Psychoanalytic Perspectives on the Israel-Gaza Conflict

Routledge Studies in North American Politics

Speaking to wider debates of U.S. foreign policy and grand strategy, its interests and motivations in International Relations and International Political Economy, and processes of regionalism with regard to political-economic integration. NAFTA-land Security present a clear, important and original argument to all those struggling with how best to understand the overall policy aims that drive U.S. thinking, and how they relate to global trends and developments in U.S. foreign policy.

North America is increasingly an integrated economic hub, and Canada and Mexico are important to the U.S. (and vice versa) in terms of energy security, trade, cross-border production, and more. This has made regional security and stability more strategically important than the already high level it had attained through geography. In order to understand North America’s growing strategic significance, we need to take a closer look at U.S. policy within the region. In this book, Paul Ashby examines how U.S. now considers North America, defined regionally as the countries within the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), as a distinct and strategically important economic and security space. Through closer examination of several policy programs with both Canada and Mexico, Ashby demonstrates how the U.S. is actively constructing a regional, North American security architecture based around, but also operating within NAFTA’s perimeters. He contends that increased regional economic integration and important interdependencies spurred by NAFTA are driving, and that these were given far greater impetus by the events and regional impacts of 9/11. North America’s growing strategic importance to the U.S. has encouraged it to take regional security more seriously. Speaking to wider debates of U.S. foreign policy and grand strategy, its interests and motivations in International Relations and International Political Economy, and processes of regionalism with regard to political-economic integration. Ethics and Social Licence in the Blue Economy squarely confronts the vexing and urgent ethical challenges related to the economic and development potential of the seas. A work of applied moral philosophy, incorporating interdisciplinary elements in law, governance and social science, it provides a multifaceted philosophical interrogation of social licence, explaining its complex relationship to concepts like legitimacy, social contract and legal licence. From this basis, it interrogates the ethics of the Blue Economy, exploring the key moral principles at stake and how they play out in the unique context of marine industries, ocean ecologies and coastal communities.This book delves deeply into how the world's oceans are increasingly seen as an untapped resource, with great promises of commercial development delivering profound goods to humanity. Yet this economic growth raises serious ethical questions. It partitions off resources that are currently open for all, threatens precious ecosystems and impacts wildlife. The aspirational idea of the 'Blue Economy' aims to capture the ocean's economic development potential but also the need for that development to be done sustainably, equitably and legitimately. This need for legitimacy highlights the growing ethical importance of community acceptance and the 'social licence to operate'. This shows that lobbying is problematic when institutions are diverted from acting in the public interest. It reveals why diversions happen, how they are linked together, and what can be done to prevent them. The reader can use the 'Diversion Guide' to identify any problem about lobbying, and test when an officeholder has been diverted from acting in the public interest. The book examines how lobbying can encourage citizen participation and lead to informed law and policy, but is not always fair. It considers the way in which wealthy and influential people can gain greater access to the United Kingdom's political system than most to shape the laws that govern everyone. Scandals are often reported in the media surrounding unequal access, corruption, the revolving door, and more. Unchecked, such lobbying corrodes trust in public institutions. It is vital that the problems surrounding lobbying are clearly understood to avoid a system of weak regulations and to ensure that better regulations are created to restore public trust in politics.
