In some cases in the US, offenders have been made to take anti-psychotic drugs in order to restore competence to stand trial, or even to receive punishment. If such neurointerventions can change a person's behaviour can they be used to treat and more controversially, predict and prevent crime? Once a fantasy portrayed in films such as Minority Report such questions are fast-becoming fundamental ones for policy, law and ethics. This is the first book to introduce and explain the fundamental concepts, problems and debates around neuroscience, ethics and crime. The notion of a soul - an immaterial bearer of consciousness distinct from the body - enjoyed traditional popularity but recently the idea has been questioned, frequently rejected, and sometimes ridiculed. This book argues that the view that persons are immaterial minds capable of surviving death, is in fact a more defensible view than any of its competitors. Moving beyond traditional disputes between mind-body dualists and idealists to focus on what dualists and idealists agree on in opposition to physicalists, Yandell explores the nature of persons according to, and as they occur within, central religious traditions. He concludes that those Christians who have rejected the soul, and opted for the view that the mind is only the more articulate capacities of the body, have exchanged truth for falsehood.

The second is that aged people may share a spirituality, insights and wisdom regardless of which religious group (if any) formally claims their allegiance. For these reasons, there are important lessons to be learned by viewing ageing through the lens of religion, and vice versa. This book considers the relationship between ageing and religious belonging not just from the perspective of the individual and their carer(s), but from that of the religious community as a whole. This book provides an introduction to the cultural and intellectual exchanges and conflicts between Islam and Christianity since the seventh century. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the rich history of active cultural contact between Islam and Christianity in Europe and the Middle East, despite periods of conflict since the Arab Conquest of Byzantium. The book highlights the positive traditions of cultural and political partnership that resulted in the exchange of vital religious and philosophical ideas and values. Such partnerships not only introduced the Arabs to the great monuments of Greek philosophy, science and medicine, but also ensured the cultural recurrence of Greek culture, culminating in the Latin Renaissance of the fourteenth and fifteenth century.

Negative Theology and Christology: Ascension and Eucharist makes a critical and constructive contribution to systematic theology by exploring the meaningful interpretation of the doctrine of the ascension of Christ. Through an insightful reading of Christ's ascension to heaven as the concealment of the revealer?, the author investigates the extent to which negative theology illumines some of the deepest doctrinal structures of Christian faith. On the basis of close attention to tradition, both catholic and reformed, Norman provides a revisionist history of the doctrine of the ascension that challenges other recent accounts, and offers a corrective to simplistic and reductive interpretations of the place of heaven in Christian worldviews, ancient, medieval, and modern. Norman outlines the significance of the concealment of Christ to Christian life and thought, recovering the ascension as one of the most important mysteries of the faith. Ultimately, the argument contributes to meaningful interpretation of the Eucharist by moving, beyond discussions of presence and absence, towards a personalist account of sacramental encounter with the ascended Christ.

This book is an attempt to provide a philosophical answer to the simple question, "What is the law?" as well as address the various debates this question has spawned. Along the way, it develops a unique position within analytic jurisprudence by carefully distinguishing between a theory of the nature of a legal system and a theory of the nature of legal content (that is, of individual laws). Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology emerged from the intersection of several contesting streams of the Protestant tradition: high theological liberalism, and the 'Luther renaissance' and 'dialectical theology' movements of the early decades of the 20th century.
