This book focuses on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, using nationally representative datasets from the China Rural Household Panel Survey and China Labor-force Dynamics Survey to reveal the temporal and spatial evolution of cropland abandonment in rural China, and systematically examines the underlying drivers and governance strategies of farmers' cropland abandonment.
More specifically, this book creatively uses "People-Land-Money-Rights" as an analytical clue, and comprehensively employs modern econometric methods such as panel Tobit model, staggered DID model, and panel fixed-effect model to empirically investigate the impact of off-farm employment, land fragmentation, agricultural comparative return, and tenure insecurity on farmers' cropland abandonment. Based on these, this book also further explores the role of new agricultural business entities, farmland water conservancy projects, agricultural subsidy reform, and land tenure reform in curbing cropland abandonment. This book highlights the urgent need to address cropland abandonment and provides valuable insights into land protection in the context of food security and sustainable agriculture.

This book builds on the scholarship by contributing a critical analysis of the shortfalls of LGBTQ+ laws in Africa and the areas of progress and possible paths forward. It outlines the state of LGBTQ+ rights across Africa and discusses the notion of queering African law. It explores regional approaches towards the protection of LGBTQ+ rights within Africa and the important role of activism in challenging anti LGBTQ+ laws notably through litigation, their successes, challenges and limitations. It discusses the tensions between cultural, historical and other factors that on one hand challenge progress but which on the other hand may also be avenues for advancing rights. In line with the argument of queer theory as relevant in Africa, the chapters draw on queer legal theory which allows for critical analysis that aims to advance “a reformation of legal discourse” on LGBTQ+ rights. This focus is timely given the introduction of harsher anti-homosexuality laws in some African countries. Through multdisciplinary contributions, it offers readers a nuanced analysis of the challenges towards truly queering African law and the possibilities for doing so.&nbsp;Adam D. Dubin
 is Assistant Professor of Law at Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Spain, where he teaches subjects related to human rights, SOGI comparative law, development and Sub Saharan Africa.

 is a doctoral candidate in the department of Sociology/African Studies at the Graduate School of Social Sciences, University of Basel, Switzerland. Her publications and research focus on homosexual rights and attitudes towards homosexuality among Africans.

José Rente Nascimento is a Brazilian scholar who specializes in forestry, agriculture, and environmental economics. He has supported development and conservation projects throughout Latin America while working for international institutions, governments, and NGOs. A former senior natural resource specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank, Nascimento is a forester and holds an MP and a PhD from the University of Minnesota.

This book explores the complexities surrounding the right of association from a legal and philosophical perspective. This is an open access book that focuses on issues around rivers which feed more than one country at a time, changing their course and flow. It emphasizes the need for more efficient and transparent risk-informed water governance across South Asia with a special focus on river basins in the region. Researchers and practitioners critically examine one or more themes such as—economy, society and culture in transboundary resource sharing: conflict and cooperation, nature of challenges, everyday dynamics and formal and informal responses; contemporary water governance framework in South Asia (reflecting on the issues of justice and rights of riparian communities); transboundary disaster governance and policies that relate to resource management; water governance networks and alliances in South Asia; political economy of communities depended on transboundary rivers; risk-informed planning and governance for transboundary resources management (implications for at-risk populations—like women, youth and children, fisherfolk, indigenous communities); policies and engagement at national level between South Asian countries on risk-informed governance. 

The book acknowledges that policies in South Asia need to deepen their agenda towards just and equitable sharing of water resources across the riparian regions, with an inclusive and people-centred approach of decision-making. For this purpose, it brings forth an understanding of the perspectives of different stakeholders for bridging gaps and facilitating a constructive dialogue for the betterment of the marginalized and vulnerable water-dependent groups. The book is a rich resource for researchers as well as NGOs and policy makers working on issues of water governance, disaster governance, trans-boundary issues, community resilience and so on.
