The Merovingians in Historiographical Tradition

From the Sixth to the Sixteenth Centuries

The often-forgotten global story of how the Confederacy lost its bid for sovereign nationhood In 1861, proslavery secessionists severed ties with the United States, launched the Confederacy, and readied their new government to join the international community as a sovereign nation. In The First Pariah State, Robert Bonner tells the story of how a transatlantic publicity campaign dashed Confederate hopes by ostracizing its rebellion as an immoral, global menace. The international anti-Confederate campaign built on existing antislavery themes but moved far beyond them. Improvised indictments circulated secessionists’ most incendiary words across the world. The Union and its foreign allies condemned the marauding Southern navy for disrupting high-seas commerce, violating civilized norms, and preparing for the resumption of the African slave trade. Abraham Lincoln and Senator Charles Sumner sought to convert rhetorical barbs and maritime anxieties into novel doctrines of international law designed to counter rogue regimes. And Union opinion-makers, including Black abolitionists, worked with European supporters to stymie the South’s naval expansion, war finances, and diplomatic efforts to gain formal recognition. International worries about the Confederate rebellion waned after U.S. victory, and the Southern pariahdom of the 1860s left few enduring traces in international law or overseas remembrances. In fact, over the next century and a half, the pro-Confederate “Lost Cause” mythology proved to be as powerful abroad as it was within the restored United States.

How the Proslavery Confederacy Menaced the World

The First Pariah State

Based on first-hand accounts, original documentation and unpublished images, this is a highly illustrated history of the Flakpanzer in World War II. As the war progressed, Allied and Soviet forces began to deploy ground-attack aircraft armed with cannons, bombs or rockets to halt German armoured columns. Consequently, field commanders began to demand for their units to be issued with effective armoured anti-aircraft weapons. Renowned armour expert Thomas Anderson explains how the weapons were first mounted on light trucks and then, more effectively, on the chassis of light, medium or heavy half-tracks before orders were issued for a dedicated armoured Flakpanzer - the 2cm Flakpanzer 38(t) based on the chassis of a Czech-built PzKpfw 38(t). The effectiveness of this type saw the development of four further vehicles on the PzKpfw IV chassis: FlakPz IV Wirbelwind (whirlwind), the 3.7cm FlaK 43 L/50 Ostwind (east wind), the 3.7cm FlaK 43 L/60 Möbelwagen (furniture van) and the 2cm Vierlingsflak 38 L/55. The final stages of the war also saw German field engineers mounting Flak weapons on all types of heavy truck or half-track chassis available. Drawing on after-action reports, original wartime documents and rare and previously unseen photographs, this is a comprehensive and fully illustrated study of the German development of Flakpanzers throughout World War II.

The General Strike of 1926: the tragic story of how the world's best organized working class confronted the world's most powerful, and self-confident, government. In May, 1926, nearly three million British workers downed tools to support nearly one million of their countrymen, miners whose employers meant to lengthen their working day and cut their pay. This General Strike brought the country to a grinding halt - which, according to Conservative Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, represented a threat not merely to the nation but to the parliamentary system itself. For nine days, the world's best organized working class confronted the world's most powerful, and self-confident, government. And yet the outcome was never in doubt, for Britain's most important trade-union leaders thought as Baldwin did, although they kept saying they were engaged in a wages dispute only. Really, they feared winning even more than they feared losing. In Nine Days in May, award-winning author and historian Jonathan Schneer mines hitherto untapped archival sources to explain why and how the Strike came about, why and how it was waged and countered, why and how it ended. In addition to government reports and TUC reports, he uses reports of undercover agents and spies, "special" constables sworn in for the duration of the Strike, volunteer strike-breakers, Communist agitators, trade-union leaders and rank-and-file members of trade unions; also, of course, the papers of politicians of all parties. This is a tale of Shakespearian dimensions, replete with tragic heroes and villains and buffoons and opportunists and double-dealers, and contending, evenly matched, forces - both of which meant to do their duty whatever the cost. There may never be another general strike in Britain, but the General Strike of 1926 was one for the ages, illuminating the human condition.

Nine Days in May

From a necessary act of survival to some of the most disturbing crimes in history to its often sensationalized and misunderstood role in certain cultures, cannibalism remains a fascinating yet taboo topic. Cannibalism around the World features more than 100 reference entries that examine cannibalism from a myriad of perspectives.
