The Power of Luxury, Louis XIV to Donald Trump

This biography follows the remarkable life of Louise-Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun, whose portraits of European royalty and nobility hang in many of the world's most important galleries. As a young woman in the male-dominated society of late 18th century France, she was denied an artistic education and forced to nurture her passion outside the restrictions of conventional schooling. Vigee Le Brun's vibrant art, in addition to her charm and beauty, caught the attention of Queen Marie-Antoinette, who honored her as her chosen painter. At the pinnacle of her fame and fortune, however, the Revolution forced Vigee Le Brun to flee Old Regime France, leaving everything behind except her only child. 
 Drawn from her memoirs, archival research, and reexamination of the judgment of her contemporaries, this book portrays a single working mother who survived because of her cachet, charisma, and artistic talent. Cast on a storm-tossed continent, solely reliant on her palette, Vigee Le Brun produced some of her major works during her twelve-year exile, returning to France to continue her work after Napoleon had restored stability. Her story is one of triumph, adversity, perseverance, and ultimately peace.

Seit einigen Jahren erlebt die alte Tugend Demut eine neue Blüte. Zeitgenössische Aneignungen und Fortschreibungen der Demut zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass der Demut dunklere und kompliziertere Seiten eher ausgespart werden. Dies ist grundsätzlich nachvollziehbar, gleichzeitig jedoch auch bedauerlich: Denn gerade die Verwicklungen und Paradoxien, ja die Abgründe der Demut haben das Nachdenken über diese prekäre Tugend immer wieder stark inspiriert. Am Beispiel des Motivs der hochmütigen Demut spürt das Buch Aushandlungen der ungefälligen, verwickelten, aber gerade darin äußerst vielsagenden und erhellenden Seiten der Demut nach.

In 1679, the commentator Joachim von Sandrart described Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) as a painter who had perfected the art of the miniature and of flower painting, a high and deserved honour. Posthumously, however, it is Merian's status as an entomologist or naturalist that has garnered the most attention; she has not received her due as an artist. This book remedies this situation and assists the reader in understanding Merian's life as a woman and as an artist in the early modern Dutch Republic. Using Merian's hundreds of extant watercolours and book illustrations as sources, in combination with her surviving correspondence and with contemporary art treatises, Catherine Powell-Warren recognizes the artistic contributions of Maria Sibylla Merian, and situates them in their socio-cultural and creative context. This book is the first to consider Merian's art and art-historical significance: her artistic range; her techniques; the rich visual rhetoric she deployed in her works; and her innovations. Merian may not have been a guild member, but she was for all intents and purposes the head of a for-profit business (a 'master'), seeing to the training of her daughters and managing a successful workshop, publishing her works, and networking to secure patrons and resources. Considering the impediments she faced as a woman, her achievements as an artist, as well as in other realms, can be considered noteworthy and perhaps even extraordinary.

At the beginning of this period, France's painting industry was still underdeveloped compared to those in Holland, Flanders, or Italy; by the end, it was on its way to European dominance.
