Ioannes Mauropous was an influential intellectual active in the eleventh century, a crucial time for the history of the Byzantine Empire and its literature. He was linked to the court of Constantine IX Monomachos and was then metropolitan bishop of Euchaïta. After the battle of Manzikert, he entered the monastery of Prodromos Petra in Constantinople as a monk; there he probably died after 1082. He wrote speeches, poems in prosodic dodecasyllables, epistles and hymns. This book presents the critical edition of Ioannes’ poetic production (106 poems from MS Vat. Gr. 676), replacing the outdated Bollig – De Lagarde (1882). The introduction offers their literary context, a description of the manuscripts, and of the textual transmission. The critical text is complemented by three apparatus (loci paralleli within Mauropous’ corpus; apparatus fontium; critical apparatus) and an Italian translation. The commentary clarifies each poem. Ioannes’ poems are not just for Greek scholars, but a hallmark of medieval poetry. Thanks to introduction, translation and commentary, researchers of medieval literature, historians, and linguists will be able to access this refined poetry.

Tillichs frühe Religionsphilosophie wird insbesondere aufgrund ihrer kulturtheologischen Intentionen geschätzt. Sie zielte indes zugleich auf den Entwurf einer zeitgemäßen Dogmatik. Im dogmatischen Zusammenhang modifiziert Tillich nun aber seinen Religionsbegriff, indem er ihm eine Theorie religionsaffiner Strukturen konkreter menschlicher Existenz unterlegt. Das Resultat ist die bedeutende Konzeption einer "anthropologischen Religionsphilosophie", die noch das späte Hauptwerk mit seiner Korrelation von anthropologischen Fragen und theologischen Antworten prägt. Nach einer Darstellung der Grundkoordinaten von Tillichs Religionsdenken nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zeichnet Martin Fritz im Lichte der zeitgenössischen Lebens- und Existenzphilosophie die Weichenstellungen der Marburger Prolegomena-Vorlesung (1925) nach, wo erstmals die berühmte Wendung von "dem, was uns unbedingt angeht" als religionstheoretische Schlüsselformel auf den Plan tritt. Tillichs neues Programm wird daraufhin in verschiedenen Ausbaustufen der späten deutschen und frühen amerikanischen Zeit rekonstruiert. Damit gewährt die Arbeit nicht nur wichtige Einblicke in eine bislang vernachlässigte Phase der Tillich'schen Werkbiographie, sondern stellt zugleich eine Gestalt religionsphilosophischer Theoriebildung vor, die sich wiederzuentdecken lohnt.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology emerged from the intersection of several contesting streams of the Protestant tradition: high theological liberalism, and the 'Luther renaissance' and 'dialectical theology' movements of the early decades of the 20th century. It is marked by consistent and intense engagement with the Bible read as Christian Scripture and so centred upon Jesus Christ. Matthew Puffer examines the historical crises out of which Bonhoeffer composed the manuscripts that would become his posthumously published magnum opus, Ethics. He explores the ways in which Bonhoeffer understood his work as a response not only to the ecclesial, social, and political crises of Nazi Germany, but more specifically to a "crisis in ethics," the failure of traditional forms of ethics to effectively respond to the state of emergency. Bonhoeffer famously wrestles with novel proposals for how Christians should think about responsibility, complicity, culpability, and guilt in ways that have left not only casual readers but also philosophers and Bonhoeffer scholars scratching their heads.
