Since colonial times, the developing world has served as a ‘resource hinterland’ for the global capitalist system. In recent years, this relationship has again returned to centre stage. Across the globe, a broad range of natural resources are being drawn into market-led modes of environmental governance. Pressures on natural resources in the developing world have become especially acute as escalating mineral and energy demands from the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), and the continuing US quest for non-Islamic oil and strategic minerals have made Third World resources increasingly significant in global markets. Such a geopolitical shift in global resource interests would suggest that there is an urgent need to reconsider the impacts of ‘neo-colonial’ transnational practices in the context of natural resource-extraction industries. As local issues become linked to global political and economic forces, a ‘second scramble’ for natural resources in Africa, Asia and Latin America, initiated by powerful transnational corporations (TNCs) and other actors, threatens to undermine country policies for sustainable resource extraction, and sustainable development more broadly.This timely text will introduce readers to the key issues surrounding reform and expansion of the extractive industries in developing countries, highlighting the consequences of recent developments in the sector to development in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Material will draw on a variety of case studies from across the developing world, focusing on both large-scale and small-scale resource extraction. Why unfettered free-market capitalism endangers democracy—and what to do about it. In Private Power and Democracy’s Decline, Mordecai Kurz explores the relationship between free-market capitalism and democracy. He shows that technology has made capitalism different from what was envisioned in the Age of Enlightenment. Technology creates centers of market power and monopoly concentration that result in a society in which some people are enriched immensely while many workers’ livelihoods are often destroyed. Contrary to conventional thinking, technological competition does not remove market power, which becomes a permanent fixture of free-market capitalism. Such private power creates political inequality and generates forces that cause democracy’s decline and possible destruction. Applying these ideas to the US, Kurz shows that today’s problems begin in the 1980s with the policy of unregulated free-market capitalism. Coupled with the information technology revolution, this created a techno-winner-takes-all economy—leading to a second Gilded Age of unsustainable inequality and extreme political polarization. In the last 50 years, the economy “boomed” for some while leaving the majority of America’s workers behind. Kurz concludes that only regulated capitalism can support democracy so that the benefits of technology are more equally shared and no person’s livelihood is destroyed to enable others to be enriched. To save democracy, he proposes a “restoration-of-livelihood” policy, offering firms managerial flexibility to maintain rising productivity while ensuring that technology does not destroy the livelihood of others.

The law codes in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region are a well-crafted blend of civil and Islamic law in which civil law principles do not violate Islamic provisions. Yet, common law principles derived either from English common law or Islamic customary usages remain unidentified and thus ignored. Here, this complex scenario is rectified through a comparative analysis of the primary data (e.g. cases, statutes and arbitral award decisions), adding common law and uncodified Islamic custom to MENA law codes. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to allow common legal principles found in civil, common and Islamic law to be distilled in order to create a new, harmonised international commercial arbitration law code (HICALC) or uniform Arab arbitration law (UAAL) for adoption in the MENA region, where these principles already greatly influence the legal systems and can be readily assimilated into a harmonised or uniform code. The work demonstrates that this new code would lead to improved arbitral award enforcement in the MENA.

Burnout market feminism combines Han Byung-Chul's concept of the Burnout Society and feminist Li Xiaojiang's market feminism theory. To unravel the puzzle of how women in China have thrived in business despite state crackdowns on feminism, Ling Tang argues that it is important to examine the role of the market in postsocialist China and the evolving interplay between illiberal politics and a neoliberal economy. Drawing on multisited ethnography conducted primarily in Shenzhen and Hefei during the Xi era, the author looks at the multiplicity and nuance of the lived experiences of businesswomen and their negotiations with patriarchy across different sociocultural contexts, particularly their confrontations with hetero-patriarchal intimacy norms and male-dominated guanxi business practices. Strategic lessons for monetary policy from the last two tumultuous decades based on insights from Sun Tzu, the Chinese philosopher and author of The Art of War. When central banks were forced to innovate and develop a multifaceted set of new weapons in response to the 2008 global financial crisis and 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the result was a substantial expansion in their authority and reach. In The Art of Monetary Policy, Kristin Forbes draws lessons for monetary policy of the last two decades from the principles of Sun Tzu, the author of The Art of War, a Chinese philosopher and military strategist from the fifth century BC. Tzu proposed several key principles for success—tenets that apply to monetary policy and the battlefield today: (1) plan in advance for the next battle; (2) accept and adapt to the inevitability of powerful, external shocks outside your control; (3) establish a strong tactical position; (4) develop a variety of weapons that can be combined for different maneuvers and situations; (5) maintain flexibility so that you can quickly modify your strategy; and (6) consider the longer-term costs when evaluating the trade-offs of different approaches. These principles provide insights into what central banks did (and did not) do well over the last two decades, as well as how they should deploy interest rates, balance sheets, emergency support programs, forward guidance, and macroprudential tools in the future. While the optimal strategy in both war and monetary policy is more of an “art” than a science, adopting these principles can improve our ability to battle the next crisis and build more resilient economies during peaceful periods.
