A Global History of the Wars for the Middle East

Dip below the Nile’s surface to the realm of ancient Egypt’s green-faced God of life, death, and rebirth. Known to the Greeks as Osiris, Wesir is one of ancient Egypt’s most enduring deities, worshipped from at least the Old Kingdom, alongside his consort Aset-Isis, until the 6th century CE. Looking to the cycles of nature, the ancients saw Wesir’s mythology made manifest in the landscape of the Nile Valley, reassuring them that just as the crops grow, die, and return, so shall Wesir, and all those who repeat his rituals. Bringing together Egyptological research and contemporary Pagan perspectives, this book invites readers to unearth the ancient mysteries of Wesir and to raise the Djed Pillar of his rebirth in the modern day.

Byzantine medicine and charitable foundations are essential parts of the culture of Constantinople. From the establishment of the new roman capital in 330 till its fall in 1453 the study and practice of medicine was often associated with charitable institutions (such as euageis oikoi) which may have inspired similar foundations in Venice (le Scuole Grandi) whose charitable and sometimes medical aspects are comparable to the byzantine ones. Each contributor addresses these questions and together they allow one to form an idea of how medicine was studied and often practiced in charitable foundations. The study of medicine in all its aspects is a central concern of byzantine culture. Each byzantine citizen was confronted with medicine during his or her life and would have known the charitable foundations, not only for their social function, but also as buildings visible on a daily basis.

This book convincingly argues that the early medieval kingdom of Northumbria existed as a single political entity with a shared culture. Sián Webb makes the case that, while the kingdom itself includes three major cultural regions with distinct identities, by studying the similarities and differences in material and artistic culture it can be demonstrated that these identities managed to exist in tandem and were taken up by communities and groups when necessary and convenient. Webb shines a light on how the individual regions possessed different histories that helped shape how the people and communities expressed the shared Northumbrian identity.

Focusing on the period from 600 CE to 867 CE, Material Culture, Communities and Identity in Early Medieval Northumbria builds upon the developing tradition of research into layered identities and group culture established in various academic disciplines. The purpose here is to consider the different identities and cultural differences that developed in different regions and among different hierarchical communities from those in power to the less influential, though no less interesting or important, individuals whose work both allowed their communities to function and helped drive, adapt and spread new cultural traditions. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the book broadens the view of early medieval Northumbria beyond the high-status settlements and people and, where possible, uses material culture and archaeological sources to include texture of non-elite identities within the kingdom.
