some believe such negativity follows logically from science, this book argues that this reactivity reflects a philosophical commitment to a reductive form of naturalism that emerged during the Enlightenment's 17th-19th century struggle with supernaturally inspired worldviews.As a contemporary alternative, Wild Systems Theory (WST) presents a scientifically inspired philosophy that is consistent with non-reductive forms of naturalism that emerged during this same period. These non-reductive narratives were consistent with cultural beliefs in a meaningful reality, the necessity of choice in personhood, and the non-reducibility of the self to the physical brain. WST revitalizes these views and reconciles scientific and cultural narratives by first asserting that all of reality is inherently interrelated. Meaning, therefore, is this ubiquitous web of interrelations, choice is the means by which we navigate it, and selves are the patterns of interrelations we embody and manage over the course of our lives. Because such meaningful selves emerge step by step out of the trajectory of lived life, they are story-like; that is, they are narratives. And because these narratives always reflect a constellation of choices and chance, they are wild. In short, we are wild narratives.

No sex. No kids. No future? When Tom Feiling moved to Tokyo as a student in the early nineties, Japan was a beacon of the future: a rising superpower, a technology giant, a global symbol of prosperity, civility and success. When he returned twenty-four years later, the country was still a sign of things to come-but, he began to realize, it was no longer a beacon. It was a warning. This is a unique account of contemporary Japan, which travels from the quiet of its furthest flung villages to the aspiration and dynamism of its cities. It tells the story of how, from the mid-seventies onwards, Japanese society unknowingly embarked on a vast, silent process of transformation that is still unfolding today. It is still peaceful; it is still prosperous. But the Japanese population is dwindling at an alarming rate. Shon Faye grew up quietly obsessed with the feeling that love was not for her. Not just romantic love: the secret fear of her own unworthiness penetrated every aspect and corner of her life.
