Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax: How do Canada's gateway city-regions position themselves within global value chains? How do they plan and deliver transportation infrastructures that facilitate trade? And why do their strategies raise democratic concerns? Creative Accumulation examines how nations build the capabilities required for sustained technological leadership, moving beyond simple catch-up growth. Drawing on Korea's long-term development experience, Jeong-Dong Lee introduces the concept of the "middle innovation trap", a condition in which countries achieve high levels of implementation capability yet struggle to generate original concepts, architectures, and design leadership. The book argues that original concept design is not the product of individual genius or sudden breakthroughs but the outcome of creative accumulation. Creative accumulation requires posing bold question, persistently accumulating trial-and-error experiences, and scaling up from ideas to viable outcomes. Integrating insights from innovation theory, evolutionary economics, and industrial policy, Jeong-Dong Lee shows how these processes of creative accumulation enable nations to become technology leaders. Although the book draws its evidence from the trajectory of Korean industry and technology, Korea's experience represents a compelling and instructive case of a broader developmental process. Drawing on decades of engagement with government and business, Lee shows that countries which fail to build solid implementation capability tend to fall into the middle income trap. Yet even countries that escape this may encounter the middle innovation trap if they fail to develop concept design capability, resulting in renewed stagnation. International environmental law in the form of multilateral environmental agreements has over the last four decades emerged as the preferred avenue to address inter-state environmental issues that either cross state boundaries, materialize beyond national jurisdictions or are of genuinely global nature such as climate change.This book analyses the possibilities as well as the limitations of environmental treaty making between states. The book considers the structures and processes that lead to the successful adoption of the Paris Agreement – and contrasting them with other attempts that failed in bringing states together under a legally-binding solution. Christina Voigt explores the whole "life-cycle" of multilateral environmental agreements, from diplomatic exchanges, to treaty negotiations, to analyses of the treaty text, non-compliance mechanisms and finally to recourse to courts. Influential scholars from across the world address pressing issues concerning the integration of business and human rights standards for better governance of natural resources. They focus particularly on extractive and multinational companies in the Global South and their role in the transition to net zero societies. The book also examines legal mechanisms for corporate accountability under international, human rights and transnational law, using case studies from selected countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The book reviews proposals for an enforceable legal framework to hold corporations accountable for human rights abuses and environmental damage. Accountability for a Just Transition

Business, Human Rights and Natural Resource Governance

Since the mid-1960s, citizens' rights in the United States have improved across many areas, including race, gender, sexuality, physical disabilities, age, consumption of goods, voting, and more. During this time, there has also been a degradation in economic rights, such as economic inequality. Is there a reason for this contradiction? Is it possible for American citizens to experience rights and equality?


At the center of natural rights theories lies the "inalienable" right to private property, and the concepts and practices of the accumulation of private property always defeat personal liberties. Modern political philosophers who espouse natural rights, including liberal John Rawls and conservative James M. Buchanan, share nearly identical premises and goals. The two sides do not often recognize that the free-standing individual at the center of mainstream theorizing in economics and politics simply does not exist. We are social animals, all embedded in (unequal) networks of social and economic relations, requiring very different explanatory frameworks from those given by individual rights theorizing.


This book explores the ways in which the foundational ideology of individual rights belies the actualities of economic inequality. It argues that "individual rights" philosophy offers the main ideological basis for the astronomical accumulation of wealth that produces this inequality. Investigating the defects of rights theory, the book examines key concepts related to social progress and economic stability. The resulting text presents and analyzes the networks of contemporary corporate, business, and financial power that structurally and systemically limit the lives and choices of citizens in the United States.
