 Persil, Ata, Pril, Somat, Pritt ? viele Marken, die zum Unternehmenskosmos von Henkel gehören, sind seit Jahrzehnten fester Bestandteil des Alltagslebens. Nur wenigen jedoch dürfte die vielschichtige und wandlungsreiche Geschichte bekannt sein, die sich hinter dem Namen Henkel verbirgt. Joachim Scholtyseck zeichnet den Weg dieses zunächst für Deutschland und heute weltweit bedeutsamen Unternehmens seit 1876 erstmals umfassend auf wissenschaftlicher Grundlage nach und zeigt, wie sich Henkel vom Waschmittelhersteller zum Weltkonzern wandelte, der heute insbesondere im Bereich Klebstoffe weltweit führend ist. 
 
 Henkel ist ein Kind des frühen Kaiserreichs und profitierte vom wirtschaftlichen Aufstieg des jungen deutschen Nationalstaats. Der steigende Lebensstandard der Bevölkerung erhöhte die Nachfrage nach Konsumgütern des täglichen Bedarfs, die das Unternehmen mit seinem schnell wachsenden Waschmittelgeschäft bedienen konnte. 1876 von Fritz Henkel in Aachen gegründet, expandierte das Unternehmen rasch und verlegte seinen Hauptstandort 1878 nach Düsseldorf, wo sich noch heute der Hauptsitz befindet. 1907 kam das revolutionäre Waschmittel Persil auf den Markt, das auf innovative Weise beworben wurde und für das Unternehmen einen Quantensprung bedeutete. Bis heute dürfte es die bekannteste Marke sein, mit der Henkel weithin verbunden wird. Doch das war schon Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts eine Verkürzung des vielseitigen Unternehmens. Joachim Scholtyseck fragt nach den Erfolgsfaktoren, die aus dem Aachener Start-up eine florierende Firma machten, arbeitet die Rolle der Firma im Dritten Reich auf und zeigt, wie aus dem Waschmittelproduzenten ein Weltunternehmen wurde.

This book presents a groundbreaking new perspective on European imperialism in Africa, by focusing on the role of Dutch private entrepreneurs in colonial activities during the so-called ‘Scramble for Africa’.Distinguishing between a state-based ‘Partition of’ and an actor-based ‘Scramble for’ Africa, the book illustrates this process by tracking the entrepreneurial strategy of a group of Dutch entrepreneurs in the Scramble, at a time when the Dutch state itself largely withdrew from the African continent. This book thus investigates why&nbsp;and how nineteenth-century Dutch entrepreneurs from the port city of Rotterdam invested significant resources in West and West Central Africa between the 1830s and the 1910s. It demonstrates the trans-national nature of colonial investments in the Scramble for Africa, highlighting the crucial role Dutch entrepreneurs played in trade, production and investment in empires across West and West Central Africa (the Congo Free State, French Congo and Portuguese Angola). The book aims to rethink the Dutch role in European imperialism more broadly and its repercussions in the present day.
The book takes into account the social and political implications of colonial entrepreneurship as much as the economic and business implications, going beyond a strictly entrepreneurial analysis of success and failure. It will be essential reading for scholars of economic and business history, as well as historians of imperialism, colonialism and trans-imperial relations.
Gijs Dreijer&nbsp;is a postdoctoral researcher presently working on a grant from the Gerda Henkel Foundation on Dutch entrepreneurs in nineteenth-century Africa. Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Leiden University, The Netherlands, and the Alfred. D. Chandler jr. International Visiting Fellow at Harvard Business School. His PhD dissertation on sixteenth-century maritime law in Antwerp was awarded the Frank Broeze Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis in Maritime History. His research interests focus on economic, business, maritime and imperial history.

Dutch Entrepreneurs in the Scramble for Africa, 1830s-1910s

Private Entrepreneurship and European Imperialism

The Seven Years' War, the Battle of Plassey won against the Nawab of Bengal, the acquisition of the Bengal Diwani Rights and the Act of Regulating set the stage for the Second British Empire in Asia between 1756 and 1773. These events and the growing settlements had brought an ever-increasing number of soldiers to Bengal and the other factories of India. The French had largely lost the geopolitical game in Asia, but remained numerous in Pondichéry and even in Bengal (Chandannagar).The cultural history of these major shifts in global power deserves more attention: an increase in the number of European libraries abroad is not surprising for either nation. But the British case is special: a very different form of high culture society was now established in Calcutta, with the first common law court of record ever established outside Britain, the Supreme Court. A long tradition and recent scholarship have largely clarified our ideas about how political-economic leaders like Warren Hastings and major scholars like William Jones supported and influenced the study of Persian and Sanskrit manuscripts and indigenous legal traditions at this moment. But the book also shows that at the same time, as Europe's population grew, a more standardized form of libraries and a Western reading culture emerged. With the arrival of more soldiers and company servants, a Western world canon began to form. This differed from the period up to 1750 in the Mediterranean and India, studied in the first volume&nbsp;Western Libraries and Reading, where a multiplicity of small libraries, individual in size and selection, prevailed. One of the first massive manifestations of this Western canon, with a particularly Franco-British character, can be traced in the serial documentation of post-mortem household inventories. The results of a first detailed analysis of the bestsellers of the late eighteenth century among Europeans in India until 1800 are surprising: A "world literature" in the ambiguous Goethean sense becomes visible, and almost no European medieval author survives (until nineteenth-century Romanticism). In today's world, a "Western canon" is usually criticized, debated, and decentered, and with good reason, but as a historical process, the impact of such an imported canon cannot be ignored. No one denies the strong dynamics of autonomous forms of print and reading culture now emerging simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, and many other languages, sometimes hybridizing with British production. To some extent, however, it must also be acknowledged that British Bengal early on provided an immense space for this Western canon abroad, comparable ultimately only to the American East Coast.

This book breaks new ground by exploring regional scenes beyond London during the years 1965 to 1975.&nbsp; Whilst many accounts of this era have tended to focus on the Capital, John Griffiths journeys beyond its boundaries to assess how far the cultures usually implied to be exclusive to the metropolis in fact diffused into the English counties. The book examines both the ‘swinging period’ of post-1945 history (c. 1965-1967) and the years of the counter-culture c. 1968-1975,&nbsp; examining topics such as the rise of the boutique, alternative cinema, art festivals and art labs, and regional funding for the experimental, before moving on to consider the attitudes of regional newspapers to changes in society. In its latter sections the legacy of 1968 is considered, with specific focus on the rise of Women’s Liberation and Gay Liberation movements. It concludes with an examination of student life on the regional campus.&nbsp; This book argues that, contrary to many accounts that branded them as cultural deserts, the 1960s saw the ‘provinces’ rebranded as ‘regions’ and were increasingly up to speed with London culture.John Griffiths is Senior Lecturer on the History Programme at Massey University, New Zealand. He is the author of several articles that have appeared in internationally recognised journals such as Social History, Journal of Social History, Urban History and Contemporary British History.
