A new paradigm based on quantum probability that can model stock markets and price options—and also upends classical quantitative finance. In The Quantum Stock Market, David Orrell combines theory and new empirical findings to argue for a new approach to finance based on quantum probability. The main finding, a property called q-variance, may be unique in finance in that it was discovered as the result of a prediction, affects financial markets in general, has no tunable parameter, and has important consequences for a range of topics including the pricing of financial options. The property, which somehow eluded detection for over a century, has been verified by experts in the field. And the fact that it is incompatible with classical finance—which is perhaps why it went undetected—suggests that the field must be reinvented. The aim of this book is therefore nothing less than to initiate a paradigm shift in finance. As with any new work that challenges existing methods, the ideas have already received considerable pushback from a range of sources, including leaders in the field of finance, along with physicists skeptical of applying quantum probability outside its traditional domain. Written in an interdisciplinary style that mixes mathematical equations, data analysis, and informed comment on the field of finance, it should be read by anyone—including students, academics, and practitioners—who wants to be on the right side of a paradigm shift.

The edited volume explores the unique positionality of girls as they experience gender-based violence. While girl children are often placed under the umbrella of womanhood, their location at the intersection of femalehood and childhood places them in a unique position with regards to various forms of exploitation and violence. Feminist theories, including feminist legal theory, provide pertinent avenues to explore girls’ positionalities, yet girl children should also be contextualized in relation to their current lived experiences. This book firstly explores the cultural and visual portrayal of girlhood and its relationship with gender-based violence, and secondly provides case studies of specific violations of human rights encompassing sexual violence and exploitation. This is the first comprehensive analysis of Southeast Asian globalization and development since 1870. Interpreting over 150 years of Southeast Asian economic history, Gregg Huff traces the impact of a first period of globalisation from the 1870s to 1929, the effects of Japanese occupation during World War II and its aftermath, and a second wave of globalisation since the late 1960s. He uses vent-for-surplus, dual economy and plural society concepts and argues that the response of those in Southeast Asia to periods of transport revolutions, innovation and opportunity in the world economy translated into rapid export-led growth. Recent swift growth enabled Southeast Asia to start to 'catch up' with the world's leading countries for the first time in its history. Achievements include industrialization, genuine social progress and numerous large urban regions. Nevertheless, the book contends that Southeast Asian development in its 'miracle economies' remains incomplete.

Influential scholars from across the world address pressing issues concerning the integration of business and human rights standards for better governance of natural resources. They focus particularly on extractive and multinational companies in the Global South and their role in the transition to net zero societies. The book also examines legal mechanisms for corporate accountability under international, human rights and transnational law, using case studies from selected countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The book reviews proposals for an enforceable legal framework to hold corporations accountable for human rights abuses and environmental damage.
