The book seeks to move forward debates on postsecularity as conceived by Habermas et.al. which recognise that, contrary to secular expectations, religion persists. The study is unique in exploring the irruptions (external breakthroughs) that unsettle secularisation and which give rise to postsecularisation. This shift has rendered sociology vulnerable to some unexpected theological considerations, some of which are explored in the study. Topics considered in the study, which make it accessible, include: dilemmas of naming; emotions and the visual; martyrdom and theodicy. Each of these has irruptive properties that force sociology to reconsider its theological debts. Postsecularity has become a fashionable term, but one which needs to be fleshed out and this study grasps a moment of opportunity to do so, which renders it original.

It argues that understanding popular culture is key to understanding how Hong Kong identity has evolved, and it discusses the various phases that popular culture has gone through in the post-war period. The book examines how the consumption of popular culture has been related to the changing geopolitical situation, to the politics of economic transformation, and to community building. It shows how behind all these aspects of popular culture lies the essential "in-between-ness" of Hong Kong, neither Eastern/traditional/conservative nor Western/modern/liberal.

With the abrogation of the Zen Buddhist Fuke sect during Japan's modernisation process in the late nineteenth century, the raison d'être for the shakuhachi (Japanese vertical bamboo flute) as a spiritual tool for mendicant monks suddenly vanished. Thereafter, playing the shakuhachi changed from spiritual practice to professional musicianship or musical hobby. The fact that the instrument had been modified and 'improved' has been a well-kept secret. The old style shakuhachi, now named jinashi shakuhachi, became a marginalised instrument for eccentrics. However, during the past decade it has gained popularity, especially outside Japan, where it is considered to be 'the real thing' as opposed to the modernised jinuri shakuhachi. Kiku Day examines how the jinashi shakuhachi, although constructed according to the principles current prior to the Meiji Restoration, itself has been modified to adapt to the needs of modern players. In order to place the instrument into the modern world in its own right, the author, a professional jinashi shakuhachi player, describes her recent collaboration with five international composers on a performance project with the aim of creating a new repertoire. This process of cross cultural creation is described against the background of action research, Theory U, and the theory of flow.

Sex, Gender, and Politics explores how to think about political behavior based on empirical evidence of sex differences in attitudes and behaviors within the context of gendered norms and institutions. Drawing upon advancements in fields such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, and even behavioral genetics, Rebecca J. Hannagan uses a biosocial approach to think about sex, gender, and political behavior.

Increasingly research shows that women and men not only perceive people and situations quite differently, but that we might expect different political attitudes and behaviors from them as a result. Recent studies suggest gender-balanced group dynamics can impact decision making in ways that old models of politics and leadership do not capture. Previous models were based on notions of socialized gender roles, as well as notions about leadership being gendered masculine, but these notions are evolving. From both scholarly and practical standpoints, our thinking about sex, gender, and politics needs an update. Sex, Gender, and Politics explores how to think about political behavior based on empirical evidence of sex differences in attitudes and behaviors within the context of gendered norms and institutions. Although "women in politics" as a subfield of political science and a political agenda is important, this book shows that there are reasons beyond equality and representation to pay attention to sex and gender. Drawing upon advancements in fields such as social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral economics, and even behavioral genetics, Rebecca J. Hannagan uses a biosocial approach to think about sex, gender, and political behavior. The book also addresses the political problem that women do not serve in public office at the same rate as their male counterparts, arguing that the issue is not merely one of concern to women’s rights movements or a matter of equality, but one that leaves political deliberation and democratic politics sorely lacking based on current research on gender balance and group dynamics. This book takes categories typical of any course in political psychology and political behavior—as well as women and politics or gender politics—and reframes them, not only by focusing on sex differences, gender roles, and gendered institutions, but via a biosocial approach to attitudes and behaviors. This reframing is essential for courses on political behavior and gender and politics and presents an updated way of thinking about politics that should appeal to students and scholars alike.

Regina Lawrence¿s new text argues that many films explicitly or implicitly portray aspects of power¿the central concept in the study of politics¿in patterned, predictable, and often problematic ways. By introducing a multi-faceted framework for thinking about the political nature of films, Lawrence explores three ways film can be studied by political scientists and scholars of political communication: the power of film to portray political reality, how films allocate resources, and the nature of film¿s portrayals of power.

Portraying Power follows the recent trend toward using popular culture and entertainment as a vehicle for explaining politics by pushing the line of inquiry into the study of film, the form of entertainment least explored by scholars of political communication. Film studies rooted in film theory and critical cultural approaches have a long and venerable history, but political science has thus far contributed very little to nor drawn much upon it. Regina Lawrence’s new text argues that many films explicitly or implicitly portray aspects of power—the central concept in the study of politics—in patterned, predictable, and often problematic ways. By introducing a multi-faceted framework for thinking about the political nature of films, Lawrence explores three ways film can be studied by political scientists and scholars of political communication: the power of film to portray political reality, how films allocate resources, and the nature of film’s portrayals of power. Covering a typology of film in terms of general form—from documentaries to "based on a true story" narratives to the purely fictional—and their political content—from explicit to implicit—Lawrence analyzes a broad array of films.
