The New Eden

The New Eden

Life in Human Landscapes - and the search for paradise

Inhalt

This book is about spaces abundant with life: places where nature and humans co-exist, the city.

As countries around the globe suffer with the stark decline of biodiversity, there is another story to be told about the abundance of nature closer to home. JC Niala grew up in the city of Nairobi - the only city with a national park in its border. There she first encountered what life is like when life in the city is deeply intertwined with nature - and what happens when that relationship is threatened.

This book explores the human landscapes that are bursting with life: from the peregrine falcons nesting in New York's skyscrapers, to the wildflowers growing in city allotments. Each encounter attests to the growing realisation that biodiversity is blooming in our cities - and the possibilities that will emerge if we continue to fight for it.

Through a global investigation, anthropologist JC Niala celebrates city life and asks what we are missing by overlooking nature in the everyday, and, by doing so, offers a hopeful vision of the future where nature and human life thrive together.
