Reflections on the Subject of Economic Statistics

By thinking differently about audit, this exciting book establishes that the conceptual core of audit itself is the art of thinking differently: the making of those new connections that inspire the creativity and confidence to challenge established thinking and provide actionable insight. Audit is reconceptualised as a vital, creative, engine of progress - in society, the economy, the environment and in the appropriate use of technology. Progress requires confidence in the future. Audit addresses whether an audited entity is deserving of confidence and capable of developing - with deserved confidence flowing from creativity, sustainability, resilience and fair treatment. Audit becomes a form of social conscience, responding to, evaluating and influencing the ideas and ideals that a society or an entity within a society holds dear. Through such framing, audit no longer observes from the sidelines but drives progress in business and society more generally. Whilst audit's traditional notions of conformity, control and compliance can be readily captured by a machine, the insight, imagination and inspiration that comes from thinking differently is fundamentally human. In this respect, the future of audit and of humanity converge. This book is not just for auditors and accountants concerned about the future of their profession but is an invitation to all with an interest in the future well-being of business and society to reformulate how they view audit.

Audit and the Art of Thinking Differently

Capitalism has resulted in stupendous growth and prosperity in the Western world, underlining its importance as an engine for creation and innovation. Communism arose to counter capitalism's ills as a method of wealth distribution, as manifested through the increasing gap between the rich and poor even in the most prosperous nations. Yet no country is either truly capitalist or communist, and the simplistic polarization of the world into two camps ignores the vital importance of systems that promote both innovation and equitable distribution. This book offers an insightful discussion on the ills that capitalism and communism have meant to address, and the pitfalls of the two approaches, most importantly with regards to the misconceptions of "profit," the misfit child of economics and accounting. Analysis is also extended to consider behavioral theories from a needs perspective, including marginal theory and behavior based on fear. Finally, the concept of the new, "middle way" of entrepreneurism is advocated, in which the voices of all stakeholders (including the environment and the earth itself) are considered in any endeavor, thereby addressing the iniquities in distribution, while emphasizing the creative and innovative needs of all individuals.

A silent revolution is underway in India today. Starting in 2020, twelve states have rolled out unconditional cash transfers to nearly 118 million women. While the media disparages these transfers as 'freebies', Wages for Housework: India's Experiment with Unconditional Cash Transfers to Women offers the first book-length study of these transfers, using social reproduction feminism, particularly the wages for housework campaign, to theorize unconditional cash transfers as providing economic recognition of women's unpaid domestic and care work. Against the backdrop of a low female labour force participation rate, a residual welfare regime, and an entrenched culture of gendered familialism wherein women are presumed responsible for care, the book addresses arguments for and against unconditional cash transfers in feminist economics and welfare theory. In doing so, it recollects the vision of the founding mothers of the Indian Constitution who advocated for the recognition of women's unpaid work. It traces how Indian courts have, since Independence, treated women's unpaid domestic and care work as being on par with an occupation to hold that the economic recognition of unpaid work is a step towards the constitutional vision of equality and dignity. Through an in-depth study of unconditional cash transfers in three states, namely, Goa, Assam, and West Bengal (implemented in 2013, 2020, and 2021, respectively), Kotiswaran elaborates on state-specific welfare regimes and analyses the implementation of cash transfers through interviews with bureaucrats, academics, feminist activists, and women beneficiaries to understand if and how they have resulted in women's empowerment, whether in terms of education, paid employment, or the gendered division of labour. In conclusion, the work posits that unconditional cash transfers represent an unprecedented and welcome expansion of the Indian welfare regime and to be truly gender transformative, they need to be embedded in a broader feminist agenda for care.
